  • "We had a lovely stay here."

I was with my parents and my son, who is nearly two, so being on one level was perfect as he was able to safely explore the holiday home. The beds were really comfy, and the place felt so light and airy. There were only a few things that brought my rating down. The lack of some pots and pans/chopping boards, the place could do with some. We couldn't find the telly for the remote in the living area, only the fire stick remote so we were having to figure out watching live TV through ITV Hub/BBC iPlayer etc. We didn't have any information regarding using the facilities on the Bay, such as swimming, so we ended up not going. There were also some belongings left behind from the previous guest, a t-shirt that was on the floor in the living area (it does make you question how much cleaning happened before we arrived). Failing all that, we did still enjoy our break away. I think if those little details were looked at, a nice welcome message out on the table perhaps with all the info we needed (such as the swimming cards, the guest book etc although the biscuits and coffee in the box were nice touch), then it would of made our stay a 10/10.

Great location, decent facilities, comfortable week. Sofa and chair pretty worn and due to be replaced but the price probably reflected this. Overall the property was good value for money. A few of points of improvement noted: - Dishwasher was full on arrival (obviously not good) - Smelt of dog when first arrived. - living area / kitchen floors were very dirty when we arrived.

  • "The sea dog was a beautiful seaside escape."

Furnished to reflect the whole beach theme. Facilities were clean, property could do with a lock of paint but nothing that would have put us off. Toilets were amazing. The use of a cooker, dishwasher and washing machine certainly made life easy. Decking with seating was fabulous for those sunny days. The owner admits to requiring a new sofa, but has added a throw and some decorative cushions. The site itself is somewhat quiet, but the beach kept us busy. The walk to the beach is pretty steep but well worth it when you get there. Used the pizza takeaway service, we were not disappointed. Overall a great staycation. Handy location for visiting Filey and Scarborough where there is lots to do for kids. Having read some of the reviews we were a tad nervous, but there was absolutely no need! Would definitely book the sea dog again.

  • "The property needs a deep clean as there are dust and cobwebs."

The couch is worn and has flaking leather along with the uncomfortable mattresses on the beds. I found sweet wrappers under the bed in the second room and it has a missing shelf in the fridge, missing blind to the door, missing rope on the patio. The walls are all marked and need cleaning. I have staid on this site before in another property the same as this and it was excellent I could not fault it. The site is excellent and I fi intend to return but not to this property.

  • "When we arrived at 3pm as stated on our email from you lounge still dirty, dirty sheets on floor, rubbish bag on floor etc."

We did ring yourselves and the cleaning manager - you got back to us immediately saying you had contacted owner who was going to get things sorted. Cleaners and cleaning company manager called fairly quickly and said they thought we were not arriving till 4pm? We went for a walk and when we got back place cleaned. The manager did tell us that the owner was getting a new settee which was needed and also the ropes on the decking had all broken but he said they were to be mended. Decking needed some TLC. Also lounge needed some TLC too - a coat of paint would be nice. The bathrooms and bedrooms were lovely and clean, lovely fluffy towels and clean bedding etc. Just needs some TLC. I did get an email from yourselves saying that the manager told you we got there early that was the reason they had not finished cleaning. The door was locked when we arrived at 3pm (as stated in your email) so they must have left our cottage to do something else. We were in the cottage at the time stated they had not done there job. We did though have a lovely holiday, lots to see and do.

  • "Dear Sirs The facilities were an absolute disgrace, especially when you consider it cost in excess of £1000 to stay."

The whole place was covered in dust, cob webs and general grime, wifi was non existent and the furniture was in horrendous condition, property was in desperate need of painting as well as a deep clean. Have the owners heard of a thing called COVID 19? Outside decking and furniture needs attention also. The only reason I didn't complain while I was there was due to the fact my wife asked me to not make a fuss as it would spoil our break. As a cleaning business owner for over 20 years I would strongly urge your management to vet the condition of the properties you let and that the property owner spend some of the money they charge to invest in the property urgently. We have stayed at the Bay on 2 other occasions and had no issues but if I am being honest this experience had left me wondering if I should use Sykes again or stay at the Bay. The state of this particular property has insured I would never stay at the Sea Dog again. As I am a repeat customer with Sykes, I would be most keen to get a reply to this email as well as a token gesture from either yourselves or the property owner for my families experience and the obscene overcharge I have incurred. Regards Colin Scullion 07885 088 265

There are some issues, which were rightly raised, many of which I was not aware of, and these will be resolved as quickly as possible. There have been some issues with my cleaning company and I have met the owner to discuss and to agree an action plan to rectify the issues raised and to maintain this standard going forward. Though the recent review questions my financial commitment to resolve the issues, I can assure all future guests that this is not the situation and finance will be provided, where needed, to bring the property back to the previous high standard. I would also add that some of the external issues, i.e., broken ropes on the patio, are the responsibility of The Bay, and these issues were reported to The Bay several weeks ago but the repairs had not been done. I have spoken to The Bay again and they have assured me the repairs will be done as a matter of urgency. Please accept my apologies for the recent issues and I can assure all future guests that the property will be restored and maintained to the high standards expected. John Wherrett Sea Dog Owner. Toilet seat was cracked and it wasnt as clean as it should of been during this time. Scuffed walls and cracks. Towels marked. However this wouldn't stop us booking again as it was a beautifully maintained park and ideally situated.

  • "The lodge had not been deep cleaned."

