“Unfortunately we thought the cottage would be slightly better, particularly for the money.”

The photos don't accurately represent the size of the house and a floor plan would have been useful. The kitchen area was cluttered with a kettle, toaster and redundant, large coffee machine sitting infront of a microwave which we couldn't easily open because everything else was sitting in front of it. The electric style woodburner was noisey when we turned it on. The place is advertised for up to 5 people but there are only 4 chairs to sit on at the table. Also its difficult to fit 5 people on the fairly uncomfortable sofas in the sitting area off the kitchen. The double bedroom had limited storage and would benefit from some hooks on the door/ under the stairs. It would also have been useful to have a bin in the bedroom. The loose carpets in the bedroom were dirty. The kitchen would benefit from having a pair of kitchen scissors. The goody bag of tea, coffee, and cake was much appreciated and a great touch. The lady I spoke to at Sykes cottage in the week about the telly not working was very good and followed up on getting things sorted out.

The property

Immaculate cottage with harbour views and lovely outside space in historic Whitby. This superb property has been lovingly refurbished and decorated to provide quality accommodation for families and couples seeking a coastal getaway. Located on the east side of town, just off Church Street, near the harbour, Sunshine Cottage is within easy walking distance of Whitby’s beautiful ‘old town’.

A pleasant harbour-side stroll takes you directly to the historic centre and beach where you can feel the sand between your toes in no time. This lovely cottage sleeps 4 people.

To the ground floor you’ll find a reception room with TV and sofa bed to create space for an additional person.

This room leads to a delightful terraced garden. Meanwhile, the ground floor offers a luxury open plan living area with contemporary kitchen, dining area and sitting area – all in a tasteful, coastal-inspired palette of blues, creams and soft pebble greys.

Take it easy on the comfortable seating and enjoy the harbour views as you unwind and plan what to see next in beautiful Whitby.

The wood burning stove-style electric fire is so cosy after a bracing coastal walk. The stylish house ground floor shower room has a real boutique hotel feel to it and includes a good size shower, basin and WC. Moving upstairs, the bedrooms offer superb harbour views.

To the first floor is a double with brass bed and varnished wooden flooring – so characterful.

Tucked away in the eaves on the second floor is a charming exposed timber-beamed twin – perfect for a spot of star-gazing on a clear night! To the outside is an enclosed lawned garden to one side plus a two-tier terraced garden with views over Whitby marina.

Sit and enjoy a pot of tea (Yorkshire, of course!), watch the boats and listen to the seagulls wheeling.

BBQ included.

Whitby is a gastronomic town, well-known for its fantastic fish and chips and award-winning restaurants.

There’s a lively atmosphere along the waterfront as you head towards the beach - a great place for people-watching.

To learn more about the history of Whitby head for the Captain Cook Memorial Museum or Whitby Museum.

If you’re feeling brave, try The Dracula Experience for a hair-raising insight into the Whitby that inspired Bram Stoker’s gothic masterpiece. With stunning walks along the heritage coast, miles of sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages and traditional seaside fun – there really is something for everyone to enjoy. A stay at Sunshine Cottage is a great choice – like many guests, you may wish to return to fully appreciate this beautiful part of Yorkshire.
