  • “A very well designed and maintained cottage.”

It was even better than described

It was even better than described Owners gave us privacy but were there if needed. We were very happy to return to the cottage each day after our travels as it was spacious and peaceful. We have already recommended it to friends on our return.

The property

An outstanding, stone-built converted barn set in lovely grounds, on the site of the owners' home, in the village of Melling, six miles from Kirkby Lonsdale.

This beautiful holiday retreat has been fully renovated by the existing owners to a very high standard making it perfect for a romantic getaway.

With character and charm throughout, the current owners have planned the interior design to both reflect the historical nature of the old barn and create a contemporary feel throughout.

The ground floor consists of a magnificent open plan living area with cosy sitting area, a lovely woodburning stove, bespoke fitted kitchen and a small dining area, all with pretty views of the garden and attached meadow.

A useful cloakroom and spacious entrance hall completes the ground floor.

Upstairs a modern bathroom is a real delight with a bath, walk-in shower and contemporary fittings, as well as the main bedroom having much character and charm with a lovely wooden beam being the centrepiece of the room along with two Velux windows bathing the room in lovely bright light.

The king-size bed is situated in just the right position to take advantage of the floor to ceiling windows and guests can sit in bed with a morning cuppa and watch the sheep grazing in the attached meadow.

Patio doors lead out onto a smart decked area providing a great place to sit out and enjoy an evening meal, a few drinks and take in the lovely countryside.

Melling is situated in the Lune Valley, between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales with many walks from the doorstep.

The market town of Kirkby Lonsdale is close by with an eclectic mix of tearooms, pubs and small independent shops to be explored.

A few miles to the south lies the Forest of Bowland, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its beautiful countryside, amazing wildlife and cultural heritage.

About the location

Kirkby Lonsdale 6 miles; Ingleton 10 miles.

The quiet village of Melling, in the lovely Lune Valley, is bordered by the famous Lake District to the north, and the Yorkshire Dales to the east. A delightful village, with evidence of a motte - as with Arkholme and Whittington - but Melling has no surviving bailey. It's also situated close to where the River Wenning joins the River Lune. Nearby Hornby Castle is set on a high hill overlooking the river and is known as the subject of one of Turner's best-loved paintings. Consisting of a scattering of traditional stone-built houses, a beautiful Norman church and several 'undiscovered' quiet walks around the village and other, more frequented walks and places of interest close by. Nearby Kirkby Lonsdale is a popular town, with the Old Devil's Bridge a delightful spot to stop for a coffee beside the River Lune, while a number of antique shops and curios can be found in the town, along with an excellent selection of restaurants and pubs. 'Ruskin's View' can also be accessed from Kirkby Lonsdale, where you may walk in the famous artist’s footsteps and experience the views that inspired him.