The pillows and duvets were stained and all the cushions on the bed and sofas were were marked and dirty and needed a wash. It was very dark inside at night, it really needs some main lights in each room, not just lamps. The tea towels needed replacing, they were not very nice. We stayed for 2 weeks and we only given 1 bin liner, 5 dishwashing tablets and 2 toilet rolls. We had to buy all of these. There was no offer of clean towels or bed linen for week 2. Considering how much we payed it was not very good service or value. There were some sachets of tea, coffee and sugar, but no milk on arrival. The bay holiday park is lovely and the beach is easy to access.

  • "We had a problem when we arrived with the boiler - however, after several calls this was quickly resolved."

My main issue was with the cleanliness of the property. Much of the crockery had to be washed before I could use it. There was also dirt on the floor, so I tried to vacuum the property however the vacuum didn't work properly so we had to put up with sweeping the floor which took a couple of hours. There was also a problem with the dishwasher - every time we opened it, it caught on the counter pulling the bottom part of it out. This became frustrating throughout the week. The Wifi was quite poor (although the weather was variable and I appreciate that could have been to blame). The drainage in the wet room (shower and sink) was poor. We were very disappointed. However, the site itself was excellent and we used the swimming pool everyday.

.. needed it as we got muddy etc from dog walking in the rain along the beach... I've had to come home and get all the washing done... that was a massive inconvenience to us... other bits weren't a biggy like lamp needed a bulb, clock needed a battery, bulbs gone in both bathrooms, toilet seat in jack n jill needed fixing properly. Just simple maintenance... washing machine was the major thing.

  • "We loved our little holiday however, the cleanliness failed to meet our expectations."

The cushions had food stains which was obvious that they hadn’t been cleaned. Their was mouldy vegetables left in the accommodation from a previous guest and the listing stated a starter kit for the fire would be there however there was a box of matches which definitely won’t maintain a fire.

  • "Even though we had to cut short our holiday owing to illness we had no complaints about the actual accommodation which was superb."

What we didn't like was the fact that the lodges were so close together, and when we arrived there was no one in the lodges either side so it was lovely and peaceful. Then on the third day a family with three or four young children and a dog moved in next door and it was noisy and chaotic and spoiled things. The advert said there would be fire lighting equipment and enough for the wood-burner to start us off after which we would have to buy our fuel - but when we arrived there was a box of matches and an empty firelighter box - nothing else, which was disappointing. We have enjoyed Sykes cottage holidays for many years, and though Sea Dog was superbly appointed and very comfortable, being on a site with lots of other lodges was the wrong choice. In future we will book an independent cottages as far away from a `holiday village' as possible!

Enjoyed going swimming and to the pub in the evening. The log burner adds a real coziness to the place. The local area was lovely, enjoyed an afternoon tea at a nearby hotel, as well as a day in Whitby which was very pretty. Only improvement would be that the place was freezing when we arrived and took a long time to heat up, I guess because the living room diner is a large space but there was no way of using the fire when we arrived, we had to run out to buy wood, kindling and matches, but also the radiator in the hallway didn’t get very hot compared to others, I think it needs bleeding. As soon as the place warmed up it was wonderful though. Would definitely recommend booking this place.

About the location

FILEY

Scarborough 7.5 miles; Bridlington 11 miles.

Filey is a traditional English seaside resort with a friendly atmosphere, offering a restful holiday, making an ideal place to stay for walkers and wildlife watchers at any time of the year. A real gem on the Yorkshire coast. A fishing town on the North East Coast, Filey has enjoyed a reputation of being a resort since Victorian times, set beside the magnificent Filey Bay, a long stretch of beautiful sand, with Filey Brigg and its shallow rockpools to the north. Filey Brigg is a low headland that protects Filey Bay and provides good bird watching and seawatching opportunities all year round. The 400 ft high Bempton Cliffs (RSPB Reserve) to the south of Filey Bay are home to over 250,000 seabirds in the summer. Gannets, kittiwakes, puffins, guillimots and razorbills all nest there. Gannets are regularly seen diving for fish in Filey Bay. The Brigg area is an ideal place to watch for common and rarer waders, seabirds and migrating warblers, finches and thrushes. As well as seabirds, seals and other marine life, such as porpoises dolphins and minke whales can be seen in the sea around the Brigg. The town itself seems almost caught in a time warp, retaining much of its character with individual shops, narrow paths and ginnels. There is a small coble landing, a slipway where local fishermen keep their boats, plus delightful beach chalets that can be hired through the summer months. The bay is edged with two promenades and there are various gardens, where brass bands play on a Sunday afternoon. This small town is family orientated, crazy golf and candy floss. Also in Filey there is the Filey Dams Nature Reserve, a wetland reserve where common and rare waders and wildfowl can be seen as well as autumn gatherings of swallows, sand martins and house martins. Also there is Parish Wood (just off Sycamore Avenue) an unexpected gem that offers a wealth of wildlife. Willow warbler, chiffchaff, blackcap and tree sparrows breed there and a wide variety of other species are regularly seen such as great spotted woodpeckers and sparrow hawks. Parish Wood also provides shelter and food for a wide range of migrant bird species such as goldcrests, pied and spotted flycatchers, warblers, finches, thrushes and woodcocks. A short drive brings you to the busier town of Scarborough where for family fun you can visit the Alpamare Waterpark, a waterpark unlike anything the UK has ever seen before, as well as plenty to explore and discover in this lovely area.
