  • "Due to renovating our own house, we've stayed in several cottages over the past couple of months and this one has been my favourite."

The quirky upside down living, the location and the property itself all were fabulous. Sarah was great at communicating with us from the start and checked in on us throughout our stay. Would definitely recommend this one.

  • "A lovely, spotlessly clean and quiet cottage in beautiful countryside."

Thoughtfully laid out and very well equipped. The pretty patio is a sun trap with tables, nice seating and parasol. Sarah, the owner, was extremely approachable and helpful. There are so many nice walks and interesting places to visit in this area too. I highly recommend Heribert cottage.

  • "An excellent cottage in a quiet, rural position yet close to Shrewsbury and other interesting locations."

Road network is good too. Nearby villages offer excellent walking and good, local pubs. The cottage is set in a courtyard-type position with other dwellings and a large car park. It is spotlessly clean, comfortable and very well-equipped. Sarah, the owner, has really thought about her customers' needs. The patio-style garden is great for outdoor meals.

  • "We enjoyed our holiday in Heribert cottage so much when we stayed last year that, when the opportunity to return arose, we were swift to go again."

My anticipation was keen, but would Heribert live up to my memories? Well, once again it was easy to find in this quiet area of Shropshire and great to be able to park in our own designated space. On entering the cottage, I felt a warm glow... “Yes, it’s even better than I remember”. Having the bedrooms and bathroom downstairs really suited us. Everything felt fresh, the towels were fluffy, the beds comfortable and the bed linen crisp & attractive. A really practical and much appreciated touch was the night light in the hallway which meant there was no chance of stumbling in the dark. The living area upstairs was lovely and equipped with everything we needed and more. When I found I had forgotten salt & pepper I looked and found them in a cupboard, appreciating that Sarah thinks of everything! We knew that Heribert was an excellent base from which to visit interesting places and it was a joy to travel through the Shropshire landscape to revisit old favourites as well as spreading our wings to Witley Court next to the stunning Great Witley Parish Church. St Michael & All Angels is said to be one of the finest Baroque Churches in the country and I wouldn’t argue with that. We went to Chirk Castle for a really good day out and driving through the sunning scenery for market day at Hay on Wye was a pleasure in itself. On the practical side we found shopping at the retail park off the Shrewsbury bypass was very convenient. We went somewhere different and interesting every day then had the joy of returning to the comfort and familiarity of Heribert cottage. Truly a holiday to remember, thanks to Sarah with her attention to detail, including contact before and during our stay and the welcome goodies she provided. It’s a 10 out of 10 for Heribert Cottage & Sarah!!! Maureen

  • "Although the weather was mixed, we thoroughly enjoyed our week at Heribert Cottage as the accomodation provides a comfortable and well equipped base to explore the plentiful and diverse attractions of the surrounding area."

Sarah communicated well at all stages of our stay but was unobtrusive, generous and thoughtful, going above and beyond to ensure the comfort of her guests. We particularly appreciated the well kept, sunny courtyard when the weather permitted, the plentiful parking and the comfortable beds. With so much more to see and do within a short drive, we hope to return in the near future.

  • "A spotless, well laid out and furnished cottage in an ideal location with a caring owner."

Upside down layout meant it was so much cooler going to bed which was a relief during a heatwave. Only minus was the steps on approach to the cottage, there is no handrail and I found it difficult going down them, ( I have a slight walking disability ) so it is not ideal for disabled guests but I dont wish to detract from the place. It has a high feedback and rightly so.

  • "Immaculate, comfortable with everything we needed, and a little extra."

Thank you so much for a lovely holiday!

  • "A well laid out and equipped comfortable cottage conveniently located for Shrewsbury and all local and nearby outdoor activities."

    I enjoyed my stay.

  • "My partner and I stayed in Heribert with our border collie."

