Knowing that I was bringing my elderly father on holiday the owner switched on the heat at a higher setting before our arrival, which was much appreciated.

The cottage is home from home with everything you need to cook and a washing machine which we needed for a long term stay Marie was very welcoming and left us lots of treats . It was nice meet the owner rather than just use a key safe . We had one issue with how to work the heating and Marie’s son arrived within the hour to sort out the problem. Excellent service. I would recommend the cottage to anyone looking for accommodation in the Newmarket area .

We were met by Maire at the cottage who gave us a tour of her extremely cute and quirky cottage. She had thought of lots of nice details to welcome us, wine , chocolates and ice creams in the freezer for our 4 year old! We felt very at home with comfy beds, very clean and tidy and the highlight for us was sitting in the garden house to relax and eat meals. Grandads shed was incredible, peek inside, you won't be disappointed!

  • "Spurling cottage is absolutely lovely - everything has been thought of regarding what a holidaymaker needs for a comfortable stay, and the cottage is very well equipped indeed."

To have milk and coffee and tea available when we arrived meant we could settle down with a hot drink after our journey and start to relax. The bed is very comfy, with crisp white linen, and the living room is geared up for relaxation, with an assortment of books and games to enjoy. The shower is lovely. The cottage was meticulously clean, and the added bonus of Grandad's shed and the summerhouse provided a very special experience. The Red Lion down the road is more of a restaurant than a traditional pub, and serves top-notch, very good quality, delicious food, with a lovely welcome. We could not recommend this more highly for a quiet and relaxing break in the area.

The backyard is a great credit to the owners, quirky and spacious. Equipment in the kitchen was more than anyone could need and the wine and chocolates, plus tea, coffee, sugar and milk very much appreciated. Little things like the number of extra towels, toilet paper, etc, all contributed to a wonderful week. This year is the first time we have used Sykes Cottages and we will certainly make them our first choice next time.

  • "The cottage was spotlessly clean."

When I rang the owner 2 days before regarding key collection she asked about the third person in the party, my 18 year old son. The reason, she dresses the bedrooms accordingly, even down to the Headboard being in same colour. The carpets and bathmats lovely and soft. The towels and other accessories to give it that 'vintage dress code'. The kitchen, well it is extremely well equipped, you wouldn't have a problem doing a three course meal. The owner was really nice and met us and shown us where things were, she left some lovely treats in the fridge, around the cottage, and tea, coffee, sugar etc. There were jigsaws, games and books should you be bored, the television had an excellent choice of programmes to watch and my son extremely pleased with the WiFi and its speed. The garden Room a pleasure to sit and read in, as August bank holiday weekend was very hot and reached a dizzy 35degrees. The man shed, that was pure pleasure sitting in there, such treasures you've collected, I did notice all your Nottingham DA Pennants, our home county. We wouldn't hesitate at returning.

Mrs D was as charming and helpful as before, she has clearly put a lot of thought into the cottage and was keen to ensure we’d have an enjoyable stay. The cottage was spotlessly clean, is very well equipped with everything you'd ever need and has a lovely and very private garden. The welcome gifts in the fridge were greatly appreciated, another mark of someone who cares about her guests. The location is great for visiting Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket and a variety of charming National Trust places. Cambridge is close by with so much to see. Some of the less central colleges are well worth a visit and are free with few, if any, restrictions on entry (unlike those such as King's, John's and Trinity). As before, we’d highly recommend Spurling Cottage

  • "We enjoyed our relaxing stay at Spurling cottage."

This was a lovely welcoming bright cottage, well looked after, clean and extremely well equipped (for which a lot of thought had gone into). As an owner managed and maintained property, the quality was a lot better than some of the managed Sykes cottages of a similar grade which we have stayed in recently. There is a washing machine (which is not made clear in the Sykes details). As self caterers we would normally liked to see larger fridge and freezer facilities but we managed with the local shops and Newmarket being close by. The cottage was well placed for exploring Cambridge and West Suffolk area. Thanks for the warm welcome, fresh flowers and other gifts which awaited us The Sykes directions with the key collection details (which we only used from the B1063) may need revisiting as we found the Brook Stud sign on Left (not right as stated) and we were confused about the left fork mention. Mrs D met us with the key and gave us a brief tour pointing out the main features, which was very useful. Further guidance/instructions to get the best out of the high spec tv (which we are not used to) and details of local walks could be added to the 'welcome file'. . As we book several cottages each year through Sykes we would consider an annual insurance policy rather than a one off. See previous feedback on other cottages re current Sykes website and improvements which could be made.

It was clear that a lot of thought had gone into ensuring it was extremely well equipped. Mr and Mrs D were charming hosts who clearly care deeply that their guests enjoy their holiday at the cottage. The owners were very welcoming, even waiting to greet us despite our very delayed arrival time. Wi fi was intermittent but given the property location, not really unsurprising since its a more rural area.
