  • "Great location for the village."

Wasn’t enough hooks to hang coats etc nowhere to put muddy boots . Shed to front but full of paint etc. shower temperature would not alter. Bring your own condiments . It’s a lovely cottage just not as many nice finishing touches as some of the other places we have stayed in

  • "A couple of rolls of toilet paper and salt and pepper would be appreciated."

The bathroom window has mould and a sticker saying please don’t open, this was the same 8 years ago when we last stayed, couldn’t it be fixed. The skirtings behind the bedside tables were filthy. When we arrived furniture was pushed in to a corner. No accommodation specific instructions I.E. what to do with ash from the fire. Oven instructions. Bin on the road being used by others for dog poo and leaves, perhaps should be kept on the higher level.

Loved its position in the crags and trees. It felt like being in a tree house. Saw red squirrels which was a highlight. So close to village centre but secluded. Many walks from door. Very rarely used the car. Agree with other feedback that the bathroom really needs decorating. However very comfy beds and excellently equipped kitchen and everything else really top knotch. Especially appreciated the welcome pack.

It also needs a folder with instructions about how everything works- yes you can figure it out but the lack of such basic information creates a negative first impression.

  • "Acorn Cottage in Grasmere presents a bit of a conundrum!"

It's evident that the owners spared no expense in renovating and refurbishing the property to a high standard several years ago, with top-of-the-range white goods in the kitchen and quality furnishings throughout. However, time has taken its toll, and the cottage now appears quite worn, with an urgent need for a full redecoration and soft furnishing replacements in several rooms to restore it to its former glory. In addition to requiring a complete redecoration, it needs a thorough spring clean to refresh its appearance. The paintwork, windows and doors are all quite grimy and necessitate attention beyond the customary cleaning after guest departures. If we had our grandchildren with us, we would not have felt comfortable placing them in the stained and unclean highchair. Additionally, the property's eco credentials are less than ideal, as all windows are single-glazed, and prone to being cold and draughty. At the outset of our stay, we discovered that the TV aerial cable was damaged, resulting in no TV reception. We contacted Lakelovers in the morning, and their maintenance personnel promptly replaced the cable within a couple of hours - full credit to them for their efficient response. In the meantime, as the WIFI signal was good, we were able to stream Netflix, iPlayer, etc to our devices. Despite its shortcomings, we found the location of the property to be ideal as it was just a short walk from the charming centre of Grasmere. We enjoyed our brief stay there and appreciated the convenience of having a car parking space suitable for our estate car and being in such proximity to the cafes, bars, and restaurants made our short stay even more enjoyable.

It is cosy and warm and mostly clean and well equipped, and has very comfortable beds. However, 2 of the 3 ceiling lights in the lounge weren’t working, so it was very dim at night. We couldn’t find any new bulbs in the cupboards. The table mats on the dining table are rather shabby. All the windows were dirty. The external downspout from the bathroom, which is next to the kitchen window, is broken, so it splashes the window as water pours down. We couldn’t find a way of contacting the owner or Sykes, to inform them and get these things fixed.

  • "Book this cottage!"

We nearly didn’t book because of the mixed reviews, but please don’t let these put you off. Acorn cottage is quaint and beautiful, you can’t beat the location - 30 seconds walk in to Grassmere, and plenty of walks for all abilities from the door. You’re only a short drive away from other areas of the lakes for day trips - Ambleside, Keswick. Parking is really no problem - we have a Honda Civic which fit with plenty of room. Outside there are two sets of garden furniture. The garden isn’t secure so stick the dog on a long line. Inside the cottage is sparkling clean and comes with a lovely welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk sachets and biscuits. There’s also a little cleaning pack with bin bags, washing tablets and dish cloth. The kitchen is well equipped with absolutely everything you will need, the living room is lovely and cosy (especially with a roaring fire!) and the beds are very comfy. Heavy curtains perfect for winter and easy to use central heating. The shower is nice and hot after a long day in the fells. It would be a squeeze for 4 people but as a couple or family with children it’s perfect. We didn’t use the Wi-Fi so can’t comment on that, but hopefully you’re thinking of staying there as a holiday and not to work! Get out and enjoy the Lakes. We had a Saturday to Wednesday stay and absolutely loved it, we did so much and we could have done more. TIPS / NEED TO KNOW - Yes, the stairs up to the cottage are steep and not suitable for those who struggle with mobility - Bring a towel to lay on the floor for dirty shoes, there’s a shoe cupboard but limited room - You will need: logs, more toilet roll, washing up liquid, salt and pepper, cooking oil, milk - Tweedies is the best for food and drinks

  • "The property was superb, centrally located and extremely well equipped."

The only downside was the lack of WI-FI for the full duration of our stay. The property is advertised as being equipped with WI-FI but a check of prior reviews also noted “issues” so it was clearly still an on going concern and a heads up prior to our arrival would have been good so we could have been better prepared. However the first we knew of the problem was a hand written note left by LakeLovers advising that they hoped the problem would be rectified that day (Saturday 27th August) but that was not the case. There was no further communication from LakeLovers until we chased on Tuesday 30th following the Bank Holiday. We were told someone needed to visit the property to “complete set up” and we waited in for some on the morning of Thursday 1st Sept however, no one turned up. We spoke to LakeLovers again and they, again, confirmed that they needed to attend the property so we waited in again on Friday afternoon for someone to come. This time someone did attend but was unable to rectify the issue. It was still unresolved upon our departure. We specifically booked the property based on the need for internet connectivity as I had work commitments during the week so it did make life somewhat difficult and impacted upon our stay based on our having to wait in for someone to attend the property. As noted prior warning from LakeLovers before our arrival would have given us the opportunity to prepare and to rearrange work commitments and we were also disappointed at the lack of proactivity from LakeLovers regarding what is clearly a long standing issue. LakeLovers also advised that a full case review would be conducted and we would be contacted in due course to discuss further, at this current time we are still awaiting contact and the feedback promised.

Meantime I’m on the phone almost every day, listening to people fob me off, racking up data charges with poor signal anyway, having to go to cafes for wifi to do work. If the owners read this, they should realise they’re paying for a shoddy and unfit for purpose service that still hasn’t resolved the issue for the next guests.

The property

Perched on a rocky ledge, slightly removed from the village centre, Acorn Cottage is a timber-built property with a magical feel.

The views are just lovely, and the surrounding woodland makes the perfect backdrop for a fairy tale cottage. The house is approached by stone steps leading to the front door.

Stepping inside guests will be thrilled with their choice of hideaway with its traditional features, wood beams, stable door and feature stone fireplace.

The décor is stylish and tasteful, and the furnishings inviting and comfortable.

A deep-cushioned sofa and generous armchairs are clustered around the wood burning stove, while a pretty glass panelled door hints at the beauty outside.

There is plenty of space for boots and coats in the under stairs area, which in turn takes guests to the two lovely bedrooms.

A spacious twin room can be made up as a king if requested in advance, and the very pretty double room is temptingly cosy, with luxury bedding and traditional cottage door.

Upstairs is the gorgeous house shower room with reviving walk-in monsoon shower. The smart kitchen is a delight; modern, bright and very well equipped.

Parking for the cottage is on the lane outside and is suitable for a small to medium sized vehicle.

Grasmere is a wonderful location for a holiday in the Lake District.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance.
