  • "What a mistake booking this property."

Damp , mouldy , dirty. Walls full of mould and dirty marks , paint coming off the walls. Terrible smell of damp. Opened kitchen drawers to find mouldy cutlery. Smoke alarm beeping as battery had ran out . On disconnecting it to find it said change in 2016!!! Phoned owner immediately to complain he apologised and said he would sort it out. But wouldn’t be contactable as his phone was going in for repair. Did absolutely nothing. Booked a week over Xmas but as the house was so disgusting left on Boxing day after 3 days. Had to put all items in dish washer and clean the house so that we could try and at least enjoy Xmas day. Complained to Sykes. Still waiting resolution as the owner doesn’t reply and when he does he lies! Paid £1500 it wasn’t worth a penny. Even though owner admitted the state of the property unwilling to issue any sort of compensation. Extremely disappointed with how Sykes is dealing with the situation. Call after call having to explain the issues again and again as always speak to a different staff member on each call. Last email just says to take up with a third party as owner not willing to give any compensation. Just not good enough! No facility to upload photos on this review but I advise anyone not to book this property. I will be using trip advisor for a more detailed review with photos to prove the state of the property.

  • "The owner was really friendly and helpful throughout the stay."

The house was really spacious and had everything we needed. The village of Brough is small but very charming with a couple pubs, cafés, and a castle in walking distance. Overall really enjoyed the stay!

Thanks Ben. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

About the location

BROUGH

Kirkby Stephen 4 miles; Appleby-in-Westmorland 8 miles.

Brough is a small town located in the Eden Valley, at the foot of the North Pennines, just four miles north of Kirkby Stephen and eight miles east of Appleby-in-Westmorland. It is a twin village, the southern part, Church Brough, lies on a former Roman road and was the setting for the Norman Brough Castle (once the site of a Roman camp), while the northern area, Market Brough, is sited on a medieval road. The difference in the two villages relates to the functions they once served; Church Brough’s houses stand around a market square decorated with a maypole, while Market Brough boasts a wide and long main street. The village’s claim to fame lies in its 18th-19th century importance as a coaching town for the England-Scotland run, where more than 10 inns catered to the stagecoach trade. A beautiful sleepy backwater, it is surrounded by traditional farm meadows and picturesque pastures and fells. Nearby, the traditional market town of Kirkby Stephen, once home to cotton mills and a large manufacturer of shoes and woollen hats, today hosts a variety of shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs for every taste and budget. Enjoy many excellent walks and cycle routes nearby; explore Penrith, Appleby and the magnificent Howgill Fells, enjoy a drink in Tan Hill, England's highest pub, or take a ride on the Settle-Carlisle railway. A superb location, with the whole of the mystical Lake District National Park and the stunning Yorkshire Dales at your fingertips.
