"We were blown away by this property."
The place was amazing and far exceeded our expectations. The rooms were incredibly spacious with plenty of storage, everything was tastefully decorated, the kitchen well equipped and the hot tub was the icing on the cake! The whole place was far larger than we were expecting which was a real bonus. Jim, the maintenance man, was so friendly and gave us many great trip and activity ideas. Would love to stay again.

"We really enjoyed our stay at the property and especially the hot tub, which contrary to another reviewer we found lovely and warm."
In general we thought it was good value for money.
Positives were the location, lovely grounds, spacious property, warm rooms, nice fire and overall general cleanliness.
The negatives were mainly the main double bed was very squeaky whenever you moved (although thankfully I discover placing something behind the headboard helped improve this). Other than that, small things like having more than 4 plates, dishes, forks, spoons etc. would have helped a lot! Finally, Aga was lovely when you get used to it, but it is gas and not electric so this should be rectified in the advert. It did make the kitchen lovely and warm though - this was such a large space it may be worth having proper seating in here because of this in future.
Anyway, lovely place overall and we really enjoyed our small break with our 2 kids.

"What we liked:
Oh my goodness — this property was gorgeous!"
The drive in was absolutely amazing, with a castle-like feel. You do share the property with other renters, but it truly feels like you have it to yourself. The countryside setting is beautiful and peaceful, so definitely plan on renting a car. Inside, the décor was exactly as pictured, and I loved it. One of the bedrooms was spotless, with bed linen that smelled fresh from the wash. The welcome touches of fresh fruit and a box of shortbread were much appreciated.
What we didn’t like:
The hot tub wasn’t very hot — more like taking a warm bath with jets — so be prepared if you’re expecting something hotter. One of the bedrooms had a musty smell that left my girls’ clothing with an unpleasant odor. The floors hadn’t been deep cleaned in a while, so I’d recommend bringing socks unless you want blackened feet. The washer ran for hours and we had to figure out how to stop it ourselves by reading the owner’s manual. Most importantly, there was visible mold in the house. This is a serious health concern — especially for anyone with allergies. My daughter is allergic to mold, and this could have easily sent us to the hospital in another country. Thankfully, we had her inhaler and were able to keep her out of the bathroom except for quick trips, but it was still a big concern.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. I’m delighted to hear that you enjoyed the property’s unique charm and peaceful countryside setting. It’s wonderful to know the décor, fresh linen, and welcome touches like fruit and shortbread made a positive impression — we truly appreciate your kind words.
I’d also like to take a moment to address the concerns you raised:
Hot Tub Temperature: The hot tub is set to a maximum of 40°C in line with health and safety regulations. When you left we could see that it read slightly lower (around 38.5°C), but this is within safe operating limits.
Musty Smell in Bedroom: The library bedroom features antique furniture and vintage books, which can sometimes carry a natural aroma. We understand this may not be to everyone’s preference and will look into ways to minimise this.
Floor Cleanliness: The floors are steam-cleaned weekly, but we’ll review our process to ensure they meet the highest standards at all times.
Washing Machine: We appreciate your patience with the washer. As each appliance can vary, we provide manuals to help guests navigate any unfamiliar settings.
Mold Concern: I want to reassure you that there is no mold present in the property. We take health and safety very seriously and conduct regular inspections to maintain a safe environment for all guests.
Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and we’re committed to making improvements wherever possible. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us we hope to welcome you back in the future.

Comfortable beds, warm, and lots of hot water which isn't always the case in holiday cottages. Recommended.

