  • "We had a really wonderful stay and would love to come back."

The lodge and facilities were all exceptional. There are a few minor things that it would have been nice to have: Visitors book (with a pocket for the leisure pass as we couldn’t find it until we left - thankfully the leisure centre staff weren’t bothered) Personalised recommendations re places to eat and visit rather than just menus Jar of dog treats? Chopping board Cling film / foil and/or sandwich bags Washing up liquid, laundry liquid (little samples for one wash would be fine) Salt and pepper Hand Soap in bathrooms, cups for toothbrushes *****New Pillows and mattress needed urgently for master bed *****Hoover not working Took us ages to work out that the bathroom lights didn’t have a switch!!!! First fire in log burner equipment would have been nice as we arrived after shop closed. Extra tea towel (s) Instructions for washing machine Nespresso machine Blankets for sofa or extra blankets and pillows in kids bedroom Plastic plates and bowls for kids Small saucepan Again, many thanks for our stay it was the best short break we’ve had in a long while. The easy check in, log burner, pool, and access to the beach were all highlights, the friendly staff, little shop, dog friendly beach, full size dishwasher and fab showers would bring us back in a heartbeat.

Very warm and cosy on an evening after being out and about through the day. The indoor pool was great and the gym the on site pub was handy for a meal which was reasonable. Would like to see a something to keep the leisure pass in as this always seams to go walkies that’s people for you. All in all a great stay we look forward to our next visit.

  • "We had a fantastic week at The Bay."

The pool was excellent and we only had to queue for 10 minutes on one occasion. There were no leisure passes in the cottage but we asked at reception and they were provided. The beach is stunning, and worth the cost of the holiday alone. I felt the quality of the food in the pub had decreased since last year. We ate there for one meal but ventured into Filey on the other occasions we wanted to dine out. The cottage itself was exactly as described, we had no issues with the standard of cleaning that other reviews had mentioned. I would agree that it would benefit from more crockery though! Very handy to have your own parking space, although it is a tight squeeze.

  • "Without a doubt, the dirtiest place I’ve ever stayed."

We thought the fact it had a 5 star rating meant that previous complaints had been addressed. We were so wrong! Every single surface had a layer of dust on it. Not to mention the many dead bugs we found throughout the property. We actually spent an hour cleaning but gave up as it would’ve taken a whole day to get the place even remotely clean. The kitchen was disgusting. There were old sausages and trays dripping with grease in the oven. The tops of the cupboards were thick with grease and dust. Inside the cupboards was no better, with one full of dog hair and dust. The beds are beyond uncomfortable, with the main bed having seemingly no cushioning other than springs that dig into you making sleep almost impossible. The en suite in the main bedroom had a rotten, mouldy doorframe and the toilet roll holder is hanging off the wall. The other bedroom is barely any better but my son said he was very uncomfortable. The main light over the dining table had so much dust on it that it was grey. I cleaned it to reveal it was actually black. The fan above the living space had thick black dust all over the blades but is too high to clean. The tv unit seems to be held up with the help of a board game. We would have complained immediately but it’s obvious from the previous reviews that nothing would have been done so we just did our best to enjoy the holiday and spent as little time as possible in the cabin. Ignoring the issues, the actual holiday village is great. We’ve stayed before so know the standards that can usually be expected. The location is great and it’s easy to travel between the various nearby towns of Filey, Scarborough and Bridlington etc. just a shame that the sea dog is in the state it’s in.

Whilst I accept there were some cleaning issues at the property, mainly due to staffing issues with my cleaning company, many of the issues raised were minor and I believe over-stated in the review. A help line was fully available in the welcome brochure, which was not used by the guest, and had this been contacted then most of the cleaning issues could have been resolved very quickly. With regard to the comments re the beds, one new mattress has been on order for some time and delivery is awaited after a delay, the other bed will be checked and mattress replaced if required, though this was checked and found OK a couple of months ago. • "Similar to a previous review, we found the property to be a bit shabby which was disappointing when Sykes have rated it as 5."

