The property

Herdwick Croft is a delightful property resting in the village of Bassenthwaite in Cumbria.

Offering a charming retreat for families and friends seeking a break within the Lake District National Park., boasting countryside views, warming woodburning stoves, and access to excellent leisure facilities nearby, this home provides an inviting base for an enjoyable stay.

Arriving at Herdwick Croft, you sweep through the gated entrance and park beside the neat hedges that border the garden, where a fountain statue stands quietly among the greenery and open countryside fields stretch beyond.

The peaceful surroundings of Bassenthwaite make an immediate impression as you step out into the calm air.

Inside, the tiled kitchen invites you to settle in by warming the range cooker and preparing something hearty after time exploring the Lakes.

Its practical layout and easy flow encourage you to move around freely as you gather ingredients and unwind from the day.

From here, you continue into the large dining room, where tall windows fill the wooden floorboards with natural light.

The woodburning stove adds a gentle glow as everyone gathers at the table, creating a welcoming place to share meals and lingering conversations.

When you are ready to unwind, the sitting room offers leather sofas and a bay window that brings brightness and character to the space, with garden views providing a restful backdrop.

Each room throughout the house includes a TV, allowing relaxed lie‑ins and quieter moments whenever you wish.

The games room brings a livelier atmosphere.

Another bay window brightens the room and enhances its charm, while the woodburning stove creates warmth as you set up a game of darts or challenge friends to a round of pool.

Comfortable seating makes it an inviting social space for both players and spectators.

As the evening softens, head upstairs to refresh in the family bathroom before retreating to the bedrooms along the landing.

One double bedroom features a TV and views across the garden towards the far end of Bassenthwaite, with mountain and lake scenery in the distance, along with an en suite walk‑in shower.

The twin room has its own TV and a bay window framing countryside and river views.

The four-poster double bedroom offers a peaceful vantage point with a TV and a chair placed to admire the mountain and lake backdrop, accompanied by an en-suite bath that encourages a long, unhurried soak.

In the morning, step back outside to the quiet of the garden, where the fountain statue and field views set a gentle tone for the day ahead.

A pleasant walk brings you to a nearby hotel and spa, where guest passes provide access to facilities such as an infinity edge pool, outdoor hot tub, hydrotherapy pool, aroma room, steam room, sauna, rain dance shower, gym and treatment rooms, all arranged through the owners.

Pack your hiking boots and explore, Whinlatter Forest offers woodland trails where beams of light shift between tall pines and the air carries the scent of greenery.

Keswick provides a lively contrast with independent shops, galleries, theatres and lakeside strolls beside Derwentwater.

To the west, Cockermouth reveals Georgian streets, artisan food shops and heritage‑rich corners that make it a rewarding place to wander and dine.

With scenic walks, cultural highlights and atmospheric towns within easy reach, Herdwick Croft offers an appealing base from which to enjoy the northern Lakes.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £300.

BASSENTHWAITE

Keswick 8 miles; Cockermouth 9 miles.

An attractive village in the Northern Lakes, Bassenthwaite lies just a short distance to the north east of Bassenthwaite Lake, and retains its traditional rural feel, with a stream flowing gently on the outskirts, whitewashed Lakeland cottages, a pleasant vllage green and a real ale inn full of character! Bassenthwaite Lake itself, while boasting gentler scenery than others in the region, is still one of the most picturesque places in England. Places of interest nearby include Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the Lake with small open-air theatre (reputedly frequented by poets such as Tennyson and Wordsworth), Lake District Wildlife Park, and Dodd Wood. Most of the attractions of the Lake District are within easy reach and the quieter Northern Fells are almost on the doorstep. The nearby towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, both have weekly markets and offer a good range of amenities. The scenery of the Yorkshire Dales is within touring distance, as is the city of Carlisle and Hadrians Wall country.
