The property

Railway Cottage is a beautifully refurbished stone-built retreat in Penybontfawr, Powys, set against a backdrop of rolling Welsh countryside.

Designed for families or friends travelling with a well-behaved dog, its standout features include a hot tub, barrel sauna, and a thoughtfully finished interior that balances character with comfort.

Pull up outside and take in the stone exterior before stepping indoors onto tiled flooring, where exposed beams frame the space and lead you through to the open-plan living area.

Settle into the sofas with the glow of the woodburning stove set neatly within its nook, while the mounted TV and built-in ceiling speakers shape relaxed evenings at your own pace.

Move across to the kitchen, where wooden worktops provide space to prepare meals, then gather around the dining table beneath a distinctive light fitting crafted from a historic horse and cart, adding quiet character to shared dinners.

Climb the staircase edged with exposed stone and softly lit steps to reach the bedrooms, where textures and natural light create a restful atmosphere.

One room features a zip and link bed framed by exposed brick detailing, a mounted TV, and a window seat positioned for slower moments looking out across the surroundings, while above, the second bedroom sits beneath Velux windows, offering a bright, airy feel by day and a darker, tucked-away space at night, with a bean bag and TV creating a laid-back corner.

Bedding can be arranged to suit your stay, whether travelling as a couple, family, or group.

A dressing space adds flexibility, keeping things uncluttered as you settle in.

The bathrooms are finished with comfort in mind, where spacious showers and soft lighting create a refreshing start or end to the day.

In the main bathroom, sink into the deep freestanding bath, adjusting the dimmable lighting as the wall-mounted TV plays softly in the background, allowing you to slow the pace and unwind fully.

Step outside into the neatly manicured garden, where lawn and patio spaces open out into your own private spa setting.

Lower yourself into the bubbling hot tub and feel the warmth ease tired muscles, or, if you’re feeling bold, move to the cold plunge for a sharp, invigorating dip before stepping into the wood-fired sauna, where the steady heat settles back into your skin.

As evening draws in, the garden takes on a quieter rhythm, with open skies above for stargazing.

Rinse off in the outdoor shower room before heading back inside, where the fire continues to glow and the warmth of the cottage welcomes you in once more.

Soak up your local surroundings with a scenic stroll or bike-ride through roaring country hills and along Afon Eirth river, then stop off on your way back to feed that much-earned appetite at The Railway Inn – a quaint pub just a stone’s throw from your property!

Venture a little further for Shrewsbury to explore Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings, visit the Hercules statue, admire The Dingle garden, and catch a show at the Theatre Severn.

Take that short drive to Wrexham to marvel at the National Trust – Erddig, expand your knowledge at Xplore!

Science Discovery Centre, and take a lovely walk through Little Vawnog Conservation Area.

For a peaceful getaway in North Wales, look no further than Railway Cottage.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.
