"A delightful holiday let in a lovely village and location."
Arrival and departure very easy. Well equipped. We had a very happy stay! A couple of “issues” the owners may like to look at. The double bed mattress is so soft as to be uncomfortable. It’s fair enough to have 2 singles in the other room but please provide a double duvet for when 2 adult couples are staying? And the kitchen smoke alarm is super sensitive and I couldn’t find a way to turn it off once set off?

"We stayed at the barn for 1 week on 5th September."
The property was excellent with all mod cons at our convenience and in an amazing location. On arrival we were met by a lady who didn't introduce herself to us, but told us off immediately for arriving 15mins early. We offered to wait in the car if it was a problem but was told as we were here now we might as well go in then she walked away. This lady made us feel almost like unwelcome intruders. We later realised that this was the owner and her attitude did not improve when we were leaving and handed over the key, when she berated us for getting her out of bed. The only reason we had to knock was a question concerning the whereabouts of the bins. She replied that if we had cared to look round the back of the property we would have seen them. My husband did look and there was none there. This lady is very unwelcoming and gives the impression that she begrudges having guests at all. The only other things that could be vastly improved are the furniture in the upstairs lounge, especially the 2 seater sofa which was extremely uncomfortable and made us fall towards the middle each time we sat on it. It had definitely seen its day and was not in keeping with the rest of the property. The double bed had also seen it's day, it was so uncomfortable that when you sat on it you had to climb out of the hole to get yourself out. Soft had another meaning for this bed. The cleanliness was also a problem here. There were cobwebs everywhere, strewn across the ceiling and in corners where spiders were sat in their webs. Also when I had need to lift the settee cushion up 2 earwigs ran across. This made us feel very uncomfortable indeed, we spent the week sat seperatley in 2 single leather armchairs which were also uncomfortable to sit on for any length of time in the evening. Such a shame because the property itself is excellent, it is only the old furniture they have put in it that lets down the whole experience and if course the attitude of the owner herself. We love the area and have stayed in many other surrounding properties which were spotlessly clean. Having the owner live next door with this ladys very unwelcoming attitude unfortunately means we will not be returning.

"The Barn was an ideal upside down property to use as a base for exploring Eskdale."
It was just 100 steps away from the local pub and just a strole away to the super Sawmill cafe. It was also an easy 20 minute walk to the beautiful Wast Water There were just a few niggles : Inside the oven needed cleaning. The double bedroom was dusty and the throw over the bed had a mark on it. There were no instructions about recycling.

"Loved our weeks stay at the Barn."
The cottage has everything you need and was very comfortable for the two of us. Liked that you have the Sawmill just down the road for coffee and breakfast and the Strands just over the way for evening meals. Also a great walking area. We definitely plan to return!
So pleased you enjoyed your stay and plan to return Property Owner

"We loved our stay at the barn, really good location with 100s of walks local and a pub just down the road which serves some very nice beers."
We wouldn't hesitate to book again next time we're heading this way on our travels. P.S. It was great waking up to see deer in the garden with the mountains in the background.
So glad you enjoyed your stay Property Owner

"We had such a lovely time and really enjoyed our stay at the cottage and exploring the surrounding area."
The cottage was finished to a high standard and with Neff appliances, it was home from home! We do most of our own cooking when we go on holiday in the UK. We were slightly surprised to not find a few basics; things you would only use sparingly. Salt / pepper, cling film, tin foil. The tea and coffee was an unexpected find but other basics are generally commonplace in properties of this type. A few things that would elevate the stay to perfect would be instructions on bins and recycling as every Council area seem to do this differently. The soft furnishings could be more generous eg cushions in the living room and on the chairs at the dining table. The bathroom was great but something to hold bottles etc in the shower would work well. In sum, great location for fells and coast, and with a few warmer touches, would be a 5* experience. Would visit again!
Thanks for your kind remarks and feedback Property Owner

"A lovely, very well-equipped cottage, tastefully designed and with everything needed to self-cater for a week."
Excellent location with walks (and pub!) on the doorstep. The mattress on the double bed was a little uncomfortable and that room was quite small, but otherwise everything was exactly as we had hoped and we really enjoyed our stay.
Glad you enjoyed your stay and thanks for your kind words. We appreciate the feedback about the bed/size of the room, perhaps a king-size in there was a mistake, particularly if it is proving uncomfortable. Property Owner

"We have stayed in the Wasdale / Eskdale area 4/5 times in recent years, on each occasion at a different property but we would not hesitate in booking The Barn again, Great location for Wasdale Head and walking the high fells."
The owners, Julia and David, live next door and were very helpful during our stay. The weather was lovely all week, sunny and dry. Always nice to have coffee and cake at the Sawmill cafe down the road
Thank you for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed your stay Property Owner

"Really nice cottage, but lacking in some areas for information such as nothing on operation of heating system or what to do with rubbish along with a designated split in cupboard plus information on TV did not fully work."
Finally it would be a nice touch to have a welcome pack as with all other cottages we have been. Ps no visitors book for comments.

Where you’ll be staying
NETHER WASDALE
Gosforth 3.9 miles; Santon Bridge 2.3 miles
Nether Wasdale is a small village situated to the west of Wastwater, the deepest lake in Great Britain. The village is well-served with two pubs, one with its own brewery, a farm shop and café selling local produce and ice cream. This area is the birthplace of climbing and is a superb base for climbing, hiking and all outdoor pursuits. Unlike many lakes, motorised boats are forbidden on Wastwater though canoeing and kayaking are perfect for these unspoilt and tranquil waters which add to the peace and serenity of this stunning part of the Lake District National Park. Wastwater is sided by The Screes and at the head of the lake the fells of Great Gable and Scafell Pike can be reached, popular with hikers and climbers alike. The view from the summit of Great Gable is said to be the finest view in Britain. At Wasdale Head is the church of St. Olaf, one of the smallest churches in England, dating back to 1550 and its beams are said to have come from Viking long boats. Close by are the villages of Santon Bridge and Gosforth.
