  • "Attracted by its remoteness, we were not disappointed."

Close enough to Alnwick, Lindesfarne and Bamburgh, our 6 night stay was wonderful. The cottage was cosy, suited all our needs and was perfect. Lucky with the weather, but the cottage had a log burner to take away any evening chills (the owners kindly lit it for us prior to our arrival which was most welcoming!). A lovely aspect from all windows, surrounded by nature and calmness, a most re-energizing break from the daily drudge. Our first Northumberian holiday was amazing.

  • "The owners were very friendly and welcoming, checked we had everything we needed and provided plenty of fuel for the log burner which made the cottage very warm and cosy."

The beds were comfortable with clean fresh linen and the rooms had plenty of storage. Lots of fresh towels and everything you needed in the kitchen. Would definitely stay again.

It's a pity the storage heaters were not turned on prior to arrival especially when we arrived a day later than booked. By day 3 the house was cosy .

  • "Great location and obviously has been a fantastic cottage in the past but sadly several aspects need attention."

There are many, many positives including the pristine kitchen and modern appliances. Pans, crockery etc are spotless; there are new rugs and bedding/towels are excellent quality. Welcome pack was lovely. Unfortunately the pictures on Sykes are outdated and reflect a newly renovated property. The reality is garden furniture that is mouldy and needs scraping, painting and generally cleaning to be useable. The decking needs jet washing and de- moulding, the rails need scraping and cleaning. All general maintenance that would make a big difference. The shower control is broken and needs a new control button. These are simple fixes but as the complex is currently for sale it just seems that standards have lapsed pre sale. The biggest issue for us that impacted negatively on our stay was the lack of warmth in the cottage. It is an old building but the storage/ radiator heating system is very inefficient as is the log burner. I’m sure this isn’t an issue in the warmer months but we could not get the cottage warm and the bedroom was like an ice box and thoroughly unpleasant to be in. There are a couple of throws in the lounge but it’s not my idea of a holiday to have to wrap up in a blanket to cope with the cold in the lounge. The wifi is not as advertised and is so slow to be virtually useless. The smart tv is dated with distorted picture quality and needs replacing. The unadopted private drive is very bumpy but you are warned in advance, however the massive dip/pothole half way down is quite frightening when it floods in heavy rain. Despite the faults we did have a nice holiday overall but it is not a property that we would wish to return to in it’s current state.

  • "Due to a cancellation the owners of Rock Mill generously offered us an upgrade so our review is based on Newton Retreat."

The house was very well equipped clean and comfortable and Jeremy the owner helpful and friendly, in a lovely position with views over the fields where we saw hares and deer. Sykes however had not informed the hosts that were arriving a day late even though I had been assured when booking they would do and I even sent a reminder email; no reply. The hosts were concerned and messaged me to see if we were alright.

Lovely welcome and pack from owner Jeremy upon arrival. Extremely attentive and encouraged us to enquire about anything. Great location for exploring this beautiful part of England and the world. The cottage was well appointed and comfortable and a great base to explore the beautiful countryside. Low Newton by the Sea has a beautiful beach and is only a five minute drive away. The bed in the master bedroom isn’t ideal for anyone over about 5ft 8 though due to the style of bed - it has a foot board at the bottom - that’s the only thing I would change.

I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay here at Rock Mill and I'm really sorry that our standard double sleigh bed proved to be a bit of a squeeze for you. Property Owner

Wood for the stove was also appreciated. Only complaint - bed was a little uncomfortable particularly for me as I am 6ft 2in tall and my feet were against the base board.

I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay here at rock Mill and I'm so sorry our standard double sleigh bed meant your poor feet were right next to the footboard! Property Owner

About the location

EMBLETON

Craster 3 miles; Beadnell 4 miles; Alnwick 7 miles.

The pretty village of Embleton is ideally placed for exploring one of the most attractive stretches of Northumberland's Heritage Coastline. A beautiful grassy path runs from the village to neighbouring Craster, alongside the sea and past Dunstanburgh Castle - the largest ruined castle in Northumberland. Embleton itself has a village pub and a local hotel, and there is an excellent range of amenities in nearby Alnwick. The gardens at nearby Howick Hall are open during the summer and are noted for their beauty, whilst Alnwick Castle and Garden are a 'must-see' when visiting the area.