The process of getting anyone to accept responsibility for the issues is also frustrating. There is a maintenance team but any issue was pretty much dismissed as they are too busy. Sykes pass the complaint to the owner who doesn't respond so you are left wondering why bother complaining which is probably what they want. I dislike having to complain especially when you're on holiday but when there is a difference between what they advertise and what you get, I think you should raise it. The property needs a thorough clean and basic things like having enough crockery for the number of guests (only 3 bowls), and ensuring items were usable (broken blind, broken coat hooks, broken kitchen items), should be standard. Maybe my standards are too high. The outside furniture of the property was also very shabby and weeds/moss everywhere which doesn't make for a nice, relaxed environment and isn't what is depicted on the website. Overall, the Bay complex is very nice and we enjoyed our time there but the property was a disappointment. If we decide to return, I would look for an alternative property on the site.

I received no notification about this complaint due to issues with the email system. Once Sykes had phoned me to request a response to this complaint I contacted my service company to get feedback and request all problems were immediately attended to and resolved and to ensure cleaning operations were up to the standard required. The only issue needed to be resolved is the outside furniture which requires a couple of rain free days to sand down and re paint, this will be done at the earliest opportunity. I have since asked Sykes to offer a reimbursement to the guest for the inconvenience which I hope has been done, but I have received no advice from Sykes regarding this offer. Property Owner

I wanted to make the best of my break. The dishwasher was full of dirty dishes. Sweet wrappers, lipstick and some dubious personal cream behind the bed . Toilet brushes absolutely disgusting no need to photograph excrement caked on. Thick black dust and actual piles of it behind tv . Toast crumbs on side . Towels marked wouldn’t use: . I know the owner paid for a cleaner as I saw them leaving as I pulled up, so unfair for the owners as they obv has paid but much of this dirt was very old a surface clean wouldn’t suffice. Lightbulbs out in bathroom made it dark for anyone less able might been issue . The furniture is good and obviously cared about . Kitchen well equipped. Fabulous location (15th visit to the bay) . Whoever is the cleaning company I would be looking to terminate their contract and appoint a company that does the job which you pay them for. I had read in earlier post that the lodge was freezing on arrival but it didn’t take long for the lodge to heat up it would have been nice if the heating was on low on arrival. The general cleanliness was not good, dusty, dirty walls, areas behind/ under tables had not been swept. The chair in the living space was very shabby, this has been mentioned in previous reviews, but not rectified. The main shower had a damaged and dirty flex from shower head to wall. Skirting boards were also grubby and the chrome shaver point was rusty. There wasn’t enough crockery, only 2 small plates, some of the glasses in the cupboard needed washing before use. These holiday homes are all the same in structure, as we have experienced but very different in what is provided and the standard of upkeep from the companies that owners rely on or the owners themselves. Disappointed with this one. Definitely not a 5 star rating compared with the other properties offered by Sykes holidays on this site.

Really nicely done out so it did feel like a bit of a treat to be there. My Mum has a similar pre-fab lodge at another resort, but this felt much more like a beach house then being in a caravan -light and airy with lovely high ceilings. Took full advantage of the washer/dryer! Our kids loved the arcade and my oldest son really enjoyed an Easter craft workshop we booked onto. The food in the pub is lovely -the pizzas are immense! Easy access to the beach -shame the rubbish weather meant we couldn't enjoy it as much as we would have liked. Onsite swimming pool was FREEZING! Be warned! And it rained so much that the adventure playground was waterlogged, but you can't plan for the weather! I think if we came again we'd wait until summer!

