  • "This cottage is not very user friendly at all."

There was a lot of issues with the cleanliness. Sykes didn't even want to see the photos I took. I contacted the owner about crumbs all over the work surface I the kitchen and how the bedding was very creased and crumpled. He did offer to change the bedding of which I declined. I was in there by then! The drinking glasses are left out on a shelf, hence they were greasy and dusty. Tge side table in the front room had tea stains all over it. The mat when you come in initially is a piece of white carpet and was filthy. There is no space upstairs, n cupboards to put away any clothes that don't need hanging. You have to keep it all in your bags. There's no ventilation in the bathroom, extractor fan or window ,therefore there is a horrible drain smell all the time. Sykes really need to go and visit this property for safety reasons alone! I complained to Sykes about compensation, they contacted the owners and they informed Sykes that they'd left a bottle of wine!!!! That certainly didn't make up for the cleanliness or the unsafety. I believe this property should be taken off the listings. Avoid at all costs.

The room at the top of the stairs is quite minimum and not much room to get dressed etc. Down stairs is comfy but maybe a cooker instead of hobs and a microwave would be better.

  • "On arrival and first thoughts are what a lovely quirky little barn conversion but thoughts soon turn to despair."

There were no hangers or space to put any clothing so we had to live the week out of suitcases. The covers on the couch were dirty and very dog smells. There was no mattress protector on the bed, no shower mat to step onto. The landing is so small there s no room and in our view unsafe at the top of ladder stairs. With a little thought and effort it could be made more comfortable and accessible.

Hi Sandra, Devastating to read this. When I called in to check everything was okay you seemed delighted with our little cottage. I wish I had known you were struggling- I only live on the other side of the village and I had left you my mobile number. I would have done anything you needed to get your holiday back on track. Well maintained and comfortable. We didn’t want to come home. Great base to explore the area (we did most of the coast). Emily was very welcoming with a gift which was very thoughtful. We would love to go back.

  • "Beautiful little cottage in a very pretty, friendly village with good dog walks locally (especially Revenge Wood!"

) Scarborough's North Bay 5 miles down the road and the Dalby Forest 10 miles up the road. It was a bit dusty in places (lots of beams!) We eventually noticed a small wall-mounted vacuum that appeared to have been stolen or broken and not replaced, which was a shame as we would have used it. The tiny dustpan and brush provided did the job though on the lovely stone flags downstairs. The crockery, cutlery and kitchen utensils were a bit minimal, even for two, and a wooden spoon is essential. Nice set of pans though, I did cook. And a decent-sized fridge-freezer that was spotless. The squishy sofa and throws were a treat. The towels and bedlinen were clean too. The bed was comfortable but only one of you can get changed at a time, there's not much space at all upstairs. The shower room was tiny but clean and everything worked. We'd have liked some cleaning materials for the bathroom rather than just a bit of bleach, in a 4 night stay we would have used them during the week. The warning about the staircase is needed, it is very steep and dangerous for small children. Be careful parking here, it's quite tight if there's someone in The Barn. That sounds a bit negative, we had a lovely time and it's a beautiful little cottage with nice furniture and some thoughtful touches, thank you! If it was warm enough to sit out, there's a lovely private sitting area with stunning views.

Thank you so much Fiona, it was lovely to have you. Property Owner

  • "Such an ideal location for exploring the area."

The hosts were super welcoming and friendly. The property is slightly smaller than we expected but really cosy. There is a need for some high dusting as there was a fair number of cobwebs sitting about that have been there a while. The property could benefit from either an air fryer or a small oven as the hob is slightly restrictive at meal times. There is an electric heater there to top up the heating, but a log burner would be ideal to compliment this property. Would happily stay again though as it was a lovely property.

