  • "I managed to do the unthinkable, and lost all of the house keys to this lovely property within 24 hous of arriving!"

The kindhearted lady who oversees the cottage, Tina, was outstanding in trusting me with the originals for a couple of days so I could get spares cut, and with putting me at ease over my error. The cottage itself is delightful, very cosy and warm, and has everything you could need to make time there as relaxing as possible. The garden is both pretty, practical, and totally secure for canine companions. It's in such a lovely location, with lovely canal walks, and a well maintained public right of way across fields, just behind the house. The pub is lovely, with a decked area overlooking the canal, and is very dog friendly. I didn't use the restaurant, but it has great reviews. Some great takeaway food is available locally, and in Quorn, which is literally a 7/8 minute drive away. I highly recommend this cottage destination as a lovely place to unwind and relax, and to do as much, or as little, as you want. Overseen by the lovely Tina, who was so welcoming, friendly and kind, it's a lovely place to stay, and somewhere I would love to go back to again.

Only drawbacks were very steep stairs and not very good parking due to limited space and farm access ( which was never used when we were there). Nice kitchen, needed a little more crockery as having only 4 dinner plates made the dishwasher pretty superfluous

This cottage is an absolute gem and has everything you need and more. It's taken care of by Tina and she does a fantastic job. The little surprises on arrival were so nice and the milk in the fridge very welcome to make a cuppa after a long drive. Dexter, our pooch, was also very happy with his biscuits and ball. The area is just beautiful and just the perfect getaway, you don't actually need to go anywhere else! Our occupation is as Hotel Managers and cannot fault the upkeep of this property. So nice to have all the extra bits already here like teabags, sugar, salt, pepper, bath salts, moisturiser and the like. Dog friendly too, which is fantastic. We hope to be back, thankyou Tina!!

The little kitchen is modern and very well equipped - even having a slow-cooker which we made good use of. Because of the recent incessant rain, some of the local walks were flooded and inaccessible. Everything was fine on our arrival apart from there were no bin bags, I had to purchase my own, and the dishwasher had no cutlery basket! Everything went smoothly until Monday evening, I filled the dishwasher, put it on and we sat and watched the tv. The dishwasher was running through its cycle when suddenly all the electricity went off, I checked outside to see if anyone else had the same problem but their lights were on. I called the housekeeper at 10.30 and she arrived 45 minutes later. She switched off the fuse for the dishwasher and the electricity came back on. She said she couldn’t do anything tonight but would get an electrician to fix it and could we manage with what we had until then, I said yes, expecting something to be sorted the following day, she said she would contact me. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday came and went with no contact or any sign of a resolution. During this time we managed with two mugs, no tumblers, one saucepan and a wok, luckily there were sufficient bowls, plates and cutlery. We were out Friday morning and received a phone call to say the electrician would be coming during the afternoon. When we returned they were just leaving, although the dishwasher couldn’t be repaired as it needed a new part. But hey ho we had the items from the dishwasher at last, the day before our departure! I have never in all the years I’ve used Sykes had to leave a review that wasn’t positive. Our experience would have been so much better had we been communicated with. I know things break down and understand that it is frustrating for both the owners and the people hiring the property, but we were left wondering what was happening and managing with what we had. Needless to say I will probably not be returning.

Just an idea but might be easier without the end corner fence panel. Small bath slightly deep if you have mobility issues. Good shower over might be better with just shower tray rather than the bath. • "A lovely cottage, with well laid out accommodation given its size, suitable for up to 3 people, in a quiet, almost canalside position."

Parking at the rear of the cottage was tight but a real bonus, particularly with the location of the cottage. The very secure, private and well maintained small garden was excellent for young children and dogs. Close proximity to a nice pub and local shops was very useful. We would sugggest the inclusion of a pair of kitchen scissors, a cafetiere, (so don't have to use the coffee machine for just one cup), and fire lighters in addition to matches, to start the wood burning stove. Next time the cottage is decorated we would recommend that old rawl plugs are fully removed, and the gaps around the plug sockets and light switches are properly filled, in addition to the old drill holes, (where there have been shelves/pictures previously). Less ornaments/pictures on the kitchen shelves would provide more space for visitors' own provisions, given the compact galley kitchen. The sofa and armchair now look worn and we recommend these are replaced. These simple improvements and additions would provide an even better impression and visitor experience. Attention to detail is always important, and there has clearly been careful thought in the presentation and quality amenities of this delightful cottage. We would be happy to stay at Periwinkle Cottage again.

