  • "Spacious flat ideal for extended family."

Roomy kitchen diner, two bathrooms very useful. Cosy, comfortable and quiet. No garden but not needed at this time of year. Parking a little way down the road but could drop off or pick up nearby if not too many other visitors filling the roadside. Village shop very close, very tempting bookshop with teas below flat.

The accommodation is wonderfully well equipped and very roomy. We loved it.

  • "As infants are allowed at the property maybe a stairgate would be welcomed and a travel cot as my grandaughter needed both."

We had to barricade the staircase. Otherwise everything was perfect and we will be booking again maybe as early as January when we can book. We looked but your next year bookings werent available.

  • "Excellent property."

Very clean, spacious with lovely bath and shower. The stay really was perfect. One very minor point, as others have said is a bigger tv would be better but we would still mark this 10/10. Thank you to everyone involved.

  • "Paperback writer is a very well equipped and comfortable place to stay."

It couldn’t be nearer to the facilities of Pooley Bridge. A pub is literally next door, another one is straight across the road and yet another facing across the village centre. Book lovers are extremely well catered for, as the apartment has a fantastic collection to indulge in, and if there is nothing there to grab your attention try the bookstore, which you are directly above. There is a small grocery nearby, which has a surprisingly diverse selection. The apartment is well provided with every appliance you need, including a dishwasher and washer dryer ( clothes ). I noticed in other peoples feedback that they had complained about the size of the TV. I was expecting a 14” portable, and although it is smaller than ours at home we found it more than adequate, and our party had two elderly people that coped fine with it. So I wouldn’t worry about that. Can I suggest to the owners that a guestbook is always something I enjoy writing in before I leave, so maybe they could think about that. All in all we had a fantastic time staying in Paperback Writer, and would definitely stay again.

  • "A absolutely fantastic apartment which was so much bigger than expected."

The bathrooms were lovely and modern and the open plan kitchen and lounge were spot on. I had seen that the Tv was small in other reviews but it is a perfect size - we were out and about so much that it didn’t matter and there were loads of board games to ensure we played together as a family. It was in the centre of Pooley Bridge so amazing location. We can’t wait to book and stay again

  • "A great flat in a fantastic location, Pooley Bridge has everything you could need multiple pubs, the food which we tried in 2 of them was excellent along with the service."

2 convenience stores stocking stuff you'd never imagine as well as almost anything you'd need if you've forgotten something. The flat itself is great, heating kept the flat warm, the showers in both the ensuite and in the bathroom are excellent with great water pressure and temperature. Kitchen is well appointed and laid out with a good selection of utensils for cooking. the only downsides were the small tv which wasn't great for the long dark nights in November. There was also quite a lot of dust and animal hair in various places around the flat. That said still a great place and would stay there again

  • "Lovely property, great location and very good facilities; nice and warm, clean and comfortable."

Our only criticism would be that the television is way too small for the size of accommodation !!

  • "We enjoyed a great week at Paperback Writer."

The location was lovely and was quiet at night. It was great to be able to walk straight out from the flat, which was very spacious and was a wonderful base from which to explore the area. There are many places to eat out on the doorstep and the village shop was well stocked. The bathrooms were excellent with plentiful hot water. The beds were super comfy. We found the kitchen well equipped with everything we needed. For older visitors like us it was a shame that the TV was so small and in a position in the living room which made it difficult to view. Some of the upholstery in the living room looked in need of a refurb but we would happily recommend the accommodation as a great place to holiday and would be pleased to return in the future.

  • "Let me start with a positive, the kettle blew the electrics ant the owner dealt with this in a very timely manner and compensated us with some delicious baked from his shop… Now the not so positives - the hot water kept going off until the Wednesday of the holiday, with only 2 days left…this was frustrating and very inconvenient indeed with 2 children and a new born, apparently this was a known fault, I will need part of my payment back to allow for the inconvenience."

The cleanliness was questionable, we had a clean freak in our party and she has left the property infinitely cleaner than when we arrived, we had to take up the rug in the lounge when we arrived as it was FULL of dog hair. Clearly the property hadn’t been cleaned properly between guests as there was underwear under the chair cushion in the lounge and in one of the drawers in the 2nd bedroom. The property is exceptionally noisy, I realise people are on holiday and enjoying themselves, however, this needs to be made clear in the property description, the large holiday hone next door was incredibly noisy with a huge party of guests partying in the garden and, with the general location of the property, sleep was hard to come by. As a family, it would not suit us to come again, 5 members of our family had another property only a few hundred yards away and that was incredibly quiet and a lovely property so please make the noise element clear to future guests. Again, the biggest issue was the lack of hot water, we had to go into Penrith Leisure Centre to shower and couldn’t wash dishes etc for the majority of the stay due to the lack of water. Overall, a very average stay but I would say the property needs a deep clean, the lounge furniture was really dirty so we used our towels and babies blankets to sit on. Thank you

Hi, many thanks for the feedback. We're really sorry that you expereinced these issues. The hot water situation in particular was really annoying and I know that Sykes will be in touch to discuss compensation, which we're happy to agree to, and I can only apologise again. Happily, our boiler is also now working as it should! We've been on to the cleaners to express our dissatisfaction about how you found the flat. They were shocked to hear that and have apologised to us - thank you for letting us know. Best wishes Property Owner

  • "Great location, three pubs within 20 yards of the property, and really quiet location with plenty of walking opportunities."

We walked to the Ullswater 'Streamer' which took about 10 minutes and had a great day out. No problem with the free parking, and a second car can be parked for £4 a day if needed. We had a great time, and would like to stress that this isn't a complaint, it just would have made our stay easier if you did two additional things. If you put a mirror up over the radiator in the master bedroom that would help greatly in getting hair sorted in the morning, as you have a power socket, but no mirror, and also it would help to provide a bigger teapot.

  • "We were excited to be the first guests to stay in this beautiful apartment above the new bookstore (a dream scenario for us!"

) and it did not disappoint. Really spacious accommodation, gorgeously finished throughout in terms of all the furnishings and fittings - clearly done by someone with a great eye for details. The beds were extremely comfortable (so much so that I had to peel back the bedding to find out what make it was for the next time I’m shopping for a mattress!). It felt like a home away from home and I’m looking forward to coming back again, would definitely stay here again on a visit to this part of the Lakes.

Thank you so much for the lovely feedback. We’re really pleased you had such a good time. Very much hope to see you again. All the best! Property Owner

About the location

POOLEY BRIDGE

Penrith 6 miles.

The picturesque village of Pooley Bridge sits on the northerly edge of Lake Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. The name Pooley came to be due to the forming of a large pool, which was left by the fast flowing River Eamont, and the word Bridge was later added when a bridge, which is now 250 years old, was built over the river. Pooley Bridge has many traditional inns and tempting tea rooms, plus the Ullswater Steamers depart from the village, from where a tranquil cruise down the lake to the villages of Glenridding and Howtown can be enjoyed. There are numerous walks with breathtaking views nearby, plus a short walk up to Dunmallard Hill reveals fascinating Iron-Age remains, whilst the towns of Penrith and Keswick are within driving distance. Pooley Bridge is an ideal base for a cottage holiday stay in the stunning Lake District.
