  • "Lovely stay at Beckdale, which is very comfortable, tastefully furnished and decorated to a high standard."

It is a credit to the owner, Claire and her family, who made us very welcome. It is so convenient for all the amenities in beautiful Thornton le Dale and handy for the coast and places such as York, Malton, Pickering and Helmsley. Situated between a Bakery/Cafe and Gift shop owned by the same family you don't have far to go for treats. The Buck Inn is 50 yards away and we had several fantastic meals there. Will definitely book again.

  • "We had a lovely stay at the cottage for our holiday."

It’s a high-Standard refurbished property with modern appliances. It’s clean, beautiful and cozy. The location is excellent. We used it as a base to visit Whitby, Scarborough, Castle Howard and York. The owner of the property owns shops, like a bakery, cafe and gift shop which are just next door to it. It’s also very close the the local restaurants. I would say it is located in the centre of the village. We have nearly found everything we need, even a hair dryer for each bedroom. But I’d like to remind you to bring kitchen paper, watching up gloves, hand wash and bin bags if you plan to use the kitchen for your own cooking. There’re lots of decorations inside, which bring nice and romantic atmosphere to the cottage. Couples and any adult guests would like them. However, our 4 year old son was so curious to the Christmas tree on a side table in the living room that he touched it and tree fell down and damaged a glass pot under it. This made us feel sorry for that. Fortunately the owners are very friendly and kind. We sort it out eventually. Overall, we enjoyed our stay there and may pay a visit again in the future.

Only thing I would have liked would have been some coffee in canister on arrival & more toilet rolls. But they are the only negatives, just so lovely, all good quality towels, bed linen & furniture & soft furnishing. Great location just a minute away from a lovely pub

You couldn’t ask for a more cosy & comfortable place to stay - especially at Christmas time overlooking the beautiful village festive display. The owners are so friendly & helpful. The sweet treats from the adjoining bakery & fresh milk on arrival were an added delight to our welcome. Very clean throughtout & super comfy beds. We can’t wait for our next visit.

  • "Cottage exceeded our expectations."

The interior design was gorgeous retaining the cottages character but modernised for comfort. It was warm and cosy to return to. The bakery next door and the gift shop were owned by the family and we were given 20% off discount which was a lovely gesture. Was given a lovely welcome gift from the bakery. We slept like logs, even though it's, a busy road as set back. It's, a great location for local walks. We walked to Dalby Forest also used the fantastic bus services outside the cottage to visit York. Malton and Scarborough. Due to bad weather the road to Whitby was closed as we chose a late winter break. Ate at the Buck was great food and ffriendly Landlord and Landlady and locals New Inn great local with roaring fire. Pizza and Fish and Chips. Chocolate shop. Supermarket all in the village. Pickering has more shops if needed and has the steam railway for travel also. Closed when we were there for Santa Specials. All you could need on doorstep. We will come back here to continue our travels! Also great position for National Trust and English Heritage properties.

  • "The living space downstairs is very dark and lacks natural light."

It also needs more lighting in the living room i.e a main ceiling light. The sofa is particularly low set with a lack support which meant it was extremely uncomfortable. People with mobility issues would struggle to use it. Looks very much like some of the windows to the front of the property (esp. in the master bedroom) have rotten frames due to dampness / condensation and black mould is present which was a concern due to wife's asthma. Drying screen was insufficient for drying washing for three people, and the ironing cover does not fit the large ironing board which made it unsafe to use. Cleanliness on arrival was OK, but could have been better. Bedding was crisp and clean, but bathroom and kitchen could have been cleaner. Underestimated the busyness of the road on which the cottage is located both in terms of traffic (A170 seems to be a pretty main road to and from Scarborough) and pedestrians. We had people regularly having a good look in and even pressing their nose up against the living room window to look inside. This cottage is rated 5* on the sykes website. We don't think that is accurate.

Location brilliant. Lovely cakes on arrival. The only downside for us was the noise from the traffic. Just because we are not used to it. But apart from that excellent stay. Thanks

  • "Extremely well appointed for a short stay."

We stayed for a month and struggled with the lack of privacy during the busy summer in the village. Also lack of drying facilities and the advertised barbecue and fire pit was a shame. Loved the baked goods provided on arrival.

  • "We enjoyed our stay at Beckdale Cottage."

It was very comfortably furnished with all amenities, the only thing missing was the shaver point in the bathroom. Ideally located for the bakery, pub, chocolate shop and ice cream shop. Not a good place if you are on a diet. The staff in the pub were lovely and I recommend the Korean Chicken. In fact everyone we spoke to in the village including the owner of the cottage were friendly and helpful. It’s a very pretty village, liked it so much we booked again for next year.

  • "Beckdale is a stunning cottage, it is for the lover of contemporary style."

The cottage was clean apart from a few dirt glasses and some cutlery, we washed what we were going to use. The cottage sits between a busy gift shop and tea room. This meant people passing constantly, the road outside the main road, so also busy. On reflection, if Beckdale situated up a quiet lane, it would have been more pleasing.

The 10am checkout is ridiculous as is the cleaning regime requied. It turned a relaxing stay into a stressful rushed one and because of this i wouldnt book with Sykes again. Also parking is an issue, directions were difficult to understand - the 1 car parking space is a long way away for brining in bags etc in the rain... We have an electric car and found charging it to be an issue; some information re charging points would have been really helpful.
