The property

West Burton 6.5 miles.

1 Mill Cottage, also known as Old Mill 1, offers a character-filled retreat in the heart of Askrigg, one of the Yorkshire Dales’ most appealing villages.

With its stone-built charm and welcoming atmosphere, it’s a fine choice for couples or small families who want a proper taste of Dales life without giving up the comforts of a well-prepared holiday home.

Step inside and you’ll find a warm, inviting living/dining room where you can put your feet up after a day on the trails.

The woodburning stove gives the space a timeless feel, ideal for those evenings when the weather decides to do what it likes, as it often does in this part of the world.

The kitchen is equipped with everything you need for breakfasts, packed lunches and hearty evening meals, whether you’re sticking to old favourites or trying a few local ingredients picked up along the way.

Upstairs, two well-appointed bedrooms provide flexible sleeping arrangements.

The super-king-size can be split into twins if needed, making it easy to tailor the space to your group, while the double benefits from its own en-suite with a walk-in shower.

A separate family bathroom with a bath and shower over keeps things running smoothly when everyone’s getting ready at once.

Outside, the private patio gives you a quiet spot to sit out with a drink or enjoy dinner in the fresh air.

With off-road parking available, arriving and heading out each day is refreshingly straightforward.

Askrigg itself is known for its traditional stone cottages, friendly pubs and classic Dales scenery.

You’ve got footpaths in every direction, ranging from gentle riverside wanders to more challenging hill walks.

Hawes, easily reached by car, is a must-visit for its Wensleydale Creamery and lively market-town character, while Leyburn offers shops, cafés and a touch of local history.

The wider area is full of waterfalls, viewpoints and tucked-away villages that reward a bit of exploring.

All told, 1 Mill Cottage provides a comfortable, atmospheric base where you can settle in, slow down and make the most of a stay in this much-loved corner of North Yorkshire.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.

WEST BURTON

Leyburn 7 miles; Hawes 10 miles.

Nestling in a hollow of the little-known Walden Valley, West Burton is a jewel not to be overlooked. This pretty and ancient village in the heart of Wensleydale is situated in truly beautiful countryside, with old stone cottages surrounding the famous broad village green. A walker’s paradise, with wonderful Dales countryside, magnificent views and the small, but spectacular Cauldron Falls still delighting visitors since the days when the great artist, J M W Turner, captured its magic. A traditional village pub overlooks the green along with a well-stocked village shop with a cafe and a butcher’s, while there is an excellent range of amenities in the nearby market towns of Hawes and Leyburn. A mile from the famous and impressive Aysgarth Falls. A delightful Dales base.
