  • "A perfect cottage for two."

Hazel and Charlie could not be more helpful. unfortunately they cannot control the weather which was horrendous [storm Gettin!!!] The Christmas decorations and treats were lovely. Would return despite being trapped indoors for 6 days.

  • "Excellent accommodation, fully equipped to a level you could expect at home."

In addition your host Hazel and Charlie are extremely friendly, attentive and helpful. No problem, fully recommending the barn, we had a great holiday. The only reason to give a 9 rating is that we found the depth of the entrance steps to be insufficient to fully support your foot, making attention necessary when descending and use of the handrail. Not a big thing for us but could be difficult for some.

The cottage is in a lovely setting, very homely and perfect to come back to after a long day sightseeing. It is well situated to visit some lovely attractions and we also enjoyed walking around the lanes. Once again, Hazel and Charlie made us very welcome, plus midweek treats of delicious cakes. It was a real pleasure to see them again. We would recommend staying here 100%. Nearly forgot to mention the Alpacas in the adjoining field, they are gorgeous and even got to see them being sheared (fascinating!).

Hazel text me details of a 40's weekend at Ingleton which we really enjoyed. We would definitely recommend and hope to return in the future. Almost forgot the milk, tea, coffee and wine when we arrived was a lovely touch as was the cream cake when we arrived back on Wednesday evening.

It's a great base for a holiday in a beautiful area of England, between the lakes and the Yorkshire dales. The barn is very comfortable and homely well maintained and appointed. Hazel and Charlie made us very welcome and gave us good ideas about what to see in the local area. There are plenty of local amenities, a good supermarket and pubs (including one 5 minutes walk away) . Transport links are good, Giggleswick station is only a short walk away with trains eastward to Skipton and west to Carlisle and Morecambe. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Melsome barn as an excellent place to stay.

Very easy to find, perfect location for getting out and about and very comfortable. Place was toasty when we arrived after a long and tiring journey on a wet Friday night. The owners are super friendly and even went to the effort of putting up some lovely decorations as we were celebrating an anniversary. The bottle of Prosecco was such a treat. As walkers we really appreciated having a hallway with hard flooring where we could divest of rather muddy clothes. If you want to cook the barn is well equipped. However there are some lovely restaurants around and owners are happy to offer suggestions. Can’t wait to go back again.

We loved watching the sheep, alpacas/llamas and chickens and being able to watch the light changing across the hills and fields. There are lane walks from the door and it's about 20 mins walk into Settle. The whole area is beautiful. There was also lots of walking within a short drive away - so a good base for those wanting to stretch their legs (be it up a hill or along a river or bridleway) and to breathe in the fresh air. There were helpful walking books provided. There are lots of interesting villages around the area as well as good places to eat to suit all tastes and pockets. Our hosts, Hazel and Charlie were there to welcome us and ensure all was well. They let us be, during the week but were around to help quickly sort out a minor issue of a guest's noisy TV in the flat below, late one night. It was great to know they were concerned that we had the best holiday we could. They checked all remained well for us and even provided ideas for trips/ walks. The fresh flowers and lovely wine and cake were kind added extras. We did not want to leave!

Hazel then brought us a cake and loaf of bread from Settle on market day. When the weather turned a little cooler Hazel was quick to ask if we wanted heating on and Charlie even offered to drive us to a restaurant one night so we could have a drink. The property is in a very quiet area, surrounded by fields and sheep. We loved the peace and quiet but it was also nice to only be 5 minutes drive from Settle and a few minutes walk from the Craven Arms, where we had a couple of meals which were very good. We walked the 3 Yorkshire peaks while there which are all within easy driving distance from the property. It was so nice to return after a days walking to the comfort of the barn. We would highly recommend this property, not only for its location but also because of the quality of everything in the property. But mostly because of Hazel and Charlie who really provide that extra special personal touch to make your holiday so relaxed. We hope to return. ( Just a note, there is another equally lovely ground floor barn below Melsome which sleeps 2 and can accommodate a dog, so it would be ideal for 2 couples to stay here, having their own space but being able to join up for meals etc.) Debbie and Chris, June 2021

However I was very disappointed with Sykes Cottages as a company. I was nervous about going on holiday, sleeping on a mattress that someone else had slept on 24 hrs. previously, and tried to contact Sykes, but when I telephoned and went through all the channels, I kept being cut off. I emailed Sykes but they didn't get back to me until after they had taken the full cost of the holiday from my account. So I was then prevented from cancelling my holiday. They eventually emailed me 2 weeks before going to say no one was going to be staying in the barn for 3 days before we were due to go. However when we arrived we discovered this was false as the barn was let and the people had only vacated that morning. So I will not be using Sykes again.

Thank you for your feedback for Melsome Barn, we are glad to hear that you had a lovely time. Regarding the email we sent to you about the property being empty prior to arrival, at the time of the email, this was the case we did not have another booking in place, however, this can change. • "Melsome barn is quite superb."

