Where you’ll be staying

BROUGHTON, CUMBRIA

Cockermouth 3 miles; Workington 6.1 miles; Keswick 16.3 miles

This civil parish nestles in the Borough of Allerdale in Cumbria and is split into the villages of Great Broughton and Little Broughton. Positioned some 3 miles west of Cockermouth, just north of River Derwent, which babbles through the Lake District, this quiet village is home to a general store, four pubs, a hotel, as well as being on the bus route to Cockermouth. Little Broughton is made up of a collaboration of modern housing estates and traditional style houses. The market town of Cockermouth is well known as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian. The National Trust now owns the Wordsworth Georgian family home in the centre of the town. It attracts visitors from all over the country, looking to step back in time and experience a piece of the 1770s, when Wordsworth was growing up. There is also an array of shops, pubs and eateries dotted about the town, with excellent walking opportunities right on the doorstep at Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water. Along the west coast of Cumbria, at mouth of the River Derwent, is the port town of Worthington, offering further shops, bars and two theatres. Curwen Hall is an imposing ruin with an interesting history; it was used to shelter Mary Queen of Scots on her last flight to Scotland before her execution. In less than half an hour’s drive, is the Solway Firth and its designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and to the east are the Lakeland Hills waiting to be explored. Keswick boasts a thriving town centre with many more shops to choose from, as well as miniature golf, the famous Theatre by the Lake, the Pencil Museum, fishing and mountain biking opportunities. There is plenty to do in and around this pleasant location, offering a holiday to remember!
