Shepherds Retreat

It was a lovely place very rural what we like , postcode take you past property , I know they give info to help but pitcher on your website is not the view you see when you drive past it,owner did pop in to see if okay at the beginning of the week, but we only had one toilet roll last week is a good job we take a spa because I messaged owner towards the end of the week to ask if they could drop us another one but we never got no reply nor a toilet roll which was a bit disappointing but overall cottage was excellent.

Excellent location; met all our needs.

There was everything you need for a comfortable, cosy, relaxing, peaceful stay and excellent location for walks on Tissington Trail and River Dove from the door.

Dovedale nearby was picturesque but seems to get very crowded these days. Further afield, Manifold Way from Hume End is also lovely for walks. The host Alison is very friendly and provided a generous welcome goodies including fresh eggs! Will definitely return in the near future.

A perfect cottage for 2, everything you need for eating in.

Lovely host. Outstanding veiws, perfect for exploring the peaks. Right near the Tissington Trial for cyclists and walkers. Visit the local village of Hartington.

This was the second time of visiting this beautiful and peaceful cottage.

It was easy access for someone with mobility issues. Perfectly situated for walking the Tissington Trail and to visit other places of interest, for example the cheese shop and cafe in Hartington. Extremely friendly owner who made us feel very welcome. A lovely place to relax and take in the surrounding countryside, with it's own enclosed courtyard.

My husband and I were really impressed with the property in every aspect from comfort to cleanliness as well as location in beautiful remote surroundings.

Normally in other holiday properties we have stayed in, we have found, and suggested to the owner, things that would have been useful during our stay, but on this occasion they had thought of everything. There’s also no excuse for not keeping it clean as all the essential ‘tools’ /cleaning products are available. We took our electric bikes as the Tissington Trail is only a short distance from the property and there is a secure shed in the back garden to keep them in when not in use. It was particularly nice that Alison popped in during our stay to check that we were happy with everything and to introduce herself.

The accommodation was excellent and very comfortable.

It certainly had all that we needed. However we were a little disappointed as from the listing we had expected there to be views from the cottage. Apart from the side door the only view was of the paved yard surrounded by walls and trees. The other small issue was the lack of cleaning equipment which we eventually found in the shed. This was not mentioned in the information in the cottage. Despite these things we may consider booking another stay as it was otherwise so good.

This is our second stay here as it really is the best accommodation we have ever stayed in.

It is comfy and cosy and spotlessly clean. Parking right outside and the Tissington trsil right on your doorstep- cannot recommend this cottage enough - it is fabulous

That should tell you how very delighted we have always been. It’s fabulous place in a beautiful setting, close to some excellent walks. The cottage is always spotless, warm, well equipped and the owners are extremely hospitable.

This was our second visit to Shepherds Retreat ,and it lived up to our memory of it.

The cottage is warm and cosy with all the required amenities.The views from the windows are lovely. This is a very relaxing break away..Just what is needed to recoup and recharge , whateveryou choose to do. The welcome pack of chocolates ,and milk in the fridge was a nice touch. We meet Alison the owner again , and was pleased she remembered us! We think this will be a a regular bolt hole for us . In short we loved our time here.

This was the second property that we stayed in belonging to the owner and like the first it did not disappoint in any respect.

We've stayed in many holiday properties and this is one of the best. If you're looking for a warm cosy property that is well equipped, exceptionally clean and in an ideal location within the Peak District then look no further. In fact we have already booked a return visit to this property next year.

Having visited last year we had to come back to Shepherds Retreat again.

We were rewarded with a thoroughly enjoyable stay once more. The cottage is very clean and comfortable and ideal for us. It is set in beautiful countryside and is a good base to explore this area and further afield. We love having walks from the doorstep leading to the River Dove. We will certainly visit again.

A retreat in every sense of the word, solitude if needed, great walking area, comfort in Shepherds.

The cottage is everything you Could wish for.

The property is maintained to a high standard.

It has everything for a comfortable stay except one thing and that is the bed. Anyone who is over 6ft tall like my husband, will find the bed too small. However, we still very much enjoyed our week and would recommend it to others.

It was our 4th time in the Shepherds Retreat.

That, in itself, is the review you are looking for. Already looking to book for another year.

Wonderful stay, only slight criticism is that you cannot access the property till after 3pm on day of arrival, lost a day of the holiday, if the property could be ready earlier it would be perfect!

Use sykes cottages alot and this is always a bug bare. But couldn't fault the property, quality furniture and enjoyable stay, also my partner met the owner, they could have chatted for hours, nice man.

It is exactly as listed. Very clean and comfortable. Also very warm and cosy. We stayed over Christmas for a peaceful getaway. It's in a good location for walking. The surroundings are beautiful, with plenty of wildlife. Alison, the host, is very friendly and welcoming. Altogether an enjoyable stay.

We've had a wonderful stay at Shepherds Retreat the property was immaculate incredibly comfortable and relaxing with exquisite views.

