  • "Such a lovely place everything you could need in a holiday rental."

Really pretty part of Lancashire and well positioned for us. I was able to work from the cottage for the week on the WiFi with no problem. Lovely hosts, couldn’t ask for more!

  • "Rating 3 out of 5."

A lovely, clean detached cottage ideal for a short couple’s break, and it has a very comfortable king bed. Please note, the property is located right next to the owner’s house. The owners sit in the conservatory for extensive periods of time, which can feel awkward, especially when you’re unloading and loading up your vehicle right in front of them. The wi-fi is very poor and not suitable for anyone hoping to work away or Netflix binge. Parking on the premises can be difficult and the space is limited. I wouldn’t recommend arriving in a large vehicle because it will not fit in the garage and you may upset one of the owners.

The accommodation is very comfortable and well furnished and there was a delicious welcoming pack of biscuits and chocolate cake provided. The weather on the first few days of our stay was warm and sunny and the owners provided us with comfortable garden loungers so that we could relax in their beautiful mature garden. There was also under cover parking. The owners, Kathryn and Malcolm were helpful and friendly.

Kathryn and Malcolm gave us a very warm welcome and their helpfulness and friendliness make them the perfect hosts. Swallows Barn is a brilliantly designed conversion, well maintained and spotlessly clean, beautifully and comfortably decorated and furnished and superbly equipped in every way. For any future visits to the Forest of Bowland, we won’t want to stay anywhere else.

Clean, tidy and well equipped with safe carport parking. Headroom upstairs may be limited for very tall people but comfortable enough if you are of average height (like us). Thoroughly recommended!

  • "This is a lovely modern, well equipped and well maintained modern, comfortable holiday cottage located privately within the large accessible gardens of the owners property."

It is situated down a drive away from a quiet rural road. The owners, Malcolm and Kathryn are extremely hospitable and welcomed us (with a few treats waiting on arrival) and we also felt we had made friends on leaving. The locality is at the Southern end of the Trough of Bowland and an ideal area for getting out and about in what is a lovely region. Local hostelries are good too. We really recommend Swallows Barn.

Very friendly hosts. But low slanting ceiling on 1st floor took some getting used to with quite a few knocked heads during the week. Kingsize bed was extremely comfortable but very low to the ground.

About the location

LONGRIDGE

Ribchester 3.5 miles; Preston 8 miles

Longridge is a small town and civil parish in the borough of Ribble Valley in Lancashire. Situated 8 miles north-east of the city of Preston, at the western end of Longridge Fell, above the River Ribble. Longridge initially developed outwards from an area around St. Lawrence's Church, at the boundary of the townships of Dilworth and Alston and to the south of the modern-day town centre. Many of the buildings are built of locally quarried sandstone and despite modern developments; the town centre remains largely as it was when it was first established. The town holds a portfolio of gift shops, cafes, antiques and art studios together with a quaint cinema, plus numerous food outlets from takeaways to gastro pubs. Its nearest neighbours are Grimsargh and the Roman town of Ribchester, with its Roman museum and beautiful church of St Mary’s on the banks of the river Ribble. Clitheroe castle is only 20 minutes down the road. Here there is another wealth of interest, from the historic Browsholme Country Estate, host to regular Farmers Markets. To the southeast Longridge Field Day is a long-standing annual event that consists of a parade through the town, and various attractions on the town's recreational playing field. The Forest of Bowland (AONB) shows off an expanse of fells criss-crossed with dry stone walls and dotted with picturesque farms and villages. The hen harrier is the bird symbolised on the Forest of Bowland’s logo as it is their most important breeding ground in England. Beyond the Harrier there is a wealth of other wildlife to be spotted from Kingfishers to the Red Grouse. The rivers Ribble, Calder and Hodder converge near the prestigious Catholic Stonyhurst College, providing idyllic landscapes and walks, not least of which – The Tolkien Trail – lead to an abundance of pubs to quench the thirst afterwards. The area sports numerous agricultural shows, art exhibitions and day festivals of all sorts throughout the summer and is within reach of the Lancaster canal and city, Blackpool and the Lake District, so there is plenty to keep everyone occupied.
