The property

Set on the second floor of a listed building in Bishop Auckland’s historic Market Place, Flambard is a wonderfully private two-bedroom apartment for up to four guests, with views across the town’s rooftops and private gated parking.

In autumn, the roofscape glows golden in the changing light, bringing a particularly lovely outlook to this tucked-away retreat. There is a sense of being above it all here, with the town’s cafés, galleries and restaurants close at hand and a restful space to return to.

Thoughtfully chosen wallpapers, artwork and furnishings bring colour, warmth and a touch of British eccentricity, giving Flambard a personality of its own. At the heart of the apartment is a spacious kitchen with a large feature breakfast bar.

Designed with cooking together in mind, it is a sociable space for preparing something delicious, lingering over breakfast or chatting while dinner takes shape.

Pick up local ingredients, take your time over a favourite recipe and gather around the dining table to enjoy the results.

An electric oven, induction hob, air fryer and plumbed American-style fridge freezer make cooking and dining in an appealing part of your stay. The comfortable sitting room offers somewhere to settle after a day exploring, while two individually styled double bedrooms provide inviting spaces to retreat to at the end of the evening.

Smart TVs in the living room and both bedrooms let everyone unwind with their own choice of viewing.

A shower room with a walk-in shower and heated towel rail completes the accommodation, while gas central heating keeps the apartment comfortable throughout the seasons. An allocated space in the gated communal courtyard makes it easy to leave the car and explore on foot.

The courtyard also has a small shared sheltered seating arbour.

Auckland Palace is just across the Market Place, with galleries, independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants nearby. A travel cot and highchair are available on request, and up to three well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Flambard’s sister apartment, The Barrington, occupies the same building and can be booked separately, making the pair an appealing choice for friends or families who want to holiday together while enjoying their own space. The Bishop’s Quarter is a family-owned collection of boutique holiday apartments in Bishop Auckland.

Each apartment has its own character, with thoughtfully chosen interiors and a personal touch from the family and their team.

The Barrington and Flambard occupy the same building and can be booked separately for guests wishing to stay close to one another.

Make your arrival a little more special with a Taste of Durham hamper, available to pre-order with locally sourced produce ready for your stay - you can choose from options for meat lovers and cheese fans, alongside vegetarian and vegan selections.

A range of add-ons is also available to enhance your visit or arrange a surprise for your travelling companions - hampers and add-ons are available at an additional cost.

Bishop Auckland is a historic market town shaped by almost 900 years of the Prince Bishops of Durham.

In 2026, the town won Gold and Best in Class in the Large Town category at the Northumbria in Bloom awards.

At its heart is Auckland Palace, with its deer park and Walled Garden, alongside the Faith Museum, Spanish Gallery, Mining Art Gallery and Auckland Tower.

From The Barrington, you can step straight into the Market Place and explore the town’s art, heritage, independent shops and places to eat.

Just outside town, Kynren’s spectacular open-air night show brings England’s history to life - its daytime attraction, Kynren: The Storied Lands, takes visitors into a world of live-action storytelling, with Viking battles, daring stunts, medieval horsemanship and spectacular birds in flight.

Both attractions operate on selected dates.

Nearby Binchester Roman Fort offers another fascinating encounter with the area’s past.

The town’s events calendar includes the Bishop Auckland Food Festival, AGLOW at Auckland Palace and Christmas Town, bringing food, light and seasonal celebrations to the area.

Further afield, discover Raby Castle, take a trip on the Weardale Railway, or visit Barnard Castle and The Bowes Museum.

Hamsterley Forest and the North Pennines National Landscape offer plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling, while Durham’s cathedral, castle and riverside walks, and the open-air museum at Beamish, make rewarding days out.

Whether you come for history, culture, local food or the great outdoors, The Barrington puts County Durham within easy reach.

The apartment is entirely on the first floor and is accessed by internal stairs; there is no lift.

The courtyard and sheltered seating arbour are shared and one allocated parking space is provided within the gated courtyard.

A highchair and travel cot are available on request but please bring your own cot bedding.

The Barrington overlooks the Market Place in the heart of town and during the Bishop Auckland Food Festival, AGLOW and Christmas Town, noise levels can be substantial and can be heard inside the apartment.

These are lively, busy periods that can affect the quiet enjoyment of your stay.

Guests seeking a peaceful break should check event dates before booking.

BISHOP AUCKLAND

Durham 11 miles;

Bishop Auckland is a busy market town, 11 miles to the south of Durham and is home to the Gothic palace of Auckland Castle and deer park, a 900 year old medieval hunting lodge and grounds, once home to the Prince Bishop’s of England. Bishop Auckland offers a thriving arts and cultural scene with a cinema, theatre and arts complex. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the town centre and an abundance of shops to peruse. On the outskirts of the town you can discover the secrets of the largest Roman Fort in the county at Binchester or perhaps book a night at Kynren, a spectacular night show depicting the history of England, seen through the eyes of Arthur, a 10 year old boy from the North East, (opening July 2016) and marvel at the pyrotechnics, stunning lighting and water effects. There is a scenic railway line which runs from Bishop Auckland to Stanhope. It was purchased quite recently by Jonathan Ruffer the man behind the Auckland Project and instrumental in bringing Kynren to Bishop Auckland. The city of Durham is just a short drive north with an array of shops, pubs and restaurants, and a little further will take you to the Roman town of Chester-le-Street or Beamish Museum. A little further afield you can discover the Durham Dales, Newcastle upon Tyne, Hadrian's Wall, the Heritage Coast, Cragside at Rothbury and the North York Moors; there’s something for everyone.
