“Dove Cottage is an excellent base to explore Allendale, which is a beautiful area.”

It's comfortable and well laid out with everything you need and lovely walking straight from the door. It's comfortable and well laid out with everything you need and lovely walking straight from the door. If you're tall, allow for the low ceilings downstairs, which are mentioned in the listing, and which mean ducking into one side of the bed and taking a sit down shower - and watch your head on the way in! Having said that, the bed is very comfortable, the shower is warm and lovely and there's plenty of space overall. Upstairs there are very good facilities, a well-stocked kitchen, loads of room, comfy chairs and great views. We really liked the effort the owners put into environmentally friendly measures, with wind and solar power, ground-sourced heat, composting and recycling and relevant tips and advice. They also go out of their way to make you feel welcome and well-informed - there is a plate of scones and jam on arrival, and Barry and Elaine are keen to pass on their knowledge of the area and make themselves available to help, without ever being intrusive. They even gave us and the dog a lift back from town one day! The walk to Allendate town is easily doable for anyone who is reasonably fit - it's about 25 minutes, about 2/3 of it with a pavement. The walk back takes a little more effort but is well worth it for the friendly atmosphere in the town's pubs and shops. We strongly recommend Dove Cottage as a place to stay, relax, walk and explore.