We had a wonderful week, and found that the cottage was accommodating to all our needs. Parking off-road, dog-friendly, washing machine and separate fridge/freezer to name just a few of the facilities. Great! We felt it was one of the best cottages we've stayed in. We are keen mountain-bikers, and the location was a convenient launch point for several trail centres, and also natural trails like the one at Long Mynd - which was excellent and surprisingly technical. The view over the ridge is unparalleled! Thank you so much Sarah. Your attention to finer details was noticed and appreciated.

  • "Excellent holiday accommodation in a beautiful part of the country."

Spacious, well designed and generously furnished and appointed, with dedicated off road parking, in a quiet rural location within easy reach of Shrewsbury. Very good communications with owner Sarah who was most helpful. There is so much to see and do in this area and the house is a perfect base for a couple or small family. Thoroughly recommend.

  • "The cottage was extremely clean and comfortable with many useful items/gadgets etc."

It was probably one of the 'better' cottages that we have stayed in. There were teabags, coffee, milk and biscuits to greet us upon arrival. The owner rang us before and during our stay to check that everything was as it should be and to enquire if there were any problems.

  • "This is a wonderful cottage which is very clean and has very comfortable beds, and is equipped and maintained to a very high standard."

Sarah, the owner has gone out of her way to ensure everything will make this a relaxing, restful place to stay. It is a hidden gem in a lovely peaceful rural area. Plenty of places to visit in the area. Really enjoyed our week there, and would highly recommend to others.

  • "We stayed at Heribert cottage June 11th 2022 for one week, the cottage was a real gem situated in the country side but close to many amenities."

The cottage was well maintained and loved obviously by the owner. It was very well equipped with everything you would expect, the cottage was also cleaned to a very high standard. There was also a very nice surprise with a welcome pack, Sarah also contacted us as soon as we arrived to see if everything was OK with the cottage. We would recommend this cottage it was fabulous for a chill out. Ed /Jane S Wales.

  • "On the odd occasion that I needed to speak to Sarah the owner, I found her to be the most helpful and pleasant lady."

She couldn't do enough to help. The cottage is just wonderful everything you need is there, lovely views from upstairs living room. Yes it's an upside down house, very comfortable. There's a lovely curry house within walking distance to lots walking routes nearby. There's Ironbridge not too far away also Shrewsbury's a really beautiful place to visit. And where ever you choose to go there's so much to see and do, and it's not far away from Wales if fancy a good day out. It's definitely worth the trip and good value for the money. We don't usually go back anywhere but who knows if we go back to Shropshire we will definitely think about it. And we absolutely recommend the cottage to anyone who's going to the area. Enjoy it if you go I'm sure you will.

  • "Heribert is a lovely comfortable welcoming cottage, with the upside-down element actually adding to its attraction."

It is very well equipped with everything you could possibly require. It is quietly situated and the parking is good. Sarah contacted us before & during our visit to make sure that all was well & left welcome goodies as a kind gesture. Heribert proved to be an excellent base from which to explore stunning Shropshire & beyond. We were easily able to take trips to, among other places, Attingham Park, Powis Castle, Shrewsbury, Stokesay Castle, Ludlow, Wroxeter Roman City, Croft Castle and Ironbridge all of which we rated 10 out of 10. We had good meals at the Nags Head and the Indian Tandoori and found shopping at the retail park off the bypass convenient. It has been a wonderful much appreciated holiday at Heribert and we’d love to return.

  • "We really enjoyed our week at Heribert Cottage."

Very comfortable, clean, well equipped, quiet, and an overall great place to stay. The cottage was also more spacious than we had expected from the photos. It was a good base to visit National Trust properties in Shropshire and Wales, with a dedicated parking space so we never had to worry about that when we returned. The patio is planted with beautiful flowers, so we definitely enjoyed a coffee out there most days.

  • "Cannot speak high enough praise of Sarah - the owner."

She seemed to think of the little things. As the temperature rose she even went out of her way to bring us 2 electric fans!!! When we met her, she was so keen that our stay was fine. The cottage was in a good position to get to places. It was in a very quiet situation but some good eating places within easy reach. Bed was really comfortable. Would award Sarah 11 out of 10!!

The property

Pontesbury 2.1 miles.

