  • "The cottage and location were perfect had a very relaxing stay everything we needed was supplied only one big complaint was that the lounge furniture was not very comfy for cozy nights in and the second was we thought that a small essential welcome pack was general practice but not supplied."

  • "Very nice cottage - second visit."

Good big grassy garden. Would appreciate table to go with bench- think there used to be one?? Nice little summerhouse with seat. Characterful. Nice and clean and provided with soap, loo roll, kitchen roll, etc which is very handy. Was glad to find a hairdryer as I'd forgotten mine. Unseasonably chilly week so had to use the heating a little and the heaters are a bit tricky to set ie not all responded to the instructions in the manufacturer's book...

  • "We absolutely loved it at Lanthorn Cottage."

The 200 year old cottage is lovely, and the long garden was perfect for our dog to run up and down with a ball. The summer house was used by us daily, for reading a book or watching an ipad in the lovely peaceful surroundings. The kitchen had everything we needed, and the living room was cozy in the evenings. The beach was a short 10 minute walk away, through a field with a public footpath, turning left as you come out of the cottage road onto Grub Street, and then turn right off of Grub Street when you see the opening of the field. There's a clear walkway through the field, and then walk along the back of the caravan park and keep heading towards the lighthouse (zoom in on google maps or google earth, you can clearly see the footpath). There is a Tesco about 15 minutes drive away, but we've been to Eccles on Sea previously so knew our way around the area. I would always say to people who are looking to book a holiday anywhere, to do your research before finally booking. Although Sykes wont give you the full address of the cottage prior to your full payment being made, it does show you where the property is on the map and it's not that difficult to work out where the cottage is from the image shown on the website, or you can google the rough address and see whats local to the cottage, and where the beach is. I would say that we will probably be back to Lanthorn Cottage at some point, as we loved how quiet it was there, surrounded by fields and birdsong. The Housekeeper Siobhan was amazing, she gave us all the information we needed before we got there and nothing was too much trouble, not that we had any problems at all. The only reason we contacted her was to ask a couple of questions before we arrived and to thank her when we left. All in all, we would highly recommend Lanthorn Cottage.

  • "Idled by description of property."

It states amenities are .1 of a mile to shop, pub and beach. It is actually over a mile. I am disabled and chose this property on the basis of location. Cottage is situated down a narrow country lane so I did not feel safe using my mobility scooter. Beds were very uncomfortable and I went out and purchased a 10.5 tog duvet to put on top of the mattress. I was in so much pain that we left on the Thursday. NO WELCOME PACK PROVIDED. We are trying to resolve issues with Skkes Cottages as they listed the description of the cottage. You cannot contact them by email and indeed by their portal. In the end I sent a recoded delivery letter but no reply as of yet.

Thank you for your comments, and we are sorry we didn’t meet your expectations on this occasion. We have asked Sykes to correct their information as a priority, and will look to improving the location description too. We will also be including a welcome pack for future guests. We are especially sorry your experience bed was so poor, as the mattress was replaced by John Lewis last Nov (’23). However, we shall investigate a mattress topper to hopefully improve matters. • "House was really cute and location was easy."

Really big enclosed garden and private parking. Cleanliness and general maintenance let it down. Facilities were minimal - only 4 mugs, bowls, plates etc. Bath towels were tiny and wouldn’t be suitable for a lot of people. Listing stated BBQ and garden furniture but they had been removed. Netflix seemed ad hoc which may be due to WiFi. Next door neighbour was very noisy.

  • "A very attractive cottage with many original features."

The living space was rather smaller than anticipated. It was nicely furnished but the sitting room furniture was not very comfortable. This was the first time we have arrived at a self catering accommodation to find no welcome pack - not so much as a few teabags and a pint of milk. There were also no cleaning products in the kitchen or bathroom. The garden was lovely and our Staffie enjoyed it - the fence at the front was relatively low so possibly not secure for a larger dog. Location was beautiful- very peaceful. The village is very small with only a pub. I believe the caravan park may have a shop for provisions- otherwise it is a 10 min drive to the nearest shop. Access to the beach was an easy 15 min walk. Communication with the cottage caretaker was very good.