Thank you very much Ian for your suggestions. We will be visiting the cottage in a couple of weeks and plan on replacing the sofa and armchair with new ones and will be taking into consideration all of your other suggestions to update the cottage and improve its quality and appearance. Cheers! Property Owner

  • "This is a charming period property in a lovely location right next to the river soar and the Soar canal/navigation."

Charnwood is a beautiful area with chocolate-box villages and magnificent ancient oak woodlands. The lounge and kitchen are small but comfortable. The WiFi and smart TV are excellent. There was no empty space in any of the kitchen cupboards to put away our food, and, as we were self catering for a week this was an issue. I moved the plants and Knick-knacks off the kitchen wall shelves to the window so that we were able to put our supplies on the shelves. The master bedroom is beautiful and very comfortable. The second bedroom is very small with no storage, but that said, it has a large and very comfortable single bed (which I slept in). There is room for a small side table by the bed and the addition of this would (plus a bedside reading light would make that little room more comfortable). There was room to hang my clothes in the open plan wardrobe in the master. I took the dressing table stool from the master and put the tray from the lounge on it ( to prevent spills) and used it for my book and morning cuppa. The under floor heating is not working but the oil filled radiators kept us very cosy (and we had some morning frosts and overnight lows of 0 degrees). The upstairs radiators were all working and it was toasty warm. The bath is small but definitely adequate. I had a lovely soak every morning. My husband used the shower and said that the water pressure was great. We had some cleanliness issues on arrival (dog hair). The hoover was light and easy to use. The owner was supportive and offered a price reduction (which we declined because the cottage is really fab in all other respects). The owner is going to speak to the cleaning company to ensure that everything is spic and span in the future. The owner is really lovely and helpful. She emailed us on arrival day with lots of helpful information and responded to our queries in a kind and thoughtful way. We would definitely stay at Periwinkle Cottage again. It’s pluses massively outweigh the few minor issues.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We are visiting the cottage in a couple of weeks and plan on using your suggestions to improve the experience for guests in the future. :) Property Owner

Black mould around ‘bath’ which looked quite unpleasant. Bath very small- more a deep shower tray. Underfloor heating ineffective and had to use three of the four electric heaters provided. No dishwasher tablets or washing pods available as stated by owner. Car space very tight and suitable for a small car only. Pendant light very close to shower ?? Safety. Nevertheless we enjoyed our stay and a beer at the pub despite the large number of dogs frequenting it.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We are installing new radiators in the living room and kitchen to improve the heating in the cottage. • "There was no toilet paper at the cottage."

The parking area was difficult to get into. There were a number of items which were dirty or wet in the kitchen and you could only access plates by removing heavy items first from a bottom shelf. everything was also muddled up in the cupboards in the kitchen. Coffee machine is filthy. The house was freezing cold. there is no point in changing the temperature on heating controls when the clock is not set for heating to be working. The starter pack for the woodburner was not enough to heat the house on the first night nor one bag of logs from the co-op, 2nd night. We only stayed two out of the three nights we payed for as did not want another evening and following morning not being warm enough. The two oil filled radiators were too small too give out enough heat. There were no bin liners. The cottage itself was in a lovely spot, some care and attention would make all of the difference. No one wants to stay in a cold and partly dirty house.

I really appreciate your honest feedback, and I am mortified that you had such a terrible experience at the cottage! I can assure you that I am following up with my housekeeper to ensure that the issues you experienced never happen again. There is no excuse for there not to be toilet paper or bin liners on the property, and everything in the kitchen should be clean. I don't know why the heating controls were not working properly, and I am making sure in the future this is always checked before every new guest arrives. I can only apologize, and I hope the refund I offered helps to mitigate some of the inconvenience and disappointment. Sarah Property Owner

It's a little gem of a place with a very secure back garden for dogs and good dog walks from the door. We used it as a base for visiting family and friends in Leicestershire, but there are also many visitor attractions nearby. As someone has already said, the single bedroom is maybe only suitable for a child, with nowhere to store things, but the cottage has everything you need for two adults. The CoOp in Barrow was handy for food, and extra logs for the log burner which kept us cosy in the cold evenings. The Navigation Inn just over the canal bridge was very friendly and handy for food, we didn't get to visit any other eating places. The owner's email before your stay is very informative regarding TV, WiFi, parking, etc. Parking is actually a bit of a squeeze, as you have to leave the drive clear for access to the farm at the back, but we managed OK with our Octavia estate. Just a couple of little niggles, it would be useful to have a folder with all the usual information regarding instruction booklets for appliances in one place, what can go in the recycling bins, etc. Also, a shelf inside the fridge door was broken, which I informed the owner about so hopefully this has been rectified. Apart from that this cottage is perfect.