Had a tv in each room which was bonus for the kids. Nice big fridge and freezer. 2 bathrooms which was great when there is 4 of you. Am not one to complain about much but the only real downfalls mainly for my kids and partner was that the bathroom off twin the automatic light wouldn't always come on especially for them in the night, the double bed mattress was very pingy every time your turned over and also parking was an issue getting the kids in and out the car unless you pulled off the somewhat narrow drive which also could be fairly slippy when wet. Other than these few things it was a lovely week enjoying the surroundings and places to visit Scarborough, york, filey and bridlington

Next issue was it was freezing, I appreciate the price of electric but could the heating of not been switched on an hour before, Mum is 82 and was frozen, no thermostat so found the welcome pack and discovered all run by the boiler so switched it on but lit the wood burner too, brought our own logs and some fire lighters glad we did as nothing provided. We have booked 2 of these Beach Houses before and they are all set out the same and always loved them but I was quite disappointed with this one, I realise that the information does not mention providing, toiletries but no hand soap or anything to wash your hands when soap dish and dispensers provided, well in one bathroom anyway. kitchen lacking basics like dish cloth, washing up liquid, scissors and clean cups, washed everything before use. The shower in the Jack & Jill bathroom was dirty at the bottom near the door runners and when you turn it on it leaks all over the floor. It isn’t a cheap stay for 3 days but I would expect a chair in the lounge not to be shedding the leather as you sit in it. Didn’t spoil our weekend but not knowing if we can get back through the dodgy front door was no fun.

Re the lock problem, this was allegedly repaired, an invoice I have already paid the contractor. I personally visited on the 5th Feb and the lock was checked several times and appeared ok. The service company who look after the property were instructed to turn the heating on prior to each visit in cold weather and this will be addressed with them. The showers were checked when I visited and were clean so the comment is surprising but again will be checked with the service company. The chair in the living room has been slightly damaged likely by visitors dogs when in the property, I would dispute that it is 'shedding leather' , actually not leather! , it is scuffed in one corner. We actually provided a 'throw' for the chair, but this disappeared very quickly after it had been fitted, explanation unknown? Dish cloth, scissors and clean cups should have been in the property and this will be also taken up with my service provider. We do not provide most toiletries, but soap dispensers should have been filled, again this will be checked and rectified. The service company (contact details in the property) are contactable 24 hours a day, so I would have expected any 'key' issues to be relayed to them so they can hopefully be resolved quickly. I was with my parents and my son, who is nearly two, so being on one level was perfect as he was able to safely explore the holiday home. The beds were really comfy, and the place felt so light and airy. There were only a few things that brought my rating down. The lack of some pots and pans/chopping boards, the place could do with some. We couldn't find the telly for the remote in the living area, only the fire stick remote so we were having to figure out watching live TV through ITV Hub/BBC iPlayer etc. We didn't have any information regarding using the facilities on the Bay, such as swimming, so we ended up not going. There were also some belongings left behind from the previous guest, a t-shirt that was on the floor in the living area (it does make you question how much cleaning happened before we arrived). Failing all that, we did still enjoy our break away. I think if those little details were looked at, a nice welcome message out on the table perhaps with all the info we needed (such as the swimming cards, the guest book etc although the biscuits and coffee in the box were nice touch), then it would of made our stay a 10/10.

Have the owners heard of a thing called COVID 19? Outside decking and furniture needs attention also. The only reason I didn't complain while I was there was due to the fact my wife asked me to not make a fuss as it would spoil our break. As a cleaning business owner for over 20 years I would strongly urge your management to vet the condition of the properties you let and that the property owner spend some of the money they charge to invest in the property urgently. We have stayed at the Bay on 2 other occasions and had no issues but if I am being honest this experience had left me wondering if I should use Sykes again or stay at the Bay. The state of this particular property has insured I would never stay at the Sea Dog again. There are some issues, which were rightly raised, many of which I was not aware of, and these will be resolved as quickly as possible. There have been some issues with my cleaning company and I have met the owner to discuss and to agree an action plan to rectify the issues raised and to maintain this standard going forward. Though the recent review questions my financial commitment to resolve the issues, I can assure all future guests that this is not the situation and finance will be provided, where needed, to bring the property back to the previous high standard. I would also add that some of the external issues, i.e., broken ropes on the patio, are the responsibility of The Bay, and these issues were reported to The Bay several weeks ago but the repairs had not been done. I have spoken to The Bay again and they have assured me the repairs will be done as a matter of urgency. • "Even though we had to cut short our holiday owing to illness we had no complaints about the actual accommodation which was superb."

