  • "Claymoddie was the perfect getaway for us—a true haven of comfort and charm."

From the moment we arrived, the warmth of the Aga welcomed us, making the kitchen feel instantly homely and inviting. It was a joy to cook with, though the house also offers a conventional oven and hob for convenience. This beautiful family home is spacious and thoughtfully equipped. Every room feels welcoming, and the layout is ideal for relaxing or gathering together. The surrounding walks are simply superb, with easy access to the Whithorn Way and the mystical St Ninian’s Cave—perfect for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. The gardens are a standout feature: mature, lush, and brimming with character. From towering trees and spectacular hydrangeas to a pond with a burn gently flowing through, the outdoor space is a sanctuary in itself. We were lucky enough to spot deer visiting and enjoyed watching a delightful variety of birds at the feeder just outside the kitchen window. Claymoddie is more than just a place to stay—it’s a place to unwind, reconnect, and soak in the beauty of the Scottish countryside. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a comfortable, peaceful and homely escape.

  • "Just back from a week at Claymoddie, what a wonderful time we had."

The house was beautiful, well equipped (especially the kitchen) with top quality furnishings. The whole house had such a warmth and homely feel to it, it was like house sitting rather than a rental, we didn’t want to leave! We were made to feel very welcome by the owner and had a truly relaxing week. The gardens… what can be said about the gardens… a complete delight and like having our own private parkland to walk about in, with woodlands walks to boot! Our 2 dachshunds were in heaven, off lead walks and such beautiful surroundings to explore. We will definitely be planning on coming back.

  • "A large and spacious house in a perfect setting, which suited our family of 5 plus dog very well."

We particularly enjoyed the extensive garden with its varied and interesting planting. Although at the end of the season, we made good use of the lovely outdoor pool (requiring a separate arrangement with the owners). Great walks nearby. The house would benefit from a set of instructions with information on wi-fi etc. However, the owner called-in on the second day to make sure that we had everything that we needed.

ISLE OF WHITHORN

Whithorn 4 miles; Garlieston 7 miles, Wigtown 14 miles; Newton Stewart 22 miles.

Referred to locally as 'The Isle', the Isle of Whithorn is designated an outstanding conservation area. The graceful crescent of shore and neat houses that make up the harbour presents a perfect spectacle in any camera’s viewfinder. Already in existence 1600 years ago, the community was at the very beginning of Scotland’s Christian history when Ninian, Scotland’s first missionary and saint, founded his church at Whithorn. The Isle Church itself, a former Free Kirk, stands prominent in defiance of the highest of tides. The Isle harbour, once the host of cargoes of coal, fertiliser and timber is now busy throughout the year with local boats fishing for crabs and lobsters, as well as catches of scallops brought in by the visiting Manx fleet. However, some of the best goes straight in through the doors of the award-winning Steam Packet Inn on the waterfront! Take a walk along the Harbour and enquire about local sea-angling opportunities. At the end of the Harbour, follow the signs for St Ninian’s Chapel and shortly you’ll come to the Witness Cairn. Just a short distance away stands the 14th century ruin of St Ninian’s Chapel, once a place where pilgrims were welcomed and now in the care of Historic Scotland. It’s an easy climb up the Cairn to the distinctive white tower which has been a mariner’s landmark for close on two centuries. At the top you can behold the majestic expanse of the Solway and the Irish Sea. Across the water lie the great peaks of Cumbria’s Lake District, while due south lies the Isle of Man, its nearest point just 18 miles away. The Isle is a welcoming port for visiting leisure sailors and bowlers too. So please bring your boat and your bowls! At the Isle you will discover a tranquil place that is much more than just a view. Welcome to the Isle!

Property can only accommodate a minimum stay of 3 nights.
