Saffron Walden is home to a number of medieval buildings, making it a fascinating place for a leisurely stroll. A market has been held within the town since 1141 and is still held on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Within the town’s attractive common area there is the largest turf maze in England. There is also a Victorian hedge maze in the nearby beautiful Bridge End Gardens, which are maintained by local volunteers and really are worth a visit. There is a fantastic museum based in the grounds of the ruined castle keep, housing oddities such as mammoth tusks. Within easy reach are Cambridge, the Imperial War Museum at Duxford and English Heritage’s Audley End house and gardens.