Heribert Cottage is a characterful reverse-level barn conversion that can sleep up to four guests, making it a quirky base for your next adventure in Lea near Pontesbury, Shropshire.

In a very quiet rural position yet not remote, it is less than 15 minutes from Shrewsbury town centre.

It has been thoughtfully decorated and furnished throughout and has a simple and efficient heating system.

Cosy in the winter and lovely cool bedrooms in the summer.

On the ground floor, there is a bathroom with a Jacuzzi bath to relax in or an over-bath shower if you’re quickly freshening up for the day, with a helpful handrail for stepping in and out.

The hallway has the washing machine tucked away behind the door.

There are two lovely ground-floor bedrooms with quality furnishings, one with a double bed, and the other with a 4-foot double.

Though the bedrooms are on the ground floor, they have an elevated position which makes them feel like you are upstairs.

Both bedrooms enjoy the morning sun (there are blackout blinds) and views of the eucalyptus tree in the attractive courtyard below.

The stairs lead you to the first-floor open-plan living space, with a Velux window, a much-admired elephant tapestry, and pictures of local scenes.

A very well-equipped kitchen has everything for your self-catering needs, and a dairy maid airer is sited unobtrusively in the eaves.

The Ikea 3-seater sofa bed in the living area transforms into a sumptuous king-size bed to offer flexible sleeping arrangements.

There are lovely countryside views, and outside there is private, concealed off-road parking.

From the gravelled driveway, the cottage has shared steps down to its own pretty patio with colourful planted tubs and a choice of seating for you to enjoy the morning sun - indeed, sun all day as it is south-facing and the peacefulness of your surroundings.

Heribert Cottage (and its neighbours) derives its unusual name from the Cadfael series, which was filmed in Shrewsbury around the time the barns were converted.

The cottage nestles on the northern edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB, a website well worth visiting, and is a fantastic base for walkers and cyclists.

It is close to Earls Hill, Pontesbury Hill, and a fraction further away are the Stiperstones and the Long Mynd, all with beautiful walks.

Choose your route for an easy walk or something far more challenging or just walk out of the drive for an evening stroll along the pretty lanes.

For cyclists, there’s a fantastic network of rural cycling - it is on Route 44, the Six Castle Cycle Way.

This is a 58-mile signed route between Shrewsbury and Leominster, linking six very different castles, from the romantic ruins of Bishop’s Castle and Richard’s Castle to the substantial stone buildings of Shrewsbury, Ludlow, and Croft Castle, and the elegance of Stokesay.

Highly recommended by birdwatching enthusiasts is the Polemere Nature Reserve, less than half a mile away from the cottage.

The nearest village shop is a short distance away in Hanwood.

You can find the Nag’s Head pub, an excellent butcher, and a further selection of village stores in Pontesbury, just 2 miles away.

On the main road, within walking distance, is an ex-pub-turned-takeaway Tandoori (they will deliver as well).

There are good supermarkets within a short drive and a retail park just off the Shrewsbury bypass where you can do your shopping.

In historical Shrewsbury, birthplace of Charles Darwin, there is the castle, many lovely independent shops, great places to eat, and the award winning Shrewsbury market hall packed with quirky businesses, traditional butchers and fishmonger and food stalls.

For the avid golfers and fisherperson, golf at Arscott welcomes non-members, and you can find the course and Lea Cross Fishing Village within one and a half miles of Heribert Cottage.

For hill walking: Pontesford Hill and Earls Hill, Heather-Clad uplands of The Long Mynd and The Stiperstones, Montgomery, Rodney’s Pillar, Hawkstone Park Follies and Lake Vyrnwy.

For days out: Powis Castle, The Ironwork Centre Oswestry, Attingham Park, Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre at Craven Arms, Ludlow, Ironbridge Gorge, Enginuity, Black Country Museum, RAF Cosford Air Museum.

For birdwatchers: Polemere Reserve, Venus Pool near Cross Houses, Whixall Moss in North Shropshire and the lakes at Ellesmere.

For a quaint and homely, centrally located base in Shropshire, choose Heribert Cottage.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.
