• "Upon arrival our disappointment set in."

  Our first impression of the entire complex was a lack of overall maintenance and attention to detail. We encountered a variety of issues during our two week stay which included an unusable barbeque, a drain smell permeating throughout the main bedroom and en-suite, a broken door and frame to the en-suite, a window fell to pieces, an extremely scruffy lawned area and the bin not being emptied. These issues were reported with photographic evidence at the beginning of our stay. In addition to these problems basic items such a as loo roll holder and towel holder are not in the en-suite. The bin is covered in rust and the sink is laughable for an en-suite. There are no shelves in the en-suite and very little storage space in the bedrooms. The mirror is not even secured to the wall in the main bedroom. The dining room table and chairs are extremely uncomfortable. Outside lights did not work and one entire strip in the lounge area. The fridge door had a broken shelf, which kept dropping on the floor and the ice tray provided was ridiculously small and broken. The extractor hood filter had not been replaced for months. There was no iron and the ironing board was miniscule. The outside patio area had at least 3 loose wall capping's. Several empty flower pots and dead hanging baskets did not give a welcoming impression. Cobwebs were prevalent throughout the property - inside and out. There did not seem to be a dedicated single point of contact for resolving issues. We do not expect to be resolving multiple maintenance issues on our holiday. Our two week holiday was certainly less than relaxing and enjoyable due to the the above and for the price paid we expected a lot more for a 4 star Sykes cottage.

  Hello Hilary and unfortunately you failed to mention that as soon as any issues were reported we spoke about them and indeed resolved the barbecue issue immediately by replacing the barbecue with a brand new one which you chose and then used extensively throughout your holiday. The majority of issues have all been sorted by PURE our agents and by us. As I mentioned to you when we spoke, my brother and I do our absolute best to ensure everyone has a good holiday, even though the property itself is several hundred years old and so cleaning is not always straightforward. It has a deep clean in the spring,and we try to keep it as clean and tidy as we can with PURE professional cleaners going in every week to clean it. Indeed, just before you arrived the outside areas had just been jet washed for your enjoyment. When we inspected at the end of your stay, there was no smell as you reported, but, even so, we directed a plumber to investigate the issues you have mentioned. Unfortunately, you also failed to mention the natural beauty within which the Shippen sits and the direct accessibility and view of the beautiful beaches of Prussia Cove and the Lizard. • "We enjoyed our stay at the Shippen."

  It’s in an excellent location with beaches, shop and pub all within walking distance and loads of walks to do from the property so we didn’t use the car once we were there. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped, although the dishwasher was difficult to use because the door couldn’t be opened properly as it clashed with the fridge door. Also a cafetière is needed in order for guests to enjoy the Cornish coffee that was left as a welcome gift. The property could do with a few tweaks in order to make it really comfortable. The outside area needs to be spruced up e.g railing at front needs painting, patio area needs a good tidy and the bins need to be hidden away rather than right next to the patio. Also needs a proper patio table rather than the fold up one provided, and a more modern barbecue would be a big improvement. The furniture in some areas needs to be upgraded, some of it is very flimsy and the bedside cabinets smell very strongly of woodsmoke. All the rooms need a mirror (including the en suite shower room, so people can shave or put makeup on without going to the other bathroom) and the en suite needs a loo roll holder. All the bedrooms need a decent sized chest of drawers, there’s plenty of room for them - we lived out of our suitcases because there was nowhere to put our stuff - or maybe put more shelves in the wardrobes (people on a beach/walking holiday need to put t shirts, jeans, shorts etc away not items that need to be hung up). Also, whilst the property was generally dog friendly the garden/patio area was not secure so we had to keep our dog on a lead at all times when in the garden so he didn’t run off and chase the rabbits at the end of the drive. I hope these comments are taken as constructive criticism; we have stayed in many similar places and these things are what makes the difference between a fabulous stay and an ok one.

We are really glad you enjoyed your time there and thank you for the welcome comments about location and the local amenities. We have already taken on board some of your suggestions, and hopefully guests will appreciate the additions as a result. As you probably could tell, the Shippen has been completely refurbished and redecorated earlier this year and so is in a very good condition, but there are one or two things which still needs to be added back, including the cafetière, which is, I agree, pretty essential.