What we didn't like was the fact that the lodges were so close together, and when we arrived there was no one in the lodges either side so it was lovely and peaceful. Then on the third day a family with three or four young children and a dog moved in next door and it was noisy and chaotic and spoiled things. The advert said there would be fire lighting equipment and enough for the wood-burner to start us off after which we would have to buy our fuel - but when we arrived there was a box of matches and an empty firelighter box - nothing else, which was disappointing. We have enjoyed Sykes cottage holidays for many years, and though Sea Dog was superbly appointed and very comfortable, being on a site with lots of other lodges was the wrong choice. In future we will book an independent cottages as far away from a `holiday village' as possible!

Our dog loved lying in front of the patio doors and watching the ducks and rabbits wander by. We love Filey Bay complex as it is quiet. Would recommend the cafe and pub on site.

  • "Had a lovely break in Yorkshire at the sea dog cottage, excellent facilities and really liked the complex."

Enjoyed going swimming and to the pub in the evening. The log burner adds a real coziness to the place. The local area was lovely, enjoyed an afternoon tea at a nearby hotel, as well as a day in Whitby which was very pretty. Only improvement would be that the place was freezing when we arrived and took a long time to heat up, I guess because the living room diner is a large space but there was no way of using the fire when we arrived, we had to run out to buy wood, kindling and matches, but also the radiator in the hallway didn’t get very hot compared to others, I think it needs bleeding. As soon as the place warmed up it was wonderful though. Would definitely recommend booking this place.

It needs reporting to the owners as could cause a lot of damage. Other wise had a really good week and will most definatley be using sea dog again.

About the location

FILEY

Scarborough 7.7 miles; Bridlington 10.5 miles.

Filey is a traditional English seaside resort with a friendly atmosphere, offering a restful holiday, making an ideal place to stay for walkers and wildlife watchers at any time of the year. A real gem on the Yorkshire coast. A fishing town on the North East Coast, Filey has enjoyed a reputation of being a resort since Victorian times, set beside the magnificent Filey Bay, a long stretch of beautiful sand, with Filey Brigg and its shallow rockpools to the north. Filey Brigg is a low headland that protects Filey Bay and provides good bird watching and seawatching opportunities all year round. The 400 ft high Bempton Cliffs (RSPB Reserve) to the south of Filey Bay are home to over 250,000 seabirds in the summer. Gannets, kittiwakes, puffins, guillimots and razorbills all nest there. Gannets are regularly seen diving for fish in Filey Bay. The Brigg area is an ideal place to watch for common and rarer waders, seabirds and migrating warblers, finches and thrushes. As well as seabirds, seals and other marine life, such as porpoises dolphins and minke whales can be seen in the sea around the Brigg. The town itself seems almost caught in a time warp, retaining much of its character with individual shops, narrow paths and ginnels. There is a small coble landing, a slipway where local fishermen keep their boats, plus delightful beach chalets that can be hired through the summer months. The bay is edged with two promenades and there are various gardens, where brass bands play on a Sunday afternoon. This small town is family orientated, crazy golf and candy floss. Also in Filey there is the Filey Dams Nature Reserve, a wetland reserve where common and rare waders and wildfowl can be seen as well as autumn gatherings of swallows, sand martins and house martins. Also there is Parish Wood (just off Sycamore Avenue) an unexpected gem that offers a wealth of wildlife. Willow warbler, chiffchaff, blackcap and tree sparrows breed there and a wide variety of other species are regularly seen such as great spotted woodpeckers and sparrow hawks. Parish Wood also provides shelter and food for a wide range of migrant bird species such as goldcrests, pied and spotted flycatchers, warblers, finches, thrushes and woodcocks. A short drive brings you to the busier town of Scarborough where for family fun you can visit the Alpamare Waterpark, a waterpark unlike anything the UK has ever seen before, as well as plenty to explore and discover in this lovely area.
