  • "A lovely lodge in a lovely setting!"

    The lodge has everything you could need. The walk down to and around the lake is a delight. My dog Mabel loved it! It was a short drive/taxi ride into Ashby for a selection of places to eat and drink. I would happily recommend Zamani's, lovely food, great atmosphere! All highly recommended. (ps didn't use the hot tub as it was a frosty weekend!)

  • "Spindle is just one of the amazing lodges in this location."

    The surroundings are beautiful, peaceful and well kept. And the lodge itself (we've stayed in Oak at the same location too) has everything you need and more. Evenings in the hot tub are the icing on the cake. The owner and his team are on hand but not intrusive and if you're lucky, you'll even get a visit from their dog who is simply divine.

    One of the cleanest lodges we've stayed in and loved the view, the welcome pack, and the comfortable furnishings. The fairy lights and landscaping were lovely to look at too! A great base for exploring Calke Abbey too.

Head out to the covered veranda and enjoy a dip in the hot tub, taking in the tranquil surroundings as you ponder on the day's adventures.

As the day comes to a close, freshen up in the en-suite shower room before finding the double bed to catch up on your sleep.

DONISTHORPE

Swadlincote 4.1 miles; Burton upon Trent 9.6 miles.

The ancient village of Donisthorpe lies on the Derbyshire/Leicestershire border and just a short drive from the picturesque Derbyshire Dales. This former mining village has a thriving village pub, one of the oldest buildings in the village, a Post Office and shop and is ideally located in the heart of the National Forest close to many chocolate box villages and interesting towns. Nearby Burton upon Trent is a town straddling the River Trent, made famous by its breweries, and home of many award-winning ales. Alabaster carving, cloth working and manning the cotton mills are all central to the town’s history. The small market town of Market Bosworth is just a short drive away, home to the Battle of Bosworth, with an excellent visitor centre at the battlefield site. It has many amenities, including small independent shops, pubs and a renowned fish and chip shop, all located around the market square. There are many historic sites and places of interest such as Tutbury Castle, the Old Marina, the Bass Brewery Centre and the Claymills Pumping Station. A good touring base with Twycross Zoo, Drayton Manor, Alton Towers, Belper, Matlock and Ashbourne within an easy reach, as well as Calke Abbey and the cathedral city of Lichfield.
