  • "We had a nice few days at the property."

    It was bright, airy and clean. It had everything we needed to prepare meals. Location wise it’s great. A walk or short drive to the cliff top railway and model village Communication with the host was good and there’s loads of info on places to go / walks etc which helped. Minor points; sometimes the upstairs shower temperature would go cold briefly and there’s a few bumps and marks on the walls. Nothing serious though Parking isn’t a problem as the road immediately outside can be parked on and always had space. Plus you can park outside the property although that can be a bit tight when people are parked on the road opposite. We stayed during some hot weather and had concerns that it might be too hot being upstairs but there was a fan supplied plus a nice breeze from the balcony doors so this wasn’t a problem We would recommend anyone looking for a quiet base outside of the main town.

  • "A lovely few days away in this well equipped mews house."

    A welcoming house with bedrooms on both levels and a living room/kitchen on the 1st floor. We had small children and so mainly ate in, There were plenty of cooking utensils and pans provided. The house was comfortable and just right for 3 adults and 2 children. Friendly and helpful host provided us with local information. Would definitely stay here again…

  • "Such a beautiful house and so close to everything you need, and in walking distance to Babbacoombe."

    The house has everything you needed and plenty of room for a family of six. Quite a soft bed in the downstairs room. There was a little courtyard, but due to the time of year we visited, we didn’t use this area but in the warmer weather this area would be more suitable for adults and older children as not large enough for smaller children to run around in. Just right for us though.

  • "Fantastic and quiet location."

    Close to town centre and walkable withing 10 mins at slow pace. Clean and tidy on arrival with great little welcome hamper of essentials. Car parking was slightly difficult due to angle of drive and cars parked opposite hindering manoeuvrability. Low ceilings which we were able to get used to, but needed to duck to get into bed (very minor issue). Comfortable beds but limited storage for own food. Thank you for an enjoyable and relaxing stay

  • "A really comfortable accomodation on two floors."

    We found the experience of having most of the bedrooms and living quarters upstairs to be lovely and convenient and so light and airy. There was certainly no lack of utensils and equipment, everything you could possibly need was provided for and easily accessible in the lovely open plan living set up. Have to mention the beds as they were just so comfortable a real plus when on holiday.The accommodation is situated in a very nice area of Babbacombe. We thank David and his team for a most enjoyable stay and for the welcome pack.

  • "A lovely property we enjoyed our stay, just a couple of things probably need attention the outside decking has one loose board that my husband had a fall on when it tipped as he stood on it."

    And one of the single quilts in the twin room needs replacement as very very thin. Otherwise we had a lovely stay.

  • "My husband and I are so pleased that we chose Monterey Mews."

    It was so bright and welcoming with nice decor. It was also comfortable and spotless. The rooms were bigger than we had expected too. We also happened to meet the owner who was friendly and helpful. St Marychurch must be the nicest part of Torquay. It is like a village but has all the shops, cafes, pubs etc. you can think of in the pedestrian precinct, which is within easy walking distance. Everyone seemed happy and friendly. We didn't need to use the car as there were plenty of buses and would certainly stay there again.

  • "Our family of four had a lovely holiday at Monterey Mews."

    It was a last minute booking so we didn’t have many plans but there is so much to do in this beautiful part of the world we could have done with another week! Monterey Mews is a beautifully converted building, very comfortable, well equipped, spotlessly clean with a lovely owner who provides his mobile for any queries. Situated in a perfect spot for exploring on foot, by car, boat, train or bus. We loved our week there and hope to return again.

  • "I have no real gripe with the holiday house itself other than there are too many DO NOTs listed."

    And tags of how much cutlery actually to put in the drawers as though we are children! Not nice. However, I really disliked the follow-up long letter from Sykes when the holiday wasn't quite over telling one what to do and not to do and how to leave the place. Overkill! I found it quite offensive and not sure I would book through Sykes again. Left a nasty taste right at the end of what had been a delightful holiday in a lovely house.

  • "Wonderful stay at this cottage."

    Everything we might have needed. Just had to remember to duck when moving close to the angled ceilings. It was convenient for all of Torbay. Access through gates a little tricky when vehicles parked opposite gateway and chose not to drive thru in the dark. It did not spoil the holiday in anyway.

    We were disappointed with the size of the rooms, they were very small, being in what really turned out to be a loft, with very low ceilings, the courtyard that we had access to was quite small, the beds were not comfy, we were grossly overcharged to stay at this holiday let, and we will not be using sykes cottages again

  • "The cottage itself was great, cozy, clean and met our needs perfectly."

    .. However, though the cottage itself is dog friendly, due to the tiny court yard and no nearby grassed/dog walking areas etc. you have to walk quite a distance to find a suitable dog walking/toilet area or you have to actually take your dog out in the car to access dog friendly areas. Not too much of a problem for us, but could be an issue with anyone who may have difficulty walking longer distances and need to toilet their dog regularly or as sometimes occurs ‘urgently’.

The property

Set next to the owner's Victorian villa, lies a detached mews cottage providing a homely base in the seaside town of Torquay.

Monterey Mews, so called because of the large Monterey tree in the owner's garden, visible from the open-plan living space, is a wonderful space for six guests looking to explore Devon's south coast.

Step in through the front door and be met first with one of the double bedrooms resting on the ground-floor, decorated beautifully with neutral tones and quality furnishings, it has a standard double bed and is benefitted by a lovely en-suite bathroom, complete with a bath and shower over, plus a heated rail to keep your towel warm.

Head upstairs to be welcomed into the heart of the home on the first-floor, enjoying an open-plan layout, it has light flooding in from the Velux skylights in the sloping ceilings.

Settle on the sofas where a TV with a DVD player can entertain you, or choose to play one of the board games gathered around the circular dining table.

The kitchen has a wealth of appliances for whipping up some tasty meals, with sleek wood-effect worktops and light units, it's a charming space complete with a dishwasher, gas oven and hob, a fridge and a freezer.

From here, step across the room to find the shower room, neatly tucked away here, it holds a walk-in shower to freshen up in.

Continue down the hall after a busy day and get some rest in either of the two bedrooms up here, including a double and a twin, both with classic round, porthole windows and skylights, creating an ambient environment to wake up in.

Dine alfresco or just delight in some evening drinks out in your own private courtyard, while your canine companions can stretch their legs.

You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what to do in the area; begin by heading to the nearby and renowned Babbacombe Model Village, set over four acres of grounds filled with miniature houses, vehicles and people, as well as a fabulous castle complete with fiery dragon!

Catch the nearly century-old Babbacombe Cliff Railway down to Oddicombe Beach, built in 1926, it offers a pleasant way to experience the lovely coastal views, as well as reach the beauty of the beach.

Oddicombe Beach, part of the English Riviera, is perfect for paddling in the waters as well as good for watersports, with golden sands and a popular café and shop on the beachfront.

Another gorgeous spot is Babbacombe Beach, a pebbled shoreline with more calm waters, and you can walk along the Downs claiming to be the highest promenade in England!

Take a turn around Tessier Gardens, a wonderfully-kept park which features a lovely pond, along with a glorious scented garden especially for the blind, it is a charming space.

Find a geological adventure at Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves, offering tours around the natural wonders, with activities for families and kids, and home to a large restaurant too.

Torre Abbey Museum and the Torquay Museum can both teach you a thing or two about the local history, whilst Living Coasts, a zoo and sea life aquarium, is home to a great collection of creatures, including free-roaming penguins, otters, and up-close experiences with the animals!
