  • "Without doubt, the views were lovely and exactly as described."

Unfortunately, that was where the positives ended. Although the kitchen was well equipped and most of the appliances worked, the cottage itself was extremely disappointing. As soon as we opened the door, we were hit by a strong damp smell. The entire property felt dirty, and I genuinely questioned when it had last been properly cleaned. There were cobwebs throughout, mould in several areas, and dead woodlice everywhere. The biggest shock came when I was looking for instructions on how to use the electric storage heaters. On the kitchen noticeboard was a letter from Gwynedd Council advising that recent water samples had detected traces of bacteria. Although the letter stated the levels did not pose a major health risk, it advised using bottled water for cleaning teeth and boiling water for any other consumption. As one member of our party has a compromised immune system, this information should have been made clear before our arrival, as it could have had serious consequences. The bedroom layout also needs to be explained more accurately. The third bedroom is effectively on the landing, with two beds tucked under the eaves. Anyone sleeping there has no privacy, as everyone has to walk through that space to reach the second upstairs bedroom. The beds themselves were comfortable, although very low to the floor due to the restricted headroom. Storage was also completely inadequate, with just one small wardrobe on the landing for all guests to share. The downstairs bedroom was acceptable in size but, again, was not clean. We found old sweet wrappers and debris in a bedside drawer, cobwebs throughout, mismatched bedding, stains on one pillowcase, only a single power socket, and a skylight blind that could not be closed. The bathroom was also dirty, with numerous woodlice, no doubt encouraged by the constant damp. The shower screen was poorly fitted, allowing water to leak onto the floor. The bathroom walls and floor, along with the kitchen floor, remained damp throughout our stay despite keeping the windows open, which also explains the amount of mould present. The cottage was cold when we arrived. We attempted to use the storage heaters but discovered none of them worked, which presumably explains why a portable electric heater had been left in the property. There were no instructions for either the heaters or the wood burner. The information folder contained very little of use, so we had to search online whenever we needed information. Finally, while we appreciate that the cottage is in a remote location, prospective guests should be aware that access is via an extremely narrow track with a few sharp bends. There are very few places to pass another vehicle, and if we had encountered oncoming traffic, it would have been extremely difficult for either vehicle to get through. Every journey to and from the cottage became a source of anxiety because of this. It's a real shame because the garden is beautifully maintained and clearly receives a great deal of care. If the same level of attention were given to the cleanliness and maintenance of the cottage itself, we would have had very few complaints.
