The house was fantastic, and so was the location. We felt right at home immediately, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The only thing we found a pity and hadn't realized enough was that the house is quite far away from everything. You have to drive 5 km down the dead-end road the house is located on before you reach the house. This means you always lose a lot of extra travel time or have to walk the same short stretch over and over again. Also, there were no walking paths or mountain bike routes in the immediate vicinity. You always have to drive 15 to 20 minutes by car, and the same applies to the supermarket. Dogs were welcome, but we missed having an enclosed garden area. Now, our dogs aren't roamers or sheep hunters when we're not around, so that wasn't a huge problem, but the pasture where the sheep graze was open, and the dogs could walk right over there from our house; it was just a few dozen meters away. So, if you are traveling with a dog that needs an enclosed garden, it is good to keep that in mind.

"Very comfortable and warm cottage in good location for walking."
The owner's rep was very helpful and friendly. Suggested improvements would be to have a teapot, casserole dish with lid and to have decent sized chest of drawers in all bedrooms, particularly the ensuite.

"Our time over the Christmas was amazing with outstanding views, walks etc."
The cottage itself was so homely and beautiful, thankfully the rooms downstairs were well equipped as the stairs to the other 2 rooms were left to the younger ones

"Very large cottage, very clean and comfy beds,, extremely quiet."
i would have liked a wardrobe and a hand rail going down the steps to the front of the property due to my age and disability, also it was a shared garden with the cottage next door. lovely relaxing stay but the only downfall for us was it was almost an hour from the supermarket and the beach but would highly recommend.

"Few hiccups on arrival with lack of equipment, broken items and maintenance."
Issues sorted by super friendly housekeeping/maintenance chap on owners instruction, despite not hearing at all from Sykes when letting them know the problems. Lovely spacious property, just could have done with some tlc to begin with. Lovely week on the whole. Great location especially if you like peace and quiet and scenery/walking.

"A property with negatives and positives."
Negatives; no brush and pan, no vacuum cleaner. Chipped crockery. Lack of glasses and mugs. No information/instruction folder. Greasy pans. Directions to cottage could do with improving. Postives, nice comfy beds. Lovely bathrooms, smart TV, clean and comfy furniture. Nice outdoor area. Lovely location.

"Great setting overlooking glorious scenery."
Spacious and clean, although the bed and sofa were very uncomfortable. Would recommend
-
"Lovely location & the cottage was excellent, secluded & relaxing."
Couple of points- no hoover no mop/bucket to keep cottage spotless. This would be a plus! Bins/refuge/recycling- confusing. Should we use the bin near estate farm workers office? Bins near the road some distance away. That said we loved this beautiful place!

"Second time staying."
Place has everything we needed. Staff were super friendly and remembered us from our previous stay. Would highly recommend.

Where you’ll be staying
MONIAIVE
Thornhill 9 miles; Dumfries 17 miles.
Moniaive means ‘Hill of Streams’ in Gaelic, and the village itself occupies a wonderful location at the meeting of the three glens of Craigdarroch, Dalwhat and Castlefairn. Although planned by a local landowner in the 17th century, Moniaive has a history dating back to the 10th century, and the medieval street layout is still evident. The village has been dubbed ‘One of the coolest in Scotland’ by The Times, and today it is a bustling, thriving centre with a range of facilities including a fabulous Italian restaurant. There are many events throughout the year including the Moniaive Gala and festivals for beer, bluegrass and folk music. In the hills surrounding the village are the Striding Arches, a series of Andy Goldsworthy sculptures set in the landscape. Visiting these also offers some delightful walking in the spectacular scenery. This is a wonderful village for a holiday in Scotland.
