GREAT MALVERN

Ledbury 7 miles; Worcester 10 miles; Hereford 23 miles.

Malvern is an excellent centre for both long and short holidays. Its unique history, dramatic countryside and is in close proximity to numerous places of interest that offer plenty for all visitors to discover. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Malvern Hills form a 9-mile range of ancient rock, dating back roughly 680 to 700 million years to the Precambrian period which offers 100 miles of footpaths and bridleways with natural springs and spectacular views in all directions.

Other outdoor activities available include high ropes, climbing and abseiling and fishing and river cruises are available nearby. A number of National Trust properties, gardens and vineyards are within easy reach. Malvern has many individual shops, cafes, art galleries and restaurants and a luxurious spa. Malvern dates back to the 11th century and originates from a Brittonic name meaning “bare hill” which grew from a Benedictine monastery and is situated on the eastern side of the dramatic Malvern Hills. British Camp (Herefordshire Beacon) is an Iron Age Hill fort. The fort is thought to have been first constructed in the 2nd century BC

The town holds antique and craft fairs, farmers’ markets and many auctions throughout the year, as well as the Great Malvern Food Festival in June. Malvern Theatres has an extensive programme throughout the year including productions from the West End and the Royal Shakespeare Company, musicals, and dance, to world-renowned musicians and orchestras; the associated cinema screens new releases.

In June Ledbury hosts an annual Poetry Festival. For the motor enthusiast the Morgan Motor Company offers factory tours and car hire. On the hills, Eastnor Castle’s summer events programme includes the Land Rover Experience. It is just a short drive to the Three Counties Showground which hosts regular events – most notably RHS Malvern (May), The Royal Three Counties Show (June) and the Malvern Autumn Show (September). Worcester, one of the Three Choirs Festival cities along with Gloucester and Hereford is within easy driving distance as are Tewkesbury and the Wye valley.

For music lovers as this area is the birthplace and burial place of Sir Edward Elgar you can follow the Elgar Route a 37 mile circular driving and walking trail celebrating the life and music and the surroundings that inspired Elgar