We loved all the sheep in the fields and dry stone walls. On arrival we were greeted by by a lovely warm and cozy lounge which was beautifully decorated for Christmas a lovely sight after a arduous journey up from Suffolk during Storm Darragh. We've enjoyed some excellent food and have met some very kind and friendly people. Thank you Alison for making our stay one to remember.

A fabulous cottage that was very well equipped and maintained to a high standard.

We enjoyed walks and bike rides from the door and the secure bike storage was an excellent additional feature for us. We hope to return to Shepherds Retreat in the future and will recommend it to friends.

Lovely, well maintained cottage.

Fully equipped and exceptionally clean. The underfloor heating was an added bonus. Ideally situated for walks directly from the cottage and just a short drive to Ashbourne, Bakewell, Buxton, Matlock and nearby picturesque villages. We can highly recommend this cottage, one of the best we have stayed in over the years.

Shepherd's Retreat is a delightful place to stay because of its clean and comfortable facilities.

Its in an excellent setting so close to many of the beautiful Derbyshire hills and dales. Alison is a friendly and helpful host who is happy to chat about their farm life, and the local walks and eating places. We have stayed in Owl Barn and Hay Barn with our family but Shepherd's Retreat was perfect for just the two of us.

A very cozy and warm cottage under floor heating a bonus ideally situated in the countryside but to far away from towns and villages.

We had a really wonderful week staying at Shepherds Retreat.

It is a comfortable and cosy place to stay. We loved having walks right from our front door, especially the walk down to the river Dove and beyond which we did a few times. We loved the nearby village of Hartington and again we enjoyed the walk through Beresford Dale. It was so peaceful and tranquil. We enjoyed this holiday so much that we have already booked to come back again!

The shower is fantastic the bed is so comfortable. WiFi really good. It's the perfect location for getting out and about we went to the opera house in Buxton to see a show and had pizza at the Bull and thorn along the way, we can highly recommend. Quite small but very comfortable.

Follow directions carefully or you'll overshoot and end up on the farm. Brilliant access to Tissington Trail & Dovedale.

Everything was ok the main problem we had was the back door was sticking and very difficult to open.

The other thing was the setee was uncomfortable. Shower was excellent, kitchen was ok only room for one person in at a time . Was excellent position for all rides and walks . The bed would be better kingsize. Overall an excellent Holiday was had and an excellent place to stay .

Excellent cottage set in beautiful and easy accessible walking country, Derbyshire can be easily overlooked except for some of us who have walked in the hills there for decades.

Recommend Shepherds Retreat as a clean, comfortable, warm, visually great, stay surrounded with beautiful scenery which is easily accessible. Rachel the owner is very helpful as well.

The cottage was extremely clean and well maintained.

It was equipped with everything we needed for our holiday (not a grumble or a problem but maybe a dish washer would be preferable to a washing machine). The cottage is very cosy, it was wonderful to come back to a warm hug after a day enjoying the countryside in a somewhat 'damp Derbyshire'. Unfortunately, because of the weather, we were unable to take advantage of the outdoor furniture but it looked very inviting and the enclosed garden meant it was also very private. Our second visit and it won't be our last.

A lovely property.

Extremely well placed for cycling...the Tissington Trail is visible from the house. Although we had terrible weather for our cycling and walking we have lovely memories, thanks to returning to the wood burner and the comfort of the property.

Really nice warm homely cottage.

Everything you could need in the kitchen to make a meal is there. This is a walkers paradise, there are a number of walks from the doorstep. Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us but we still managed to walk 50 miles in the week. Good job we took our wellies! Would highly recommend.

Beautifully clean with some welcome festive touches and treats. Great walks from the doorstep… we walked down to the river and into Hartington then came back through Biggin and picked up the Tissington Trail back to the cottage…9.5 miles. We also turned the other way at the river, through Milldale to Dove Holes then to Alsop Station to pick up the Tissington Trail back to the cottage. Close to a bus stop….great for catching the bus to the Waterloo Inn in Biggin where we enjoyed a delicious meal. Also great food at the Sycamore Inn. We would love to have a second visit. Thank you.

This is our second holiday at Shepherds Retread and all was as lovely as our first visit nearly a year ago.

We would have no hestitation in booking again when circumstances allow.

We have now visited this cottage four times and that should tell you how happy we are with it.

The owners are attentive, the cottage is wonderful and the location is perfect if you want somewhere quiet, remote and with lots of great walking right on your doorstep - great pubs too.

It was spotless with everything you need for a super stay. Lovely touch of a bowl of fresh eggs and a small bottle of milk. Beautiful walks from the door, and fantastic views with wonderful sunsets. The owners were helpful and friendly and we were told to ring them if there was a problem. We are hoping to return to this lovely spot.

....stunning location with everything we required for another brilliant holiday. We loved coming in to our warm and welcoming cottage and being able to cook our dinner and relax forthe evening. The cows opposite were always looking out for us and expected us to make a fuss of them....we will be back to the glorious Peak District for sure.

This is a beautiful cosy cottage offering exactly what it advertises & extra touches too in a perfect location.

