BARRHILL

Girvan 12 miles; Newton Stewart 18 miles.

Barrhill lies in the Carrick Hills in South Ayrshire in Scotland. It is a small village boasting a pub and a village store. The Martyrs’ Tomb memorial commemorates an incident in 1665, when two local men were found to be in possession of bibles and assumed to be covenanters, and were subsequently shot by soldiers. Today, a scenic walk follows the banks of Cross Water from the village centre to the tomb. There are several nature reserves surrounding Barrhill including the spectacular Ailsa Craig, 12 miles west off the coast of Girvan, while golf and fishing are also plentiful. Walking and cycling can be enjoyed in the Galloway Forest Park, which contains part of the renowned 7stanes mountain biking complex, offering cycling for all ages and abilities. The forest park has also been awarded Dark Sky Park status and is ideal for stargazing. Barrhill is a lovely, peaceful base from which to explore this fascinating and historic part of Scotland.
