  • "The property itself is fabulous, it's such a great size and the decor is lovely."

The location is so peaceful with only a very rare motorbike sound going across the coast road, and the beach is a 15 min slow paced walk away (and sea views from the garden!) The gardens are well kept but also have 'wild' areas to allow nature to flourish. The living room is so cosy, I read a fair few reviews complaining about the seating - but personally I really liked the seats and found them super comfortable. However there is not enough room for 4 people, the '2 seater' is much more of a 1 and a half or a snug kind of sofa. The master bedroom is beautiful and has a perfect view of the sea, and gets a gorgeous natural sunlight in the mornings. The second bedroom isn't great, both mattresses need replacing urgently. We had to use the duvet off the spare bed as a mattress topper otherwise it was unusable. Which is really disappointing. The kitchen is fully fitted and includes both washing machine and dishwasher which was perfect for us. Good selection of cutlery, and didn't need anything extra whilst we were there. There is no welcome pack on arrival though, which we have had at most other cottages - so make sure you bring a few tea bags and milk if you're wanting a brew as soon as you get in! The property binder was slightly outdated and had some conflicting information - so this could definitely be updated. We did love the bird report though! Very useful for birdwatchers! The property definitely needs some maintenance and TLC in areas, such as the roof and the windows/doors. There's quite alot of visible gaps which the creepy crawlies loved - there were alot of spiders! The gardens are not enclosed but they are easily identifiable as to who's are who's. If you're travelling with a dog who's a bit of an escape artist this is not the place to come. The property has 3 doors so it's very easy for them to get out. Our dog is a 'velcro dog' and never strays anymore than a few metres from your side - but she did go for a wander to the car park looking for me when I drove to the shops and left her with my mum. So this is definitely something to keep in mind before booking. I'd recommend this place to anyone - however if you do have reduced mobility its probably not the best place to stay. It's quite a steep incline to get from the car to the cottage and when bringing bags up it would definitely be a challenge, especially if it's rainy as the bricked path got quite slippery.

  • "The cottage was clean comfortable and had everything needed for our stay."

The gardens were lovely - a mix of wild and formal with lots of bees, birds and butterflies. The kids found lots of places to hide for hide and seek games and there's plenty lawn for ball games. The view is incredible and we loved eating dinner outside and sitting watching the sunset. The location is a perfect base to explore west Dorset. A short walk away is a pub and cafe which was great for the evenings we didnt feel like cooking. The beach is a short walk away but you aren't advised to swim there due to the currents. There are other beaches a short drive away however where you can swim. There's no WiFi which is no bad thing as it really does force you to switch off. But as phone reception is patchy you may need to go for a walk or short drive if you need to book any activities etc / check opening times etc for your time away. Or be better organised then we were and pre book before you get there! We loved our stay there and would definitely recommend it.

  • "The Fossil and Cross is in a stunning setting and the gardens are fabulous."

There are lots of things to explore nearby. For children the garden is an adventure and there are plenty of places to sit and relax outside. The cottage is comfortable and well resourced. The only downside for us was our rescue Beagle enjoyed exploring the gardens too and we lost her on a couple of occasions, which meant we could not relax unless she was on a lead. This was completely our problem (the owners made it clear in the description that the garden was not enclosed) but this information might be helpful to others with dogs such as ours. Everything else was perfect.

The cottage is rustic and the grounds are stunning. Beds could do with firm mattresses. I often wonder if the owners of holiday cottages actually try a night on the mattresses provided. Survivable for a weekend. While we appreciate everyone is cutting back! Little things like hand soap, a new frying pan, (brought my own with us, soap & bin bags) These things make a huge difference. Small finishing touches go a long way! Basics like washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, dish cloth & tea towel were provided. The bathroom fan, if you are in the little room, the noise is horrendous! Do not switch on if popping to the bathroom at night, use the torch on phone! The light above bathroom mirror doesn't work! You can only put the shower on via the pull cord. The bathroom door needs a good wipe around edges. Kindling for the fire. Apparently most people bring own. The owner did bring us some. We have never had to bring kindling!! Rat poison plastic catcher by washing line. Beware if you have a dog! Bees nest at the front. That perhaps needs to be moved. Especially if you have small people or dogs The welcome folder good do with an update as well. The instructions to getting here need an update. (Only our view) Please note while it seems negative. It is worth the stay and was wonderful to be in touch with nature. Having no WiFi was a real a bonus. Make sure you book a meal at the Club House down the road. Worth the visit.

Cottage well equipped, I agree with previous comment about the sofa and chairs could have done with something with a higher back as no support for neck. Mattress will need replacing soon as sinking in the middle. We had a lovely stay and really appreciated the flowers and biscuits. If you are fortunate you will see pheasants and deer in the garden. One final point for the owner I’m guessing the tv has been recently replaced unfortunately the dvd player is no longer connected as it does not have a hdmi lead. • "This is the second time we've visited this cottage and since my previous visit, I wondered if its under new management or cleaning company looking after the property as it looks and feels a bit neglected this visit."

The cleaning before we arrived consisted of a wipe over but they forgot to wipe the extractor hood. The cups, plates and other kitchen equipment hadn't been checked and were all dirty and needed washing before we could use anything. The garden is overgrown with brambles poking onto the narrow pathway which was painful, the property roof eaves are hanging off / missing in places and the washing line is rendered useless with the hedge growing through it. The beautiful communal BBQ area was and still is half finished and now looks a bit derelict. It is NOT suitable for 4 adults, we were very cramped, the new seating in the living area is so uncomfortable compared to our previous visit and fits 3 adults max, the 4th person will have to be happy sitting on the floor. On our last visit we saw the lovely owner every day pottering around the garden with the gardeners and assistants, there is no one around caring for the gardens this time which makes me think it's under new ownership and we won't be returning to this cottage again sadly.

