"We had a lovely stay at Richfield."
The property is spacious, clean, warm and beautifully appointed. Attention to detail is first class with stylish decor and thoughtful touches. The garden is a real highlight - overlooking the village church with a pond, seating areas and summer house.
Winster itself is a characterful and friendly village that we frequently visit. We will look forward to staying at Richfield next time.

Set within a beautiful area, ideal for walks straight from the front door. Parking at the property is a plus as other properties nearby only had street parking. The garden is a stunning feature with various seating areas and is peaceful. We highly recommend this property to anyone who enjoys the finer things in life!

"This was one of the best cottages we have stayed in."
Great location, comfortable and well equipped. The decor was extremely tastful and the cottage was amazingly roomy with plenty of space if you bring children with you. The only slight downside was the information pack was out of date with no bin collection schedule for 2024 and village shop opening hours not correct. Not a big problem but wasn't helpful. We have a great week despite changeable weather.

"This property is a great location for exploring the Peak District and it was as described and seen in the photos, with lots of facilities and thought put into the furnishings and supplies."
If you have a dog or small child you need to watch the pond in the garden, and we could not use the wood burner as the flue has not been fitted properly, hence the room smells strongly of smoke, hopefully the owners will get this resolved. As others have mentioned the boiler seems to run all the time, despite the heating being off and as it is in a bedroom it can be a distraction. But overall, we had a great stay here and would use the same property again.

"We found Richfield to be a very stylish, clean and well-cared for property."
Centrally located to many great walks. The house was warm and very comfortable with a very useful bootroom. Being right next to the church, you could hear the clock chimes through the night but you soon became accustomed to them and they weren't that intrusive. Only downsides were struggling to unlock the front door, particularly when we first arrived and similar with the back conservatory door, which was very stiff (the entrance/exit to the house if you used the bootroom). Other than that, a great base for the Peaks at a very reasonable rate! I hope to visit again!

"Richfield is a beautiful stone cottage in keeping with the village of Winster."
Five of us stayed here for Christmas (plus our dog) and it fulfilled our needs very well indeed.
The cottage was beautifully dressed for Christmas including a tree, it really was a home away from home. Very tastefully decorated with large bedrooms and huge comfortable beds, as well as two reception rooms and a large conservatory leading out to the good sized garden.
Excellent footpaths surround the village, although obviously muddy at this time of year, so you just need sensible footwear! (unless you’re my Brother-in-Law but he is Australian!) When you return to the cottage there's a boot room to leave all the muddy stuff and clean up the dog.
The village of Winster is like a step back in time, all the properties are beautifully maintained and took pride in their Christmas decorations, there are two very friendly pubs and a community shop which caters for all your essential needs. We found the residents all extremely friendly and welcoming.
Many interesting places to visit in the local area, and more ambitious walking not far away if desired.
All in all a very nice place to stay whatever the time of year.

My only recommendation - my wife found the sofas too deep for comfort, being only 5ft, but this did not spoil our stay.

"What a beautiful cottage!"
All furnishings were top quality and well looked after. Bedrooms were huge, plenty of room for our baby's travel cot in with us and our toddler slept like a dream in the twin room. The cottage was very clean in well used areas but there were a few cobwebs behind the armchairs in the conservatory and under the beds in the twin room (I only noticed because my toddler dropped his dummy in the night and I had to go under to retrieve it). This didn't impact our stay at all but thought it worth noting so the owners can raise this with their cleaning company. The garden was beautiful and well maintained however the grass could have done with a cut as it was getting quite long with the lovely weather. The only real issue we had was the dustbins already being full when we arrived but a quick text to the owner and it was sorted within an hour and they were very apologetic. This was probably one of the best cottages we've ever stayed in. The boot room was also excellent for families with dogs. It's worth noting for families with young children that there weren't many amenities for children so take your own booster seats/cups/plates/travel cots etc. Thank you for a lovely stay!

"We found the house to be very clean and welcoming on arrival, suggesting that a problem raised by a previous visitor has been dealt with effectively."
Our stay at Richfield was most enjoyable - the house is spacious and comfortable with decor that complements its character. The lovely garden was a bonus. All the appliances that we needed to use worked properly and the beds were comfortable. A little more workspace in the kitchen (which was otherwise very well appointed) would be helpful and care was needed with the rather low cooker hood. The dining area was well designed and in the evening the lighting on the stonework made it particularly attractive. Winster proved to be a good base for a variety of hikes and venues.

