The rustic cabin has all the basic amenities we required and was perfectly placed for walking in the New Forest. It was in a very peaceful place and there was always plenty of activity to watch at the bird feeders in the garden and some of the birds we hadn't seen before. There was a very nice pub five minutes walk away. Thank you Steve and Judy.

Firstly we found it difficult to find , having one sign that says Birch cottage was not helpful. We found the small two sofa uncomfortable , it rained a lot during our stay and a comfortable sofa would have made a difference. The double bed was basic and needs an upgrade.

  • "We booked to stay for a week in April 2023."

We were assured by Sykes that issues raised in a Feb.2023 review had been fixed i.e.the broken freezer compartment door and leaky shower. Neither of these had been addressed and there are reviews mentioning the freezer door as far back as April 2019! Rustic shouln't mean neglected. There were cobwebs on the blinds and snail trails on the beams, black mould under the cistern and some of the food in the welcome pack was nearly a month out of date. We lasted for two nights and the shower still leaked despite raising this with the owners while we were there. There is no fence between the owner's cottage and the front of Endymion. On the morning we left there was a large pile of dog poo outside Endymion. The setting is idyllic, watching the birds was lovely but the prices are extortionate

  • "A wonderful forest cabin retreat."

Loved living an uncluttered life for a week as guests of the forest inhabitants - the horses, deer, birds and other wildlife that make the New Forest such a bewitching place. The cabin was comfortable and the welcome pack generously provided everything we needed for breakfast on our first morning. Thanks so much for the abundant supply of peanuts and seed for the garden feeders that the birds steadily demolished over the week. Fantastic to see a woodpecker hanging upside down on a feeder just a few feet from the cabin window.

  • "First the positives : the location is great, with fabulous walks on the doorstep."

Also, The Higher Corner pub is close by. The not so good : 'Rustic' is fine, but rustic shouldn't mean shabby and tired. The owners have clearly become complacent over the years. Yes, there are many positive reviews but there are also some critical ones, which align with our own experience. A few specific things which have already been mentioned on earlier reviews but not addressed: - the freezer door comes off in your hand - the toilet is still difficult to flush - the shower cubicle still leaks In our opinion, the price in February should be the maximum for any time of year, as long as the property is in its current condition. Summer rates are quite exorbitant!

  • "If staying in this quirky cabin, be prepared to live within the elements, birds at the window, plenty of light, but in a basic structure."

The kitchen suits a couple who would probably prefer to eat out, the shower room was a little chilly, but if you prepare for a rustic experience, its also very magical. Owners lived opposite with dogs who do visit the guests, gorgeous dogs, but did put some hackles up at our end! The log burner was a godsend and plenty of logs and matches supplied - a lovely way to spend the evening. Overall, a bit more rustic than expected, but I would recommend for walkers and those who enjoy being in the depths of the New Forest. Lovely welcome touches with milk and wine and a warm cabin on arrival.

Endymion is clean, comfy & cosy & there were some lovely touches by the owner, wine, flowers, cereal, tea, coffee & fresh eggs which were very much appreciated & kept us going until we could get to a shop. The little private garden was lovely & many birds of all kids visited daily throughout the day. The lodge could do with some TLC in places & brightening up inside though. The owners live next door - they and their dogs are very welcoming and on hand if needed. We enjoyed relaxing in the small enclosed garden watching the wonderful variety of birds that came to feast upon the bird feeders and sitting inside in the evening, warmed by the log burning fire. We had welcome gifts of fresh produce and wine - greatly appreciated - plus ample dog towels and poo bags if needed. The chalet has everything required in order to prepare meals but there are also many pubs dotted about in the area to enjoy too. It is certainly a fantastic place to get away from it all - literally, as there is no phone signal here!! There are plentiful walks right on the doorstep if you want a break from driving. Be sure though to have a sturdy car as the mile or so gravel road leading to the chalet can be a bit punishing! Having said that, it is worth the effort to be away from the towns and traffic and to see the deer and ponies (and cattle!) that roam freely across the beautiful landscape, not to mention the clearly visible stars of the night sky. In all, a great place to escape and relax.

Floor board missing in bedroom. Green mould on ceiling beams in lounge. Neighbours dogs always barking. Grease and dust covered kitchen equipment. Broken fridge ice box door. Flat battery in torch. ..…... We can't begin to say how awful this holiday was, the accommodation as stated certainly didn't come up to the standard we would have expected for the amount of money we paid. We accept this was a basic chalet, however it was worse than a B&Q shed. I suspect a shed would have been much cleaner. This place hasn't had any work/money spent on it since 2011 by the looks of it. We know it was dog friendly, but we would expect it to be clean rather than smelling of wet dog. The sofa was stained but covered by a throw which was a dog blanket, the rug needed to be moved so you could open the sofa bed which again was falling apart. Once the rug was moved we had to hoover up as the floor was all dirty where the rug had been. The kitchen was a hazard. The microwave was situated under the sink, the freezer door came off in your hand, We could go on and on. Hence we left after the first night still in the same clothes as we arrived in. We know others had commented about issues and there are also good reviews, although the good reviews are somewhat dated so I guess the property wasn't as derelict then!! From our experience we would never recommend Sykes to anybody.

  • "Beautiful location, we enjoyed different walks every day and loved the area, and how dog-friendly it all is."

Previous occupants (mostly) had written glowing reports. But there needs to be some care and attention to the accommodation in our view. It’s small, but that’s fine, that’s what we wanted, but it’s not mega-cheap - £633 at Easter - so expectations are quite high. We ended up leaving early. The rats: we saw the devices to keep rodents out but they weren’t entirely successful. Scrabblings in the walls which drove us and the dog mad at night, and rat poo in the bathroom. The shower: doesn’t work, the shower head moves about, soaking the bathroom and not the person in the shower. Needs two people to get one person clean, which can be fun, but not necessary! The kitchen tap: we couldn’t stop it dripping and it’s so close to the bedroom it was very annoying at night. We ended up putting a washing up sponge under it but it wasn’t great. The kitchen: we cook rather than eating out. The kitchen was tiny as expected, no problem. If only the fridge door and the cooker door opened the other way out it would have been perfect for us, but the way it is it needed contortionism beyond my skills. The freezer compartment door kept falling off also. We didn’t write anything negative in the Visitors’ Book, as it was so gorgeous a place, but it needs a bit of sorting.

The nearby pub, The High corner Inn is an easy walk (<5 minutes) and it's 100% dog friendly serving great quality food. Endymion is a great base to work from with easy immediate access to the nearby forest and heathlands/moors. We stayed for 5 days in June and the weather was a mixture of bright hot sunny days and others which were overcast so we were able to pick our activities accordingly. We walked our dogs three times a day and kept returning to Endymion for rests and a cheeky cider on the patio in the secluded garden which itself was packed with wildlife including squirrels, Woodpeckers and a host of different bird species. We were visited daily by wild ponies grazing on the grass verges and open areas. The hosts Steve and Judy were very affable and gave great tips and advice on the local area, points of interest and places further afield. Everyone we met was very friendly and we are already in the process of booking another visit which seems to be the recurrent theme of everyone who placed an entry in the visitors book. I would recommend this venue to anyone wanting a secluded break in the countryside.