The view from the living area and the patch of garden that looks over this view hadn't been cut so our kids could not play there as they had previously. Real shame as we all enjoyed sitting and having late night picnics there on previous visits.

We are dedicated to improving habitats for wildlife and to enhance biodiversity as routine mowing removes habitats and vastly reduces biodiversity. Only shorter plants survive, which has a knock-on effect on the biodiversity of organisms such as pollinators and herbivores. Less frequent mowing will enable bees, butterflies and other such wildlife to take up residence in our gardens. We mow paths and selected patches of grass however given your helpful feedback we may extend the areas mowed outside Fossil and the Cross. Property Owner

The cottage was a perfect haven for our holiday with our dog Luna feeling very welcome too. The garden was large, perfect and very private, although not secure but not a problem for us. For two of us, the cottage was a perfect size and equipped well. Our only suggestion would be to have a three seater sofa where the two seater is. There's space and would make a more comfortable living space especially for four people. We also found the pillows a bit soft and didn't sleep great because of this but that's personal preference. • "Stunning location with great views ideally situated in centre of Dorset coast to visit all that it has to offer."

Firstly the good bits - great location, stunning views from the cottage and its garden down the Jurassic Coast to Golden Cap and Lyme Regis, totally pin drop quiet, pretty garden, cosy and warm with wood burner and supply of wood, loads of walks from the door, comfortable bed, pleasant owner who lives close by and a 40 min drive takes you to nearly all of Dorset’s coastal attractions and into east Devon. Now the negatives - The main one is that it is a minute walk up a steep path from the car park area to the cottage and with four or five trips on arrival and departure it was quite exhausting (and we are relatively fit people in our mid 50’s). Secondly the cottage doesn’t have an enclosed garden area and is one of three cottages sharing an admittedly stunning communal garden and whilst the garden we had was private from the others and obviously ours, our dog had to be put on lead even just to go out for a wee in the mornings in case she wandered off. A small closed off area would be fab. Whilst the cottage has most of what you need and is comfortable don’t expect luxury as it is fairly basic with lots of stuff needing upgrading replacing especially the very small under worktop fridge freezer which is smaller than in our caravan, and dated microwave. The plates cups pots pans etc all a bit mis match showing signs of age, the curtains of the French door don’t fully close so we had to pin them together and there was no curtain or blinds at all in kitchen window or door which is disconcerting bearing in mind the garden is not enclosed and can be accessed by anyone. The main seating is comfortable enough for two but would be a squeeze for four especially if they all were adults and the telly is as small as they come. The heating was a wood burner and portable electric oil radiators (one still with two wheels missing) which were sufficient even in February but on arrival there was no kindling, firelighters or matches and the supplied lighter and newspapers did not get the fire going on the first night but we were not cold. A little more attention to detail and this cottage would be truly magnificent. It has no Wi-Fi so we brought our own plug WI-FI router and it worked ok. In summary Great central location, Stunning grounds, views and gorgeous sunsets - on a warm day we think you would struggle to pull yourself away from the sun drenched garden with its views and could spend all week enjoying it. The cottage could be so much more with small changes but we grew to love it during our week in February, were sad to leave and would return again.

This converted stone-built gem is a marvellous holiday home in West Bexington for those looking for a relaxing seaside break and the opportunity of exploring this popular part of the Jurassic Coast.

The setting is wonderful, with designed gardens surrounding a complex of three holiday cottages – The Fossil and The Cross, Whispering Pines and Mimosa Cottage, all of which are well spaced with their own private garden areas in which to relax or play. The Fossil and The Cross Cottage, with its two comfortable bedrooms and sociable living area with kitchen, sitting and dining area, is perfect for a small family or couple's break.

From the lounge, in sunny weather you can open the patio doors and enjoy the patio area with table and chairs.

In chilly weather snuggle up in the lounge, add some wood to the log burner and enjoy in a warming hot chocolate whilst reading a book or watching the TV. The Fossil and The Cross is charming and full of character.

You can relax off the beaten track to the sounds of birds rather than hearing traffic; in fact, the cottage is accessed via a private road and located in a peaceful and tranquil setting. Pull on some wellingtons for a walk and with a short hop and skip across two fields you will find yourself directly on a stretch of the world-famous Chesil Beach.

This stretch of beach is frequented by fishermen and you will often see them sitting under their multi coloured little tents, it's also a haven for walkers and sun worshippers alike.

A little tea room is within walking distance following the path across the field, ideal for some refreshments after an invigorating walk or just head home to your comfortable little cottage sheltered from the elements; kick off your wellies and warm your feet up by the log burner.

Hop in the car and just a few minutes away you will find beautiful West Bay cliffs with beaches stretching to both sides.

Going further along to the east is the tallest point on the South coast – Golden cap offering views to the isle of Portland to one side and Devon to the other.

Lyme Regis and Charmouth are not too far away if you fancy fossil hunting, or enjoying some seaside fish and chips. Come and enjoy time away from your busy life at The Fossil and The Cross and have a relaxing Jurassic coast stay.
