  • "Where to begin?"

? From outside property and grounds look great. That's where it ends.. Outside at rear the garden is not enclosed, so not secure for dogs or children. No front gates leading onto a road so not safe or secure for dogs or children. Bigger issue is the amount of building materials and building rubbish to rear of property which is clearly a safety issue for dogs and small children. Bins full of mouldy food, soiled underwear and a vast amount of flies... Therefore outside space is pretty unusable if you're traveling with children or pets. Inside house is pretty well kitted out but cleaning left a lot to be desired. Previous occupants food remnants in air fryer, dirty, greasy, broken limited utensils in drawers, chopping board covered in mould, sand and dog hair on sofa in kitchen, no terrestrial channels on either TVs, 2 towels left for 2 people for a week.. the list goes on...better properties in the area for a lot less money. That's why this one is so available throughout the year! Would not stay again or recommend. Beautiful area, but this property and lack of customer support spoilt holiday unfortunately.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent stay. We always aim to offer a high standard of accommodation, and we truly value positive reviews we receive from guests. I’m sorry to hear that you felt the property did not meet your expectations on this occasion. Cleanliness is a top priority for us, and I regret that you encountered any issues in this regard. We will certainly follow up to ensure this standard is consistently met. Regarding the air fryer, utensils, and towels, I wish you had reached out during your stay, as we would have been happy to resolve these matters promptly. Terrestrial channels along with numerous other channels are available on the TV in the living room. We would have also been more than happy to help you with this if it was brought to our attention. In terms of the garden and the property, it is important to note that we do not advertise either as enclosed. We make this clear in our property description to avoid any misunderstandings, but I’m sorry if this was not fully clear beforehand. The building materials you refer outside the property grounds beyond a stone wall and locked gates is not part of the rental property and is inaccessible to guests. While I understand your concern, this area should not pose any risk unless accessed inappropriately. I also apologise if the bins were not in their usual state during your stay. We will take extra steps to ensure this is addressed in the future. Once again, thank you for your feedback. We take every review seriously and will use this to improve the experience for future Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful time during our holiday at Shroughan, and I'm happy to share our experience."

I appreciate the opportunity to provide feedback, and I'm more than willing to complete the review to help guide future guests and support your ongoing improvements. I look forward to booking another stay with Sykes Cottages in the future. The cottage was ideal for us. The only slight negative was that the rear garden needed to be fully enclosed, which could have been an issue had our dog been more challenging. It was clean and well equipped, with plenty of hot water and modern, comfortable furnishings. We would certainly stay there again should the opportunity arise.

  • "A lovely property kitted out to a very high spec."

In a very peaceful location, yet handy for both Falcarragh and Gortahork. Perfect for recharging the batteries!

  • "Overall the property itself is in good condition and spacious."

However, the listing states an enclosed garden, which there isn't - this was a big request from us for an enclosed garden for the dogs, and the fact that there were plenty of gaps in the perimeter slightly ruined the experience for us as we weren't able to relax with the dogs off lead. Further, there is a lot of debris at the end of the property where current listing photos show a garden and trampoline area - this photo is currently a misrepresentation of the situation. Finally, there are a lot of areas under development on the property land making most outside use of the property unpleasant. Within the property, it is clean and modern. But there is an odd mixture of kitchen wear and furniture for a property that could potentially house 6. I would recommend that the owner take a trip to IKEA and buy kitchen utensils that would support 6 people (e.g. 6 glasses, 6 wine glasses, a large pan, a coffee machine, a peeler, etc.) and also invest in a reasonable sized kitchen table for 5-6 people to sit around. The location of the property is ok, but it is a drive to a village, not a walk. The roads would not be safe to walk down past night. The main reason we opted for the property was an enclosed garden, which it did not have. so taking away that feature, there are other houses better located that you might want to consider.

  • "We have just returned from a lovely seven night stay at this wonderful bungalow."

It is fully equipped with every possible home comfort, truly a home from home. It is set in picturesque countryside but is very close to all amenities and interesting and unspoilt locations. We would not hesitate in recommending Shroughan and hope to return next year. Charles & June

  • "We've just finished a 7 night stay here and wouldn't be more pleased."

on arrival the house was impeccably clean and warm ready for our arrival. everything was perfect from the Temperature, Linen and WiFi speed. Great well equipped kitchen with fresh milk, tea and coffee waiting for us. Outside there are great views of the surrounding mountains, sheep and rolling hills with a dead calm and quiet surrounding. Couldn't have wanted for more and would definitely book again when we return.

About the location

GORTAHORK, COUNTY DONEGAL

Glenveagh National Park 11.5 miles; Dungloe 18 miles; Letterkenny 27 miles.

The village of Gortahork is situated on the north western tip of the County Donegal coast, and is an increasingly popular location for surfing and walking. There are several beautiful beaches around the area, and the village is home to the Samhain International Poetry Festival each year. From Gortahork, Glenveagh National Park is easily accessible for a great day out, and with 16,000 acres, it is a walker's paradise. The renowned artist Derek Hill bequeathed his house and gallery near Glenveagh along with his art collection to the nation in 1980, attached is Glebe Gallery and tea rooms which hosts many exhibitions. For a day's relaxation head to nearby Bunbeag which has a swimming pool and a spa area or An Chuirt Hotel which lies at the foot of the Errigal Mountain and has its own health club and spa. Island-hopping is fun for all the family, and from Gortahork, you can charter a boat and visit Arranmore, Cruit Island and Owey Island. Cruit Island is joined to the mainland by a bridge, so is easily reached by car, but chartering a boat is much more exciting! Nearby, the town of Dungloe plays host to the annual ‘Mary From Dungloe’ festival, and is renowned for its fantastic fishing. This is a great location, and an ideal base for touring the area.
