And the location is perfect for discovering the Derbyshire dales generally and the village of Youlgreave where White Swan cottage is located has plenty to do both with beautiful river walks and also 3 traditional pubs with good food and a couple of cafes with amazing cakes and pies a deli and general store and post office. Would definitely recommend this cottage and when we next visit Derbyshire can’t imagine staying anywhere else

Thank you for your great feedback. Really pleased you had a wonderful stay and we hope to see you back again! Property Owner

  • "Thanks so much for our stay, the cottage was as described and in a great location."

The property is cosy but with plenty of room for 4 adults which was good. We stayed at New Year and were worried about how noisy it would be with being on a main road but we barely heard a peep from the road or our neighbours the whole week - it was a very peaceful stay. The village itself is lovely with plenty of options for pubs, and also the odd bakery, shop etc too. We were worried about what the courtyard/garden situation would be like but it was very contained and gates were always shut, so this was a huge perk for us. The walking options from the property were also lovely, but we were an easy drive away to get to some more 'famous' walks on some days too. We did find the parking a bit of a nuisance, especially with 2 cars, but kind of expected this based on the reviews and we never had to park more than a 5 min walk away so we managed fine. The only things we'd improve about the property in general are; the mattress in the master bedroom was extremely uncomfortable, the shower pressure was really bad and it was constantly going too hot or cold throughout showering, the condensation in the bedrooms was so bad at times that there were actual puddles on the floor, and finally it would have been nice to have a few more essentials like extra bin bags. Other than these things, we were generally very happy with the property and the stay - it had everything we needed for a cosy week away in the peaks. Thank you for having us!

Thank you for your feedback, we will certainly look into the points you’ve raised. We’re pleased you overall had a good stay! Property Owner

  • "We were aware of some pitfalls before we went, however, the weeks weather did not help at all, rained everyday."

Lovely ancient friendly Village full of History. Great local shops and three good pubs. Our visit coincided with Remembrance which was lovely as we were adjacent to All Saints Church, which we found to be lovely and also full of great history. The road is quite unbelievable, as it seems that everyone uses it as a Rat Run and is quite dangerous. We were very lucky to get a parking space near to the Cottage on the first day and then managed to be outside 5 Church Street. We saw just how keen and sometimes a little aggressive in getting a parking space, trades peoples vans and other cottage rentals, that we did not move the car until the day we left, for fear of not getting a space back. We found the accommodation, mostly, to be in good order, however, there is so much damp, manufactured from nighttime condensation from the single glazed windows, particularly in both bedroom's , that that condensation permeates into the bedding and no doubt the curtains. Pools of condensate water had to be wiped up daily. There ought to be a bedside non slip rug as the floor is quite slippery in addition to its unevenness. The central heating and hot water was great as was the bathroom facilities. Everything needed was provided, thank you. The welcome gifts also appreciated. We normally stay in Bungalows, however, on this occasion we elected for the location above the normal Bungalow choice. This property would suit younger people and would probably be more suited to not having dogs. IMO. We could not find a Visitors Book which is a usual item in Sykes rented properties. There are several items of a minor cosmetic nature that should be attended to, like the front door lock, the lounge door handle to the porch , and the door lounge hinge to the stairs. Previous reviews have suggested some sort of focal point fire in the lounge, maybe just to give off that warm glow feeling. !

We’re sorry to hear that the weather was bad for you and we hope you still enjoyed your stay. We don’t feel this review is an accurate reflection of our holiday cottage as there isn’t any damp in the property. There is condensation on the windows due to the single glazing as it’s a listed building. The road can be busy as it’s the main road through the village and there is roadside parking available either on Church Street directly outside the property or there’s more available parking down Conksbury Lane. We hope overall, you still enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "A very well thought out and decorated cottage, with everything we needed for our weekend break."

We appreciated the welcome basket with thoughtful additions for our dog too. Youlgreave was a beautiful village. The Village Store, only a few doors down, made yummy cobs, perfect after a morning walking. The Bull Inn served delicious pub food and was dog and family friendly- perfect for us. We popped into Bakewell but should have stayed in the village and done another walk. A great location where you can park the car and not move it for the weekend as so much on your doorstep. The cottage had a booklet of great walks from Youlgreave which we took advantage of. We didn't spot a guest book, which we find useful for local recommendations. Others have mentioned the shared courtyard which was only a slight inconvenience if you have a dog with you. Would definitely recommend this cosy cottage.

  • "White Swan cottage was delightful."

So much thought has gone into furnishings etc. everywhere was spotlessly clean including all china glass etc in the cupboards. It is certainly one of the very best cottages we have rented over the last 20 years, situated right in the middle of the village with three excellent pubs, a cafe and two shops!! Just one thing. It would be nice to have had say an electric fire in the hearth in the sitting room if nothing else to give the glow/flame affect as the wood burner is in the kitchen . A very minor point - otherwise everything perfect.

Thank you for your wonderful feedback, really pleased you had a great stay. We hope to see you again ! Property Owner

  • "The cottage is very nice, well furnished, comfortable and roomy."

It is well situated for the shops and pubs and local walks although that means that the views from the cottage and its garden are limited. There was a bit of excitement when some locals from the George broke into the nearby derelict property at the back to rescue a pigeon that had got inside (the door was already only on one hinge so not much force needed or damage done!). Only a couple of minor niggles: only 2 tea towels supplied so a nuisance when they were both wet and the toilet paper was low quality. We replaced the bulb in the cooker hood as what may have been to original incandescent bulb had failed. The LED replacement we put in is not as bright but will be cheaper to run and should last longer!

Thank you for your feedback and replacing the bulb, usually these are always changed when needed but must have been missed. We hope you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

Many good walks right from the doorstep. Little open water swimming area a short walk from the cottage. Several lovely villages nearby like Bakewell. The little village shop is handy for a few bits. My only gripe would be the shared courtyard area. Having a dog, i prefer a property where i can just let the dog out into a secure garden which isnt quite true of this property.

  • "A lovely place to stay."

White Swan is a 17th century cottage updated to a very high standard. It is light and spacious, and extremely comfortable. We didn't use the wood burning stove, as, being in the kitchen, it didn't suit us, as we spent evening time in the living room. I totally get why it is in the kitchen, as there is a lovely huge fireplace there. Is there no chance of a stove in the living room? Maybe this has been explored, and found to be unfeasible?

Thank you for your great feedback, we are pleased to hear you had a lovely time. The fireplace in the kitchen is the original fireplace. We would love to incorporate a stove in the lounge area also and will look to do so if possible in the future. Property Owner
