  • "Disappointing stay and unlikely to book again with Sykes."

The cottage was not clean with dust & cobwebs, black mould on the cracked bathroom tiles & cracked, broken and dirty bath side, no hot water from the taps only the shower - also the shower hose broken. I had to boil the kettle to wash the pots. Exposed wiring to a light fitting and the ceiling boards ?filler hanging down. The beds were uncomfortable, albeit the bedding and towels were laundered. The carpets threadbare and ?tears covered with masking tape, you could feel the sharp carpet grippers when using the stairs. Sadly the cottage smelled foisty and damp and the peeling plaster/paint not repaired or the damp in the second floor bedroom cleaned off the wall. I would never normally give a poor review I would just put it down to 'one of those things', but this week I had my grandchildren with me as a seaside treat & they said the same things, my granddaughter giving it a 1 out of 5 as we left on Friday. It's a real shame because the cottage could be a little gem of a place if it was well maintained and spruced up.

  • "What a lovely cottage!"

It's in a perfect location, 2 minutes to the harbour. 2 minutes to the shops, restaurants and pubs, especially the Irish one at the bottom of the hill, great atmosphere. I slept like a log it was so quiet. The cottage has everything you need. My daughter and I loved it! I would have left a review in the book but couldn't find my pen. It would have been a pleasure to write it! Thanks to the owner for answering my questions too-before we arrived. I would definitely go again. x

  • "We enjoyed our stay, interesting old cottage and convenient for everything we wanted to do in Whitby."

Parking no problem and very quiet at night. Small improvements would include repair to damaged wallpaper and a bit more crockery (small plates, dishes, perhaps a milk jug) and a grill pan. Otherwise kitchen very nice, lovely worktop and cooker. Couldn't fathom out the heating and found the boiler rather annoying firing up through the night but it didn't spoil our stay. Overall very comfortable and well thought out so thank you.

  • "A quaint cottage, near to the centre of Whitby."

That ends the positive feedback. Parking a nightmare, allow £9 a day for the car. The parking vouchers supposedly provided, was for 1 voucher for 2 nights only. Attempted to contact the number provided, despite texting, phoning, and leaving a message requesting a call back, no call back was received during the 4 days we were there, or indeed since. The boiler in the bedroom was constantly noisy, and heated up the room to an unpleasant temperature, no thermostat appeared to control it.

  • "We had a wonderful time in the cottage."

Very clean and comfortable. Being centrally located, we were within five minute walk of Whitby's main attractions. Our only nitpick was that the lightswitch for the bathroom pops out of its slot, making it impossible to turn on the bathroom light! Other than that, a great find if you're looking for a relaxing mid-week break.

We was a bit disappointed bathroom light switch was broken and no frying pan or trays to cook anything in oven had to buy a pizza tray and no dishes to put anything in microwave so very unsuitable if you want to self cater

  • "Lovely quirky cottage, we enjoyed our stay here the only issue was the 1 hour unloading, there was no disc left in the property for this and we've ended up with a parking ticket, there was one provided for the rest of the stay so not 100% why the other wasn't provided."

Anyway nice location, clean and tidy kids enjoyed it and our dog loved the treats from the dog bakery next door

  • "We really enjoyed our stay here."

The cottage was charming and immaculately clean. There were excellent facilities and the most comfortable double bed. Stopping the dog from following us up the stairs was a challenge since the bottom landing door could not be fastened from the stairs side. Thank you

  • "A wonderful stay in a really beautiful old cottage."

We loved the fireplace and all the period features. It was very cosy for us as a couple on our “mini-moon”. It would be good for a small family too. The location was excellent and it was very tidy and clean. The bed was very comfortable and we will definitely use Sykes Cottages again and recommend it to other people. Thanks, Jackie.

The cottage was a little squashed for 4 of us especially downstairs. Neither Sky (no card) and wifi worked periodically. Suggestion, the entertainment & microwave electrics get an update.

  • "My first long stay in whitby and this property was a great little hub for the week."

