  • "Review of The Nest, Meare Meare is a tiny, peaceful village with incredibly friendly residents."

It’s the kind of place that offers complete solitude and a real break from the noise of city life. Anyone choosing to stay here should be aware that a car is essential - both for getting around and for accessing basic amenities. The Nest itself is clean, quiet and set in a lovely, tranquil location. However, the accommodation is very basic. It would probably suit someone passing through Meare who simply needs a place to sleep for the night, rather than anyone planning a longer stay. The advert doesn’t make it clear just how limited the facilities are. The “kitchenette” is essentially a microwave and kettle placed on a table, with a couple of drawers containing minimal crockery and a small fridge. There is no sink, no coffee maker and no hot plate of any kind. The wooden chairs, a single armless leather chair, and two tiny coffee tables also don’t realistically make for a comfortable dining area. While heating may be adequate in winter for a loft conversion, there is no provision for summer visits, not even a fan, which makes the space quite uncomfortable in warm weather. The listing also mentions a village shop that can be easily reached for essentials. This is not accurate. There is no shop in Meare. The nearest place to buy basics is Glastonbury town centre, which is a 10‑minute drive or roughly a 1-hour 30-minute walk. Additional points to note: there is no television or iron, and the WiFi password provided does not work. A small suggestion for the owners: for guests arriving late at night or without a car, even a simple pint of milk in the fridge would make a meaningful difference. Meare is a beautiful, quiet village, and The Nest has potential as a stopover location, but clearer advertising and a few thoughtful additions would greatly improve the experience for future visitors.

For a rewarding day out, head into Wells and wander through its historic streets, pause to admire the cathedral rising above the city, browse independent shops tucked along characterful lanes, and linger over lunch in one of the welcoming cafés.

A short drive will bring you to Cheddar Gorge, where you can follow winding routes through dramatic scenery, look up at towering cliffs as you explore on foot, and take time to enjoy the changing views across the landscape.

For something a little different, visit Wookey Hole and spend the day discovering its underground world, moving from cavern to cavern, enjoying the sense of exploration, and rounding things off with a relaxed stop nearby before returning to the calm of the countryside.
