TUXFORD

Retford 7.3 miles; Newark-on-Trent 14 miles; Lincoln 17.5 miles.

Tuxford is an old coaching town found in the north of Nottinghamshire, situated between the bustling towns of Newark and Retford. The quaint village was once a hub for travellers and boasted four railway stations, with the St Nicholas Church being the oldest building the town, dating back to the 12th century. Today, it is a great destination for tourists due to its variety of independent shops and attractions. Some of the highlights include a large, working windmill which is open to visitors daily, the Walks of Life handcart museum, which chronicles the history of the town on wheels and the Sally Mitchell Art Gallery and which is set in a wonderful 18th century Posting Inn. As well as the fine art gallery, which has ongoing exhibitions of sporting equestrian and canine art from internationally renowned artists, the Heritage award-winning museum is packed with unusual equestrian items spanning from 600 BC to the 20th Century. The popular Sherwood Forest and City of Lincoln are both easily accessible, proving to be an excellent base for holidaymakers and adventure seekers.
