“Beautiful cottage with great history in a nice little village.”

Tour de Yorkshire went right past the door -great. WiFi in cottage very poor and intermittent and without a mobile phone signal. Had a good holiday regardless of rain.

The property

This outstanding, Grade II listed, end-terraced cottage is in the delightful market town of Middleham.

Set within a stone's throw of King Richard’s castle, which can be seen as you approach the front door, this cottage has been renovated with great style and was featured in the Guardian's 50 Best Holiday Cottages for Summer 2016.

Set over two floors, the charm and character of the building is shown through the original features, such as exposed beams and stone floors.

On the ground floor you will find a spacious and airy dining room, a characterful, well-equipped kitchen and an extremely cosy sitting room with woodburning stove, ideal for relaxing in front of after a day out enjoying what this wonderful part of the country has to offer!

The master bedroom on the first floor has a real romantic and luxurious feel with its high ceiling, exposed beams and king-size bed.

This floor also provides a spacious double room, a single room and a charming bathroom.

Middleham’s amenities are on the doorstep, with local eateries and excellent old pubs nearby.

Taking a stroll up the hill to the 12th century castle is a must, where you can pay a small fee to enter and relive the castle’s illustrious history.

Also adding to Middleham's charm are the many stables in and around the town, and you will occasionally hear the sound of horses galloping past the cottage.

Three miles away is the Forbidden Corner at Leyburn, a 4-acre garden with a labyrinth of tunnels, follies and other surprises.

Just a short drive away is Hawes, where you can visit the Dales Countryside Museum, Wensleydale Creamery, Jervaulx Abbey and Aysgarth Falls.

With the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District just waiting to be discovered further afield, this charming Middleham cottage is perfect for families looking for that well-earned break!

About the location

Leyburn 2.5 miles; Richmond 12 miles.

The attractive Wensleydale town of Middleham is renowned for its history and race horses. Much of the history is bound up with its Norman castle, which dates from 1190 and has a castle keep second in size only to the Tower of London. The horses are a great sight as they make their way to the gallops every morning. The pretty market square is partially cobbled and offers a range of shops, pubs and places to eat. The bustling market town of Leyburn is just a short drive away offering a variety of great shops and pubs, or why not take some time to explore The Forbidden Corner, a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers and surprises set amidst 4 acres of grounds, providing a fun day out for all the family? All in all a superb base for exploring Wensleydale and all within easy driving distance of York, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales and Heritage Coast.
