  • "We recently had a lovely 4 day break."

Cottage and grounds were great, fantastic view from main bedroom window, and a very central location, plus the weather was very good for this time of year, so a extra bonus. A couple of minor issues, the shower is not that great, but the owners are aware of this and are going to try and make it a bit more powerful and the double bed mattress is very soft and also could do with a king size quilt. We will definitely come back

  • "Another lovely stay at Fossil & The Cross."

Delightful, well equipped cottage with amazing views & large grounds - perfect for us & our dog! The owners couldn’t be more helpful & are a very friendly couple. The only slight niggle is the shower which is very poor but we made do with the bath so no real problem. We certainly hope to return next year.

  • "It was excellent and we had a wonderful time."

We enjoyed lovely views from the Fossil & Cross and it was fairly private in a lightly wooded/garden area. Our hosts were very friendly and we hope to return next year. 10 out of 10 :-) Mike Johnson

  • "This cottage has brilliant views and is comfortable enough but needs updating."

It feels very "tired", the shower needs replacing with a power and a heated towel rail, the central heating was not working so no where to dry towels. Curtains and lounge furniture need replacing. Bath towels very small and next size up needed. Uphill walk from parking to cottage which could be an issue for elderly. The cleaning was OK but dogs hairs on carpet before our dog made it worse! Also chocolate in the log basket and sweet wraps found. That said it is a nice quiet cottage with lovely views. Thanks for the flowers and shortbreads...very nice.

  • "The Fossil and The Cross Cottage provides excellent views and is ideal for a nice quiet family holiday."

However, it is in need of some TLC, and modernization when it comes to some of the furniture. We had curtains and door knobs that were falling off, something that had been mentioned in previous reviews and obviously had not been fixed in the meantime. The lounge furniture needs to be updated, it is very old and uncomfortable and there is a desperate need for a power shower in the bathroom. The water trickles out and makes it very difficult and time consuming to have a shower, especially trying to wash your hair.

The site was too quiet especially in the night but marvelous in the day. Few minutes walked to chesil beach for fishing and caught big seabass, bream and flounders. Loved it.

Beautiful gardens excellent location but the cottage needed a bit of tlc needs a new kettle full of lime scale all the door handles hanging off shower full of lime scale could do with new head cracked window you think because the cottage have been empty for so long the owner would have spent a couple of pounds on it to make it look a bit better inside and when we got there a little welcome pack like a pint of milk and some tea and coffee would be nice

  • "The location of the cottage is great set in its extensive gardens with lovely views across fields to Golden Cap in the west."

The efficient log burning stove kept it cosy in this year's indifferent May weather. Good facilities for recycling. Wifi would have been nice but the EE mobile signal was enough for calls, emails and social media. Hope to stay again in the future.

  • "Cottage was really basic and smaller than expected."

Shower water pressure was weak, almost no mobile signal which is why WiFi is needed but isn't there, not the most secure doors, overall not value for the money we paid but I suppose that will be the case everywhere this year. On the plus side the hosts were quite accommodative and lovely to have a chat with, as they were around a lot doing up the gardens. The location is fantastic, very peaceful and central to many Dorset beauties.

  • "Another fantastic trip to this cottage, and we won’t hesitate to rebook to next year!"

The cottage itself is everything you could wish for in a relaxing weekend away, always extremely clean, well equipped and comfortable - a real home from home. The cottage is in an idyllic location, with wonderful views from every window and the grounds are fantastic - our dog loves to explore them. The owners really care for your comfort and stay, and despite having to move this booking throughout lockdowns and illnesses this year, nothing was too much trouble for them and we are so grateful we could get back here. I would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

  • "The cottage exceeded our expectations."

Spotlessly clean & well equipped. Very comfortable to settle down in the evenings. The view across the bay from the lounge french window & main bedroom is spectacular, especially the sunsets. Brilliant grounds & gardens which were perfect for our dog & although it was November we managed to have a coffee on our private patio. Lovely area for walking & sightseeing & we will hopefully be back to Fossil & The Cross next year

Twin bedroom a bit small but cozy enough. Henry very helpful and considerate. The Fossil and Cross is a little way from the car parking space but there are trolleys there to help. The place does not have Wyfi which we thought good. All in all a lovely place and we would come again.Thanks.

  • "Nice clean cottage with everything you need for a short break, which we enjoyed with our two dogs."

If a part of the large garden could be fenced off then it would have been better for us as dogs had to be on leads the whole time. Great location to explore west Dorset and really cosy pub in the village.

  • "There was a problem at the cottage we had originally booked but we were offered an upgrade of another cottage at the same location for no extra cost."

It was an excellent alternative. The owner also called us that evening to make sure that everything was ok, which it was. The view out to sea was amazing and the cottage was extremely comfortable. We had a fantastic stay.

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback.. We are glad to hear that you had a great holiday and the second cottage was fantastic. We look forward to you staying with us again in the future. Property Owner

The property

This lovely cottage is surrounded by a large garden and affords great coastal views between the mature trees and landscape.

This converted stone-built gem is a marvellous holiday home in West Bexington for those looking for a relaxing seaside break and the opportunity of exploring this popular part of the Jurassic Coast.

The setting is wonderful, with designed gardens surrounding a complex of three holiday cottages – The Fossil and The Cross, Whispering Pines and Mimosa Cottage, all of which are well spaced with their own private garden areas in which to relax or play. The Fossil and The Cross Cottage, with its two comfortable bedrooms and sociable living area with kitchen, sitting and dining area, is perfect for a small family or couple's break.

From the lounge, in sunny weather you can open the patio doors and enjoy the patio area with table and chairs.

In chilly weather snuggle up in the lounge, add some wood to the log burner and enjoy in a warming hot chocolate whilst reading a book or watching the TV. The Fossil and The Cross is charming and full of character.

You can relax off the beaten track to the sounds of birds rather than hearing traffic; in fact, the cottage is accessed via a private road and located in a peaceful and tranquil setting. Pull on some wellingtons for a walk and with a short hop and skip across two fields you will find yourself directly on a stretch of the world-famous Chesil Beach.

This stretch of beach is frequented by fishermen and you will often see them sitting under their multi coloured little tents, it's also a haven for walkers and sun worshippers alike.

A little tea room is within walking distance following the path across the field, ideal for some refreshments after an invigorating walk or just head home to your comfortable little cottage sheltered from the elements; kick off your wellies and warm your feet up by the log burner.

Hop in the car and just a few minutes away you will find beautiful West Bay cliffs with beaches stretching to both sides.

Going further along to the east is the tallest point on the South coast – Golden cap offering views to the isle of Portland to one side and Devon to the other.

Lyme Regis and Charmouth are not too far away if you fancy fossil hunting, or enjoying some seaside fish and chips. Come and enjoy time away from your busy life at The Fossil and The Cross and have a relaxing Jurassic coast stay.