Thank you for your comments and observations. We will be ensuring a modest welcome pack is available in future. We have also asked the caretake to ensure cleaning products are available in the house too for future visitors. We hope to welcome you again! Property Owner

  • "Disappointing no welcome pack on arrival."

We set off to walk the 0.1 mile to the shop as advertised. That was over a mile to the shop that was closed. Pub was also a mile to walk and beach even further. We are both pensioners and chose this property because of close proximity to amenities as advertised. This brakes the trade description. We would not of booked it if we had known. Grass in garden extremely long. Towels need replacing. Would not recommend to anyone.

Thank you for your comments. We've asked Sykes to update their information about the shops as a priority, and we're sorry this along with the other facilities did not meet your expectations. We will endeavour to improve matters for future guests. Property Owner

  • "Cottage was very clean and had a pretty garden."

Great parking but had slight difficulty finding it as SatNav directed us to opposite end of Grub Street for some reason. Cottage was well equipped and cosy with the log burner alight and we had a relaxing break. Information on Sykes stated that beach, shop and pub were 0.1 miles away when in fact this turned out to be 1 mile for all. We did the walk on a lovely day but as lanes have no pavements this would not be great at night, or if you have young children. The close proximity of shop, pub, beach etc was one of the main reasons for booking the cottage so was disappointed to find that this was not the case and suggest information on Sykes is updated. Also, do not rely on the village shop for all your needs. Stocks lots of alcohol and gifts such as tea towels and coasters but slightly (extremely!) lacking in most other basics but there are plenty of nearby places to buy supplies which are a short drive away.

Thank you for your comments and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We’ve asked Sykes to update their information as a priority. There are some shops in nearby Walcott, or further afield in Stalham but indeed, they’re not within a gentle stroll. Our apologies for that, and hope it didn’t diminish your enjoyment too much. We hope to see you again. Property Owner

Thank you for your feedback, and we’re glad you enjoyed your stay. We’ve noted your comments, and will be passing them along to our maintenance people for attention. We hope this didn’t diminish your experience too much, and that we will see you again in the future. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our stay very much."

The dog loved the garden. We loved the log burner. Great to be able to walk to the beach and pub. If I’m being totally honest the bed was a bit small, we’re used to a king size. Just be warned, there are no cleaning products at all. I had taken my own.

Thanks for your comments, and we’re thrilled you enjoyed your stay. We’ve asked our caretaker to make sure cleaning products are available in the house (rather than in the storage shed) – so our apologies for that. Noted comments about the bed too, and have passed that on to our maintenance people. We hope to welcome you back again. Property Owner

About the location

HAPPISBURGH, EAST ANGLIA

Norwich 19.3 miles; Great Yarmouth 22.5 miles

This historic village brushes the East Anglian coastline in the English county of Norfolk. Its lighthouse is the oldest working light in the area, as well as being the only independently run beacon in Great Britain, dating back to 1790. Its imposing tower of red and white stands proudly on the north-eastern headland surrounded by verdant countryside. You can visit this beautiful structure during public open days and climb the 112 steps up to the lantern. Another notable building in the village is St. Mary's Church, a 15th century landmark, whose tower warned mariners of the position of the perilous sandbanks nearby. This church also has set open days, where you can enjoy splendid views of the sea and enveloping fields from the top of the tower. Enjoy a picturesque stroll down to the beach and watch the lifeboats speedily tackle the untamed seas. There is also a village trail for you to amble, taking you past all the Happisburgh landmarks worth seeing. The village of Winterton-on-Sea is within easy reach by car and boasts a vast beach and wildlife-rich nature reserve that has attracted colonies of Terns and rare Natterjack toads. The old fishermen's cottages and village church makes it an idyllic location to bring the family for a day out. Further afield is the city of Norwich with its two cathedrals and Norman castle, whilst the popular seaside resort of Great Yarmouth offers one of Britain’s largest open air markets. A wonderful destination for your next holiday by the sea.