"Beautiful property."
Furnishings, bedding, lighting, and decoration. we loved the garden room. Bathrooms top notch. Private parking which is a must in Winster. Our only complaint is the cleaning of the property, dust everywhere. nothing is dusted in, under or above anything. Such a disappointment for the owner, all your beautiful furnishings wont be beautiful for very long if left as they are. Need more meticulous cleaning.

thank you for taking the time to add your comments - most disappointing and frustrating as we try very hard to make our guest’s well earned stay at our home as enjoyable and restful as possible. The comments regarding the cleaning are upsetting given that this matter is totally in the hands of our cleaning company and we have discussed the need for ‘an eye for detail’ and the necessary quality assurance with them repeatedly.
I can only apologise and hopefully your stay was still enjoyable.
I have made formal contact with our cleaning company HCD clay cross (who I’m sad to say aren’t a new offender!!) and will be addressing your comments with them - rest assured there will be improvements !
Hopefully we will see you in the near future

"Had a lovely stay at Richfield."
A beautiful property full of interest. It was as described. The location is great. Just 20 minute drives to Matlock, Bakewell and Chatsworth. The village has a useful shop. We didn't use the pubs and so can't comment on them. There is a good walk starting next to the house that takes you through the churchyard and joins up after about half a mile with the Limestone Way. The church recently has a cafe open at weekends which had lovely cakes. Highly recommend Chatsworth for a visit. The Monsal Trail is great for a good walk on an even surface with an excellent cafe at Hassop which has a large car park. We had a great stay in a beautiful relaxing area.

"It would be useful if there were simple instructions for in particular the TV which completely foxed us."
We are elderly and only slightly technically competent. Also because of age we found moving around the property tiring.with steps in and out of most rooms. Again the staircases were somewhat of a hurdle. We liked the idea of a pub nearby but it would seem the Bowling Green is never open, and the Standard is up an impossible hill.
The property was not really suitable for us.
Hi Peter,
Thank you for your feedback.
To answer your points in turn
- there are 'easy to read' instructions for the TV in the top drawer of the chest of drawers beneath the TV . These are the instructions that came with the TV and the BT box. However, we are always be happy (and have done this a few times when needed) to answer any questions over the phone if upon arrival a guest had queries or worries.
- Richfield is a Georgian 2 storey cottage (built in 1728) and as such has many of the features that are original - this includes stairs and steps. The main staircase is no steeper or difficult to negotiate than any similar cottage in the Peak District. We might suggest that where guests have particular mobility concerns they enquire before arrival.
- We know that the landlord at the Bowling Green has had 'severe' Covid and as such has recently opened the pub on a limited basis - we presume (subject to his health of course) this will change and be back to normal shortly#.
- The Miners Standard (a welcoming and very friendly pub that serves great food and beer) is a 6 minute walk and is 0.2 miles (checked on google maps). Like many villages in the Peak District, hills and valleys form part of the natural geography which we would suggest forms part of the natural appeal of Winster and the Peak District in general

We would love to come back next year, covid allowing! Thank you for your hard work in maintaining it impeccably.
A small request: during the current time, it is neccessary to get test kits etc posted to the current address for international travellers. Therefore, access to the postbox is vital. Could this be rectified for your future visitors to save them stress?

Great walks from the house & great walks after a short car drive - exactly what had hoped for.
I did speak to Mark having made an embarrassing mistake, he bent over backwards for something which was totally my fault - customer care of the highest order. The house is beautifully put together with plenty of space if you need it, and a great dining area where you can enjoy the outdoors whilst sharing a meal indoors. This holiday has been a long timer coming & the 4 of us really enjoyed sharing it at Richfield.

"The setting of the cottage in a lovely traditional , friendly village was fantastic."
This also brings a slight disadvantage as the proximity of the church brings the sound of church bells every 15 minutes even during the night. As a person who used to live next to a railway line I can appreciate that eventually you can tune this out , or wear ear plugs, but for our group, we lost sleep. In one of the bedrooms the boiler in the wardrobe created additional heat and noise that further reduced the ability to have a good nights sleep. Another issue was the failure to provide sufficient Bath towels, and no tea towels and oven gloves that we therefore needed to purchase our own to cover this deficiency. We tried to contact the number given to us by the cleaning manager but he failed to respond. Being of a certain age we chose to have a spare bedroom so that it could be used in the event of a restless night. No bedding was provided for this room and therefore was rendered unusable . The village pub nearest to our cottage was closed during our stay but we had good meals at the Miners Standard.
Can I now say it had many good points. In a village with limited parking we were able to park two cars easily. We were able to use the garden in the late afternoon over looking the above mentioned village church . The cottage was spacious with many traditional features. Boot room for our wet golf equipment and walking boots.. The delightful dining room with glass wall overlooking the garden. The sumptuous comfortable chairs. It’s geographical position was perfect for our first visits to the Peak District. Would I recommend this to people , Yes I would , so long as they were aware of the above.
Dear Maureen
thank you for your comments and feedback.
To respond to your points;
- the beautiful and characterful village church (dating from Norman times) is approximately 200m away from Richfield and does have a working clock. It is unusual that you refer to the chimes as many friends and guests enjoy this feature of rural village life whilst staying in a Georgian cottage. The fact that you liken the church to 'living next to a railway line' is in our opinion 'incredibly misleading' and has never been an issue before or since with guests.
- similarly, the boiler in the second super king sized bedroom is a 'super silent' model (5 years old and serviced annually) and as such we were surprised that this may have caused you concern. Again as above at no time have guests raised this as an issue or concern.
- in general where guests have concerns or worries (cleaning, bedding etc) we do invite them to make contact with us directly (our number is in welcome pack in the property) - In the case you mention our property manager did comment that she offered to make up the single bed you mention but in fact you confirmed that this was not needed
- our property provides 2 quality towels per guest (one bath towel and one medium sized towel) plus a range of tea towels / over gloves etc.
best wishes
