As darkness settles, an array of nocturnal creatures including owls, foxes and badgers can be watched under a canopy of stars unblemished by city lights.

The market town of Bideford sits on the west bank of the River Torridge and has a good selection of shops and eateries.

A visit to the Pannier Market is a treat for lovers of local produce and hop on a boat from here to Lundy Island or a cruise along the coast.

North Devon has some beautiful stretches of soft golden sands and award winning beaches, surfing waves, sandcastle competitions and water sports galore.

Westward Ho!, which takes its name from the novel by Charles Kingsley has a wide stretch of beach separating the Northam Burrows with a pebble ridge, here golf lovers can try their hand at the Royal North Devon Golf Club, reputedly the oldest links course in the UK or maybe a horse-ride along the beach.