Thanks Gayle, totally agree it is cosy! We would love a log burner one day. Property Owner

Exceptionally clean and tidy with everything you need at hand . The owners of this property Ed and Emily are the nicest people you could wish to meet and they live on site so if you have any problems (which we did not) they would be easily resolved. Great location for visiting Scarborough , Whitby , Bridlington , Filey and Pickering to name a few . We enjoyed this dog friendly property so much we will be booking again very shortly . Great patio area to chill out on and back inside the property up on the mezzanine floor is the most comfy bed we have slept on . On site parking is an added bonus . Many thanks for a fantastic holiday , best wishes Mark , Angela , Lola and Coco.

The kitchen area is well equipped although I world have like a wall food cupboard. The upstairs area has a welcoming large bed and a delightfully designed modern bathroom. Outside there is a quiet area of garden with table and chairs for that morning coffee. All in all a delightful place to stay.

  • "Although the property and village itself are charming, unfortunately there were a number of faults, which, when raised with the owner directly, were not rectified."

    1. The miniscule fridge was giving off what I can only describe as a very pungent fishy/decaying smell which permeated the barn. 2. The coffee machine did not seem to work, there were no instructions and I had to Google it to see if I could get it to work. The owner said some instructions would be emailed; I did not receive any. 3. The microwave had no instructions so I had to resort to pressing different buttons randomly to try to cook a meal. 4. The bin lid was broken and wouldn't close properly. This added to the bad smell in the barn and also created a problem with flies. 5. There didn't appear to be a welcome gift; it was only upon calling the owner that it transpired a bottle of wine was in a box outside the property! 6. There was no folder of helpful information such as nearest shop or recommendations for pubs. As a single mum with a dog, this would have been helpful instead of having to research on Google. I did contact the owner about the problems with the smell, bin and fridge but I believe no one came when promised as the bin was still broken and hanging open when we came back after a day out. It's a shame these issues let the property down; I hope these problems will be rectified for future guests.

  • "- ve: We thought it was a bit cramped to be honest, the ensuite small and the stairs were very hard to navigate."

There were only 2 pieces of crockery and no comforts such as a throw for the leather sofa. The photos made it look different to reality and the fact that it was really a studio with one mezzanine wasn’t clearly explained, so for that price we wouldn’t stay again. + ve : The garden seating and view was nice. The prosecco was a good touch, perhaps a small bottle of milk and biscuits /scones would have also been very welcome.

Hi Louise, Thank you for your feedback, we were so sorry to read that your stay in The potting shed was anything short of lovely. We have taken your feedback onboard, and agree that the property is small and quirky. For us it’s the high ceilings on a dark night with a glass of wine that make it feel really magical. • "• The what3words location is wrong, use ”grub."

Recount.tried” instead. • Location is amazing, super quiet at night. Clear skies let's you see the stars while in bed (or shut the blind instead). • Be careful bringing dogs that like to follow you up stairs as the ones here are steap and bare wood. A dog might be able to sneak up behind you, but then getting down would be dangerous for them. • Lots of walks nearby on AllTrails, including Dalby Forest which is just a 20 minutes drive. • Shops within 15 minute drive. • Fridge is a little small, so don't go mad on cold foods etc. • Owners are super friendly, and don't go out their way to disturb your visit. Note for the owner: Would maybe consider extending the outdoor festoon lights into the seating/patio areas (granted, we didn't use this area so there could be a light already). I'd also recommend silicon cooking utensils (plastic stains). Overall great place to stay, highly recommended to anyone :)

The property is lovely, clean and cozy, with everything you would need. There was tea, coffee and milk, and even a bottle of wine on the table! The village of Hutton Buscel is so pretty and quiet, with lovey walks nearby. Pubs around a mile away either side of the village. We caught the bus from West Ayton to Scarborough, which took 20mins. The only two things that could have been better, 1, the door lock was very sticky to open, sometimes it opened fine, other times we would have to fiddle for a few mins to get it to unlock. 2, the bed was not the most comfortable, not terrible but just a bit lumpy. Apart from those 2 things, a very nice property in a lovely setting!
