BEETHAM

Milnthorpe 1.3 miles; Arnside 3.3 miles.

Beetham is a village of grey limestone cottages and cobbled forecourts in south Cumbria, just north of the border with Lancashire. It was once the centre of the ancient parish of Beetham and rests within the Silverdale and Arnside designated area of outstanding natural beauty, located only fifteen minutes from the Lake District. The village sits on the 15-mile long Bela River with its three-arched bridge and is home to St Michael’s Church. From the village, a path climbs to Beetham fell and leads to the ‘Fairy Steps’. Supposedly, if you climb the steps without touching the limestone sides of the narrow gully, the fairies will grant your wish. Further afield is Milnthorpe, once an important medieval market town, located in the South Lakes between Kendal and Carnforth, just a few miles from the seaside village of Arnside.