We loved it ,thank you . If we were to be a bit picky the bedroom door catches on the beautiful floor tiles making it noisey,bathroom door hinges need oiling & the bathroom sink waste doesn't easily open fully to drain the water. Finally a 2nd toilet roll would have been nice, but thankfully we took our own

The area was amazing, beautiful countryside. Lots of young animals around the property which was lovely. Definitely would return.

Everything was just as good as the first time. The cottage is so comfortable and welcoming. The whole layout is spacious and the underfloor heating is wonderful. It was lovely to meet Alison and talk to her about the farm - particularly the lambs! There is so much to do in the surrounding area - beautiful walks, spectacular views and interesting places to visit. Check the drawer under the tv for lots of local information. We will very likely return.

I would like to thank the owners of the property for a very beautiful and comfortable stay.

We arrived and the cottage was just like in the pictures, in fact it was better than the pictures, it felt almost homely, the pictures did not do it justice, the high ceilings and the wooden beams were a beautiful feature. The kitchen was fully kitted out to our needs, and there was even things like washing up liquid and washing machine tablets. The underfloor heating was bliss in the mornings on the tiles, the view was spectacular, especially looking over the sheep and lambs in the surrounding field spaces, the bathroom was beautiful and very spacious, as well as the bedroom being as pictured too. We were thankful for the welcome book, it was very helpful for things within the cottage and also contact numbers for any questions we may of had. We loved the outside courtyard area, and the outdoor seating. We had such an amazing time here, and we would definitely recommend Shepherds Retreat to anybody that is looking to visit the Peak District and stay here, and we would 100% return in a heartbeat. Again, thank you for your hospitality, and thank you for sharing your beautiful cottage with us!

Spotlessly clean, extremely comfortable and an excellent location so close to the exceptional walking in and around Dovedale.

A beautiful, cosy, well equipped and clean cottage.

The cottage was in a peaceful spot but close enough to a main road giving access to many places to explore. Tissinton Trail and two beautiful Derbyshire Dale's were in walking distance of the front door. When the weather became unseasonably warm the owner went to the trouble of getting out the garden furniture so we could enjoy the sunshine and the views in the enclosed sheltered garden

We really enjoyed our week's stay in such a lovely and well appointed property in a delightful setting.

It's an excellent base for local walks and trips to nearby market towns. Although the weather was cold, the underfloor heating made it so cosy we didn't even need to use the log burner. We'd had to cancel an earlier booking due to illness but were so glad we'd rebooked. It was kind of Alison to take the time to check in with us when lambing was in full swing and the welcoming bottle of wine was appreciated too!

Shepherds Retreat is a very cosy, comfortable and well positioned holiday home.

Warm and cozy, particularly as the weather took a definite downturn. Even though the power went down, we had a wood burner to keep us warm and our hosts kept us supplied with wood. Alison also made sure we were ok. Will definitely go back.

Only personal comment - would have prefered a dishwasher to the washing machine but knew what we were getting when we booked and this in no way affected our 10 out of 10 score for this property.

The peace and quiet of the countryside, ideal location for cycling the trails

A lovely holiday cottage.

The only slight problem we had was with the directions. We found the group of three cottages quite easily, and pulled into what seemed the obvious area. But then we couldn't see the "nameplate" with the keysafe for "our" cottage. Eventually worked out that we should have stayed on the road a few yards further and pulled into the "layby" where "our" entrance was.

Shepherds Retreat is a great place to stay for two people,everything you need,here's the BUT, being out on long walks returning to base had to be content with a shower as there is no bath to relieve the aches of a couple of s.

70 year olds. Not put off we would stay there again .

We thought the situation of Shepherds Retreat was exceptional.

A short walk to the River Dove, very near the Tissington Trail and a short drive to shops at Hartington and Ashbourne. Also convenient for days out: we loved Chatsworth House and Carsington Water. The cottage was comfortable and welcoming after a day out walking. In fact we enjoyed our stay so much we have rebooked for next May!

Fantastic experience.

In fact, it was so good, we immediately booked to return.

Shepherds Retreat was beautifully presented with many luxury finishes.

To name a few would be the underfloor heating, quality towels/bedding and instant access to Netflix & amazon prime. A great deal of thought has clearly been put in to the Retreat. The Retreat is well positioned close to many of the must-see places in the Peaks, normally only a 30 minute drive. It's then nice to come back to peace and quiet, with the sheep and lambs for company in the nearby field. The owners surprised us with a bottle of Prosecco as we were away for our anniversary. They were also quickly on hand to help when needed, providing a great service.

Really a lovely lovely place.

The Shepherd Retreat is off a very high standard. Clean and tidy with everything you could ask for. Set back off the main road with easy access to Derbyshire, and Tissington Trail.

The local towns are really nice, especially Bakewell as there is a lot to see and do there.

Lovely cottage for a romantic break away.

Lovely nature surrounding the fields with lots to take photographs off. Bicycle track 200 m from the property, public right of way through the fields which is lovely to have a walk and watch the sheep and cows. So much to do around the area we spent a week here And run out of time to do everything we wanted to. The owners were very accommodating and helpful nothing is too much trouble, they even left us fresh eggs and two bottles of wine. Would highly recommend would definitely return worth a visit. And I am fussy where I stay so this is an honest review.