On arrival we literally parked outside and used the 1hr permit provided to unload our vehicle. Additional long stay permits were provided too but parking in those were tricky. A bit of patience, waiting and circling around usually provided a place when someone left. However there is plenty of free parking available before entering the main permit zones which are a 5mins walk from the accommodation. Other reviews mention the sofas but they are now updated the broadband was high speed and perfect throughout. This property is small and compact which can be a plus or negative based on the visitors own tastes. We liked it alot. Pros : Great location Some parking permits provided Off the main street so added privacy High speed broadband Cozy Clean Dog friendly Cons : Small Little kitchen space Tight steep stairs, potentially problematic for certain people. Overall we found this place good value for money, it was clean, cozy and well located. The doggy shop is literally outside. Parking in whitby as a whole is difficult and not the fault of the property and we were provided with permits for our stay. If we come to whitby again we would actually consider this property again.

  • "Limited cutlery, lack of pans / oven trays and grill."

No wood, kindling for fire. Only one window would open rest painted shut. Seating at end of life, uncomfortable.

Thank you for you comments regarding your stay at Tyreman's Return, we are sorry to hear that you found the property uncomfortable this has not been mentioned to us previously. The small kitchen at Tyreman's Retreat does prevent us having lots of different pots and pans, however, we have added more cutlery. Although we have the fire at the property, we do not provide any wood or kindling, this can be bought from the local shop. We hope you were still able to enjoy your stay in our property. A down side is the difficult parking situation but that is general to Whitby and not unique to Tyremans Return. The narrow steep stairs would not be suitable for anyone with limited mobility. The Little angel pub which is only 50 yards from th cottage is great for a pint of real ale.

The cottage was clean, comfortable, superbly equipped and full of character, perfectly situated for everything we could possibly need and provided an ideal base. We found loads of things to do and fabulous places to eat during our stay. The property

Tyreman’s Return, 2 Abbey Inn Yard is a characterful Grade II listed 2 bedroom cottage steeped in history.

This traditional fisherman’s cottage dating from around 1760 is off ancient Flowergate, known as Floresgate in the Doomsday Book.

This quirky cottage offers contemporary living sleeping up to 4 people in a 3 storey property.

It is located in a convenient and quiet yard situated off Flowergate on the west side of Whitby.

There is a double bedroom on the first floor with a twin bedroom on the second floor.

The wrought-iron gate at the entrance to the yard is located next to the Yorkshire Building Society (formerly an old Inn known initially as The Old Abby Inn which existed from at least 1794).

Tyreman’s retains some lovely period features - the original beams, a working open Yorkshire Range ideal for those winter nights, sash windows and a coffin drop in the ground floor ceiling.

You enter Tyreman’s up two shallow steps into an open-plan living space.

Here there are two comfortable sofas in the lounge space, a flat screen TV with a DVD player and a mini sound system.

The focal point for the family is the open hearth fireplace.

A selection of paperbacks and DVD’s are provided.

The compact kitchen provides all modern appliances: an electric oven, microwave, fridge and an electric hob set in black granite.

In the dining area is a kitchen table with two settles seating 4 people.

Heating is gas central heating with radiators throughout.

One well-behaved dog is allowed to stay in the downstairs room but must not be allowed upstairs.

Through the door to a narrow and curved staircase leads to the first floor.

Here there is the charming double bedroom and a family bathroom.

The second floor has a spacious twin bedroom along the length of the house, this delightful room also has a TV and DVD player available.

The magnificent cruck beams do reduce headspace at the sides of the room, but the apex does provide standing room.

A stairgate is fitted should this be required.

The location of Tyreman’s Return is ideal for visiting the many and varied attractions that Whitby offers.

You can park outside Abbey Inn Yard for 1 hour using a parking disc for unloading.

Thereafter parking is available at St Hilda’s Terrace car park which is 5 minutes walk from the cottage, or Cliff Terrace or on West Cliff.

All are pay and display (free from November to March).

Just up from the cottage on Flowergate are two Parks – Little Park where dogs are permitted and Pannett Park housing a Local History Museum.

There are a variety of restaurants and cafes on Flowergate (and even a dog bakery!).

The quayside and swing bridge are at the foot of Flowergate where you meet the heart of Whitby and your adventure continues.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.
