  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Chatelherault."

The property had everything we needed, very well equipped. A small lovely quiet village with lots of lovely walks & drives nearby. Powfoot being out favourite especially with the weather being so nice. Another visit here is definitely on our list.

  • "A lovely cottage but not very disability friendly, the step into the cottage was very difficult for my wife also the step into the main part of the accomodation was high."

the shower step made it impossible for my wife to havce a shower.

  • "We had a very enjoyable week in Ruthwell."

The property was perfect for us being single story, with a walk-in shower and a choice of double or twin rooms. All rooms are spacious and comfortable, although the dining table being in the side conservatory feels slightly less comfortable. However we’re on holiday and it’s a very minor issue as is the tuneful bathroom plumbing! We found the village to be extremely peaceful surrounded by beautiful countryside and places to explore. We also ventured further afield on a couple of days with easy access via Annan to the motorway north.

  • "Lovely cottage."

The garden is not dog secure but we used the bins to make a barrier and all was well. There is no dishwasher, but there is a good washing machine with a line and pegs. A nice touch. The oven shelves could do with a clean please. Plenty of crockery and cutlery which was good as some places have the bare minimum. Anyone staying must read the heating and hot water instructions as they are a bit different from usual. But plenty of water and warm once we sussed it out. We did enjoy our stay, the peace and quiet of the village is wonderful. Lovely walks on the marshes and coast.

  • "Lovely cottage."

Well equipped. Ideal for visiting the area. Would benefit from a guest book to read others views and recommendations for local area. I would certainly recommend the Market Inn Hotel, Castle Douglas. Great food and such lovely friendly staff. Also a carton of milk would be an asset after a long journey as nearest shop some miles away. Wine is lovely but nothing beats a cuppa

  • "Lovely holiday cottage in a quiet village."

Great base for our week's stay and dog loved it too! (its NOT an enclosed garden but plenty of space) Very clean and tidy upon arrival. Kitchen had all the gadgets you would need and great quality. I found the double mattress too hard but hubby was fine so personal preference. Would have been nicer if it was a bigger bed. Sofas could use updating as were not the most comfortable. My last suggestion would be some privacy blinds in the conservatory... Although it's very quiet we felt quite on display in the evenings. Overall very happy with our stay!

owner helpful when broadband went down in the village.we found the settees very uncomfortable which was a shame but it did spoil the holiday you could not relax ,the cottage was clean lovely linnen.but the bathroom floor was covered in grey hairs and dust which let the rest of cleanliness down.would stay again if new settee in place.

  • "The cottage was beautifully appointed for our stay, we arrived just on 4pm, I did have a slight problem with the key safe, but that was because of my nails."

. on entering there was a slight musty odour, however this did not go into the rest of the property, the garden was a lovely feature and the dogs sniffed every inch of it... there was everything we needed for our stay, the bed was very comfortable, and lovely large room, with more than enough cupboard space, the lounge was spacious and furniture altho little dated and worn was comfortable and served its purpose, kitchen was well equipped, however only used it for breakfast, the heating system worked well, and believe me its was needed as very wet and windy and temperature dropped in late afternoon, there is a lovely pub The Farmers Inn approximately 1 mile away, in the summer I imagine it would be a lovely walk, however we took car as raining. All in all we had as lovely 3 night stay, and the dogs enjoyed themselves

  • "The cottage was homely, cozy and spotlessly clean."

The village is peaceful, amazing at night to stand in the garden and look at the stars. We had hundreds of geese flying overhead, perfect for birdwatching and dogwalking. I would highly recommend this cottage.

  • "We had such a wonderful time."

The location of our cottage was perfect. It provided a combination of peace and tranquillity alongside easy access to beautiful scenery. The locals we met, whilst dog walking, were friendly and engaging. The cottage itself was well equipped and had everything you could need, with a sunny garden. The bathroom offered a choice of a walk-in shower and a bath which was ideal, and the water pressure was great. The 2 bedrooms were both spacious and well equipped with coat hangers and a hairdryer. There was a roller blind as well as curtains in the bedrooms which gave us the option of darkening the rooms for a good nights sleep. The main bedroom could have easily accommodated a king size or even a super king sized bed, which would have been an added bonus, as we found the double bed was small and too firm (just our personal preference). All in all a great place to stay.

About the location

RUTHWELL

Annan 7 miles; Dumfries 10 miles.

The small village of Ruthwell is located between the towns of Annan and Dumfries on the Solway Firth in Dumfries and Galloway. The village was home to Dr. Henry Duncan who founded the world’s first commercial savings bank and the village is now home to the Savings Bank Museum. Just 7 miles away is the historic Royal Burgh of Annan which lies at the start of the Solway Coast Trail - a drive which takes you on quiet roads to a wealth of castles and abbeys of incredible beauty and interest. Once an important trading port, the town is made up of many traditional red stone buildings and boasts a rich history of ship building and fishing. Ten miles away from Ruthwell is Dumfries which is known as 'Queen of the South'. Founded as a Royal Burgh in 1186, the surrounding area contains many castles, abbeys and even a Tibetan Buddhist Centre. Many forests abound with excellent walking and cycling. Dumfries is also a good centre for touring the rest of the area - the spectacular triangular Caerlaverock Castle and its nature reserve; New Abbey and the Solway Coast - and a starting point for travelling west into the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright and the rest of Galloway.
