"Thank you so much for a truly wonderful time at 3 Malthouse Cottages."

We (5 adults, 2 children, 2 dogs) all greatly enjoyed our stay. The cottage itself is utterly charming and clean, with a fab spacious bathroom, a brilliantly stocked kitchen, lovely comfortable bedrooms and cosy places to sit and dine. We loved the big garden and outdoor seating area especially. The host was more than helpful, providing a travel cot and numerous lovely ideas for things to do in the local area. We could happily have stayed a lot longer, and thoroughly recommend this cottage. The village was picturesque and charming. Would definitely come again!

"Our extended stay at 3 Malthouse Cottages was absolutely perfect."

The cottage is thoughtfully furnished and equipped so you have everything that you need, presented beautifully, really clean, and in a very quiet spot. The view out of the front is gorgeous. The cottage itself is walking distance to Chawton House, Jane Austen’s house, a nice pub and cafe and a playground. There are also great walks/runs and bike rides from the door. Chawton is well placed so you can explore Hampshire more widely. The hosts are so kind and helpful; We have had the nicest stay here and would absolutely return.

It’s decorated and furnished beautifully and has everything you need to feel at home. The beds are really comfortable, great shower and a good amount of storage. Garden is gorgeous! The cottage is really quiet, and has wonderful views across the fields in Chawton which, we have discovered, is the loveliest place to spend time. The hosts are incredibly kind and helpful. We had an amazing time and will definitely come back.

"We had a lovely family stay."

It was very cosy and comfortable ! The cottage is very warm and the two fires make for a fab addition to the cosy atmosphere. I recommend to come and just stay in ! With the two amazing museums in the village you don’t need to travel anywhere ! Just enjoy the village. However the area is amazing and you can explore the local villages , the vintage train line or even to see the Arundel castle which is only one hour drive. I would love to return to see the village covered in roses in summer

"The cottage is wonderfully located and very comfortable."

With off road parking and a generous garden that is totally dog friendly the cottage is a superb place from which to explore Chawton and its surroundings. Just an hour from Heathrow Chawton is the perfect spot for trips to Winchester, The New Forest and Goodwood and, of course, Jane Austen country. Georgie and Tim are delightful hosts for whom nothing was too much trouble and their attention to detail shines through in the way the cottage is presented. All in all a delightful property to be highly recommended.

3 Malthouse Cottages is a beautiful property in Chawton, Hampshire.

Chawton is one of the prettiest and most unspoilt villages in Hampshire and is set within the northern borders of the South Downs National Park.

It is the chocolate box village where Jane Austen lived and worked, completing and publishing all six of her celebrated novels, including Pride and Prejudice.

The property itself is a Grade II Listed period cottage of great charm situated in the heart of historic Chawton and was originally part of a malthouse, later adapted into cottages by Edward Knight of the Knight family.

The cottage is full of character with fireplaces and brick floors, leaded light windows, latch doors, original timber floorboards, and beautiful period beams.

The accommodation has a comfortable and homely feel and is tastefully decorated.

It features a dining room and sitting room, both with attractive brick fireplaces.

Upstairs, there are three double bedrooms (two with double beds and one with a single that can be extended to a double), along with a bathroom that includes a roll top bath.

The garden is a lovely aspect of the property, with a pergola and seating area positioned at the rear, and the cottage has beautiful views over the rolling Chawton countryside.

An optional annex is available at an additional cost, offering space for two guests and featuring a freestanding bath, please enquire if you’d like to include the annex in your stay.

Malthouse Cottage was once home to William Goodchild, a local thatcher, and his wife Mary, who worked as a servant for Frank and Mary Austen – Jane Austen’s brother and niece.

The village is home to Jane Austen's House and Museum – a Grade I listed building with a charming garden – as well as to Chawton House (where Jane's brother lived), now a heritage site open to visitors, all within walking distance of the cottage, as is the local pub and café.

The village also has a welcoming community with a church, 'The Greyfriars' pub, and a café.

Nearby attractions include Gilbert White’s Museum and the woodland trails of Alice Holt Forest.

The surrounding countryside provides ample opportunity for a number of country pursuits, as well as visiting Winchester and the beautiful market town of Alresford.

The hosts live nearby in Chawton Rectory, a property rich in Austen connections and formerly owned by Reverend Papillon, who was once considered a potential suitor for Jane.

Guests with an interest in local history are welcome to visit the hosts for a coffee and conversation about Chawton’s literary heritage.

Whether you're marking a literary milestone or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Malthouse Cottage offers a timeless escape in one of Hampshire’s most picturesque and historically rich villages.