"We had a lovely stay at Auchentroig House - it was such an enjoyable experience in a wonderful setting, in the countryside but not far from amenities with a car."
The rooms were very spacious and had lovely original features - yet it felt homely. Alexander is very friendly and helpful, and went out of his way to sort out our little mishap (!) which was much appreciated :) We've already told friends and family what a lovely time we had, and hope to return again in the future - thanks again :)

We loved the gray cat.
A few things:
- We missed a few basic things in the kitchen such as:
- Salt and peper
- A tea towel and/or kitchen towel
- A good set of pans
- Overall cleanliness

"The environment is splendid and the stay memorable."
Nevertheless, a few shadows obscure this idyllic setting.
· It is a great pity that the cookware is minimalist, does not allow you to fully exploit the AGA cooker.
· No vacuum cleaner or necessary to wash the floors to maintain a minimum during our stay
· And for holidaymakers from the south with a young child (used to milder temperatures at the end of the day) and having no possibility to heat the rooms a little!
But it remains a good memory

"So much potential."
As you head up the drive & the house comes into view it is indeed an impressive sight. Even on entering Apartment 2, it is easy to imagine the house in it's glory days with the high ceilings, wooden floors & large fireplaces.
However you don't need to be there long before the cracks begin to show (quite literally in some cases).
Begining in the kitchen, the drawers in the freezer were moldy around the edges & one drawer was missing. The windows were dirty on the inside, the paint on the window sill was peeling & even where it wasn't, the finish was very poor. There were four out of five bulbs not working in one of the fittings, the lighting in the work area was terrible & although there were striplights under the cupboards they didn't work.
Despite the huge amount of cupboards in the kitchen, it was poorly equipped with utensils & most of the cupboards were empty & some of the crockery & cutlery needed washing prior to use. There was also a cardboard box in the corner containing rubbish & there was rubbish still in the bin. This may have been from previous tennants but should have been checked.
Whilst an AGA looks very nice & is in keeping with the style of property perhaps a Range cooker may be more suited to modern life whilst still looking the part. Quick one pan meals are not really suited to an AGA that has only boil & simmer hot plates with no control. Also a useable table/ worktop close to the AGA/ cooker would be helpful (maybe a small, wheeled Butcher's block or similar) rather than having to keep walking about 6 metres between cooker & prep area. You could use the dining table I guess but it is a bit low for prepping. The AGA also made it very hot as it is on all the time & most of the windows were painted shut.
The bedrooms (formerly the Library) were large & bright but again there were bulbs not working in one of them & there were only eight wooden coat hangers plus one cheap plastic one between both rooms.
The bathroom although large, had just a basic cheap bath with electric shower over. Again the decoration was poor & there was the inside of a toilet roll under the radiator in the corner.
The porch leading to the front door had only a battery motion sensored light on the floor which made it very difficult to see the keyhole if entering or leaving in the dark. If you first arrived in the dark it would be extremely difficult to see the numbers on the keysafe.
It is obvious (& normal) that the building has gone through a number of changes (even to the extent of having plastic double glazed windows installed in places -who, how, why??) in it's life but whether the current owners or previous ones have "converted" it to it's present condition, it needs a lot more time, effort & care (& money) spent on it to really do the house justice.
I believe that the main part of the house is converted into a larger two floor apartment. This was occupied by a group of Americans while I was there & I was told that they had been before & it was very nice so maybe there are plans for improvements elsewhere although I won't hold my breath. The faults I noticed are not recent.
Despite all that negativity I would consider staying there again but would want to know that significant improvements had been made.

"Some lovely touches such as flowers and fruit and cake but not bread or milk which seemed odd re the care package."
Only shampoo in the bathroom and no conditioner or shower gel or handsoap which seemed odd compared to the first Sykes property we stayed in.
Also, no kitchen roll re the expansive amount of surface and counter tops this beautiful kitchen provides.
Property could be noisy depending on other guest behaviour. Also it could be cold if you weren't used to lighting fires!
Aga gorgeous. Rooms gorgeous Views amazing! Good directions to the location and drive a little bumpy if you were attending in a low suspension vehicle.
Generally an elegant, off grid experience with amazing space and beautiful local wildlife such as Red Squirrels and friendly neighbourhood cats!
In the second bedroom the light fitting did rattle when guests walked overhead and some bulbs needed replacing in the kitchen