It has space in abundance and all that you need and more. Everything works, the bed is supremely comfortable and the shower is a delight. The location is quiet, and ideal for access to many of the Dale's attractions. And to cap it all off, the hosts are the epitome of hospitality. No! We are not relatives or some-one familiar trying to talk it all up. It just is a truly lovely place to pass time joyfully.

  • "We spent six nights at Melsome and had a wonderful stay."

The property is set in a beautiful location and equipped with everything you could possibly need. Hazel and Charlie are great hosts and were available should we have needed them - not that we did as everything was perfect. On arrival, there was milk in the fridge, fresh flowers, wine and cakes which was a lovely touch. There are lots of walks accessible from the property in some of the most beautiful parts of the Yorkshire Dales. Our highlights were Settle to Stainton, Malham (absolutely breathtaking) and pen-y-ghent. We also spent a day in the Lake District which is a very easy drive from the property. The kitchen is very well equipped to cook your own meals but there are also lots of nice places to eat near by as well. After a day out hiking Melsome was the perfect place to return to and relax before the next days adventures, if you can drag yourself out of the most comfortable bed ever that is! Thanks Hazel and Charlie for a wonderful stay, we have already started thinking about dates for our next visit.

  • "The place is really lovely, and the Hazel and Charlie were so welcoming."

I really felt like they would sort out any issues we had. The barn conversion had everything we needed and was very homely. It was a great base for our walking holiday. The only thing I would say is that if you want to have a lie in I would recommend an eye-mask as the skylights in the bedroom are not fitted with blinds. Other than that we had a fantastic time and would recommend.

Thank you for your feedback, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We appreciate your comments and have ordered blinds for the velux windows thanks again Hazel & Charlie Property Owner

  • "A five star stay!"

I do not have a single negative comment to make about our stay at Melsome Barn. We were warmly greeted on arrival by the owner Hazel (who was always on hand if we had any questions) and shown around what I would describe as a wonderfully generous, luxurious and spotlessly clean, home-from-home. We were also treated to a bottle of wine and some little cakes, which was a lovely touch. The open-plan lounge / diner / kitchen, was large and yet still somehow very cosy. The log burner was a Godsend as we had a blast of very chilly weather! The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed, not that we cooked much for ourselves as the local (a couple of minute's walk) served great food. It was great to have a dishwasher, who wants to be doing dishes on holiday! My husband's main requirement is a great shower, and this one did not disappoint! The bedroom was huge, with a picture window overlooking the alpaca neighbours! The bed was super comfy and there was plenty of storage for us both. The location was great, just off the main road, and yet we were not bothered by any vehicle noise. Settle is a lovely little town and there are walks from the door, or the Three Peaks are easily accessible if you are a bit more ambitious.

Set amongst Dales countryside, this is a first-class holiday home to really get away from it all.

Recently fully restored using much imagination and design flair, the existing owners have gone to great lengths to ensure that Melsome provides stylish and modern accommodation for all their guests.

Enter the retreat via an external stone-built staircase and balcony area into the central hallway.

The main living area is a real delight with a marvellous open-plan design.

The bespoke corner kitchen is well-equipped and there is a central breakfast bar which serves as a dining area.

The lovely sitting room boasts a warm and cosy woodburning stove, a great place to be on a cold winter's night, snuggling up in front of the fire with a warm drink and a good book.

The spacious master bedroom features a super king-size double bed, fabulous A-framed beams and lovely views of the surrounding countryside including the herd of sheep grazing in the adjoining field.

Add to this luxurious mix a modern shower room with walk-in power shower and all the ingredients are there for a superb Yorkshire Dales holiday.

Guests can sit on the balcony and enjoy views out towards the limestone fells and maybe catch the odd steam train going past.

With a myriad of paths, lanes and bridleways from the doorstep, guests can experience walking and cycling through some of the most scenic countryside in the Yorkshire Dales, whilst for the more experienced and energetic guests there is of course the famous Three Peaks challenge.

The Settle Loop is a bridleway which can be walked, cycled or enjoyed on horseback.

For those less inclined towards the great outdoors, there are many sightseeing activities in the area.

About the location

Malham 6 miles; Skipton 17 miles; Kendal 25 miles.

The bustling market town of Settle lies at the south west rim of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, nestled beside the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain - a region of scars, cliffs, caves and potholes - amongst some of the most picturesque scenery in North Yorkshire. Tuesday is market day in Settle, when the square is filled with stalls offering a wide variety of crafts and goods. The market place is surrounded by local businesses, the centre being dominated by The Shambles, an historic three storey building with shops on two levels and houses above, and the Town Hall. There is a good selection of restaurants and pubs and a public swimming pool. The Victoria Hall has entertainment and other activities such as folk nights throughout the year. The famous Settle-Carlisle Railway crosses some of the most beautiful and inspiring upland scenery in the country. Natural attractions such as Malham Cove and Gordale Scar are within easy reach, as are the nearby Dales towns of Skipton and Malham. Settle is in the midst of excellent walking country and is a good base for touring the Dales, the Lake District and the Forest of Bowland.
