  • "Achmore house is in an excellent position for touring Lewis and Harris being in the centre of the island."

    The amenities in the house are perfect for comfort and enjoyment. The breathtaking view from the front of the house is understated, as is the size of the garden. Our only negative comment is the lack of an upstairs toilet. We had an extremely enjoyable holiday here with our family.

    Very conveniently located to tour the island of Lewis and also to travel to Harris. The owner was welcoming, even though we arrived off the late ferry, and had left us a locally made cake and biscuits. I would have no hesitation in recommending Achmore schoolhouse as a holiday location.

    Views to the southern hills were lovely. Well equipped and a welcome warm house to return to each day. Shame there is no where outside to store beach paraphernalia and avoid getting sand in the house although the utility room was a great space for drying things! Thank you for the warm welcome.

  • "The house was in a brilliant location, great for exploring Lewis and Harris."

    The house was lovely, we loved the open plan living room and kitchen, it was really nicely done and very social. I would definitely recommend the house but there were a few things which could be improved to make the house a stellar stay. I left a note of these for the owner so hopefully they are picked up on for future guests. There was also no information left on how to use appliances, or on the local area, which we found quite unusual.

    We like it so much. Mairi, the owner, is a lovely host. We got a delicious Black pudding, fruits and cookies as a perfect welcome gift. The view from the windows in the kitchen is unbelievably pretty. We miss it!! We can only recommend the Achmore Schoolhouse. It was wonderful to be there!!

    The accommodation was even better than expected and it was a pleasure to return there after our days out exploring. We found it warm and comfortable and appointed to a high standard. It was great to be able to sit at the table and look across to the mountains - an ever changing view with the clouds moving across. The lovely owner greeted us on arrival and left us with some food items which was very kind. We found the location to be ideal for exploring Lewis and Harris as it is centrally placed. This was a bonus as we had underestimated the time it would take to reach and explore some areas. I would definitely book again.

    Very tastefully furnished and well-equipped. Everywhere had been cleaned thoroughly and sanitised with regard to Covid 19 regulations. Extremely welcoming host who ensured we had everything we needed. Situated not too far from the main north/south road which enabled access to all areas of Lewis and Harris. Wonderful holiday!

  • "Beautiful spacious house … very clean."

    Nice welcome from Mairi and thank you for the welcome gifts. Very good location for sight seeing around Lewis and Harris. Our only issues were the lack of blinds in the attic bedroom and (we had to be inventive with black bin bags) and the fridge was making a very strange noise and must need attention. I am sure that Mairi will address the two points I have mentioned. score ….9/10. would definitely recommend. LHH Response: We have reported the missing blind issue and the noisy fridge to the owner and she is going to get blinds fitted on the windows at the earliest opportunity. She was unaware of the noisy fridge and will have it seen to shortly. Thankyou for giving the useful feedback and glad you enjoyed yourselves!

  • "Hi, We had a great time at the house."

    It was perfect though could do with a hook on the back of the main bathroom door to hang clothes, and a loo brush! This however is very minor, the house was beautiful, had a lovely view, was relaxing and had everything else we needed for a week long stay. It was very well situated to explore the whole Lewis and Harris. Thankyou.

Achmore Schoolhouse is a holiday home in Achmore on the Isle of Lewis, close to the main Lewis to Harris road allowing guests easy access for exploring both islands during their stay.

On entering this light and airy property, visitors are greeted by a delightful sitting room with ample seating, a feature window seat ideal for curling up and enjoying the sublime views over lochs and hills, an attractive woodburning stove and a Smart TV.

Enter the fabulous breakfast kitchen and you’ll be dying to don an apron and get cooking, using a selection of the fantastic ingredients available locally.

You can perch on the breakfast bar for a more casual meal setting or once you have prepared a delicious meal in the superbly fitted kitchen, you can sit around the dining table while you enjoy your food and catch up on the day’s adventures.

There is also a working Harris Tweed Mill at Carloway, the Harris Gin distillery and a short drive away are beaches at Dalmore and Uig Sands.

To explore further afield there are ferries and boat trips from Tarbert and Stornoway and the delights of the Isle of Harris are less than an hour’s drive.

A short drive from the property are the ferry terminals which serve the islands of Lewis and Harris.

STORNOWAY

Arnol 14.5 miles; Callanish Stones 16 miles.

Stornoway is the only town in the Outer Hebrides and is a bustling and growing area with a busy working harbour, a great selection of shops selling local gifts including Harris Tweed, leisure facilities and wonderful award-winning restaurants selling locally sourced food of the highest quality. Lewis is a place where the lilting Gaelic language is spoken everywhere! Visitors to the town will find plenty to keep them occupied, the magnificent Lews Castle Grounds and the iconic Lews Castle, many good museums and art galleries and also a smart golf course and clubhouse. The large, quiet sandy beaches are close by and provide visitors with wonderful views and the town itself forms a great base for a holiday exploring the unique islands that form the Outer Hebrides. On the north west side of Lewis you can visit the village of Arnol with its Blackhouse Museum, an unmissable visit for anyone wanting to understand the way of life that was once widespread in Lewis. Carloway Broch is nearby and is another fascinating landmark and incredibly well preserved. The Callanish Stones from the Neolithic are also well worth visiting. The whalebone arch and numerous Iron Age dwellings on stunning Bosta beach make for great days out. The friendliness of the local people will astound visitors to the islands and you cannot fail to be impressed with the genteel and contented pace of life you will encounter here.
