  • "This is a great cottage with lovely garden."

It is easy to get to the main road in the car (isolation can be a curse) and you can walk to the Oakeley Arms and also, a bit further, to The Grapes Hotel for decent pub food. But the kitchen is very well equipped. Everything worked. The main sitting room is very big. There are good walks.

Thank you for the great feedback! Spring and summer are when the gardens are at their best. Having two pubs within walking distance is great on nights when you want to relax and not have to cook but having a kitchen that has everything you need too I find useful fir family gatherings. I hope you managed to explore some good walks from the house too. Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful week at Ty Coch."

The house was very comfortable and well equipped for cooking. With three older children it was great to have so many sofas and the separate snug so everyone could spread out to relax. The setting was absolutely gorgeous with a wonderful garden to play hide and seek in and some lovely walks from the doorstep not to mention a pub nearby too.

Thank you for the lovely feedback. I arranged the sofas so that at least one wasn’t facing the tv , in the event someone wanted to curl up by the book case and have a read. The snug with just the two comfy chairs and no tv is a great space to watch the birds or settle and cosy up with the log burner. I love cooking so when I get the chance it’s a lovely space to loose myself . Yes, we are very fortunate to have two pubs within walking distance too. Property Owner

Cottage and gardens delightful especially with it’s own stream running down the side of the hill. Beautiful, peaceful views for enjoying the solitude of the location…..despite the inevitable ‘mossies’ at this time of year. Amenities were as described and more than ample for our fortnight stay. Plenty of exploring the nearby surroundings and further afield in Snowdonia. A lovely break for us all..would definitely book again. Thank you.

Beautiful walks from your door and 2 pubs to visit. Absolute peace with a waterfall to fall asleep to the sound of. The owner leaves a wonderful welcome pack which we always enjoy.

Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback! My aim is to create a welcoming space, where you can just kick off your shoes, listen to the birdsong and cosy up beside the range in the living room. I think about the things I would like to meet on arriving. It’s nice to turn up at a cottage after a long drive and be able to pop the kettle on and have a slice of cake and a cuppa before you unpack or need to venture out to the supermarket or your delivery hasn’t arrived yet. We had fantastic weather so were able to make the most of the gorgeous garden, but inside the house was also lovely. The house is in a great location, lots of amazing walks and beaches within half an hour’s drive. Totally recommended.

Thank you so much for such positive feedback. This is a great time of year to enjoy the garden and surrounding area. The azaleas and rhododendrons are in full bloom and the roses are beginning to bud and blossom. Unfortunately the grass is looking parched as there hasn’t really been any rain for weeks! I had tried to think about all the things a family need to make their stay as comfortable as possible without having to bring everything but the kitchen sink with them. Ty Coch also remains a much loved family home and I that respects maintains a homely feel. Thank you for booking and staying and Ty Coch. Property Owner

  • "We loved staying here."

The cottage feels more like a home than a holiday let, with a lovely ‘lived in’ feeling and relaxed atmosphere. We have never stayed anywhere that was so well equipped, the generous owners have thought of everything. We didn’t miss a dishwasher; the view from the kitchen window whilst washing up is lovely and we found the washing machine and tumble dryer very useful. The caretaker does a great job; the cottage was well prepared for our arrival and was very clean - not easy with such a big house and limited time. There was a very generous welcome pack which included wine, cheese, butter, eggs and Welsh cakes which was much appreciated. The garden is fabulous; semi wild with stream and waterfall and surrounded by woodland. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting out with our coffee watching the wildlife - especially the little Voles and Lizard in the rockery outside the kitchen door. The Oakleley Arms is worth a visit, good food and a warm welcome.

Thank you for such wonderful feedback . Ty Coch still remains a much loved family home and I’m glad you had a good break here. We have tried to balance a neatly manicure garden with some wild area to encourage as much wildlife as possible. I have sat in the kitchen and watched a sparrow hawk perched in the rocks by the stream, scanning the bird station. I find it’s amazing what you see if you just sit still long enough. The waterfall is amazing after a downpour and in the winter when it comes thundering down the hillside. Once again, thank you for choosing TyCoch . Property Owner

The house was warm, comfortable and perfect for a family holiday. There was a nice welcome package with essentials (eggs/cheese/milk, chocolate & prosecco) and festive Christmas decorations for the New Year. The Wifi worked well (important for teenagers). We knew there wouldn't be a dishwasher and half thought the washing machine could be a washer/dryer which would provide space. We would happily stay there again.

  • "The property and location were amazing."

But the reason I've marked down for facilities is that it was disappointing to pay £1000 for a week and not to have a dishwasher. This was made worse by having 2 massive butler sinks but only a tiny portable draining tray that didn't even hold a set of breakfast things. There's plenty of room in the kitchen (it had both a washing machine and a tumble dryer, which we never needed). Seems a minor point but this did take the shine off a bit. Everything else was amazing - the cottage was warm and comfortable, with an amazing outdoor space.

I am sorry to hear of your disappointment with not having a dishwasher at Ty Coch . I have stated in the information accessible on line before booking that the cottage doesn’t have a dishwasher fitted, nevertheless, I am sorry it took the shine off of your stay. I have procrastinated with regards to swopping the tumble dryer for a dishwasher but have had some lovely personal notes left from walkers who have come and spent day after day walking the hills in the rain in the wet winter months and parents of young children, grateful that they have been able to constantly wash and dry the bedding before bedtime on a daily basis due to accidents. Regarding the layout of the kitchen, Ty Coch was not designed as a holiday let as it had been a well loved home. There is a surplus drying mat underneath the sink for additional dishes. We have also had a lot of positive feedback regarding those that have commented on what a lovely view to have whilst washing up. Thank you for coming to stay at Ty Coch and I hope it hasn’t put you off coming to stay again. Carolyn Turner Ty Coch Maentwrog Property Owner

Warm and cosy. Plenty of space for a family of 4 and dog. Lots of lovely walks from the house and we braved a zip wire adventure at the nearby Caverns Zip World. Birds, bats and squirrels kept us amused and we all slept so well to the sound of the waterfall in the garden. The kitchen, with its big table and heated floor, is a great place for family meals and activities and there’s a dining table for jigsaws and more formal dining. Enough sofas for us to have 1 each and the dog loved having her bed close to the wood burner. A perfect winter retreat.

Thank you for the great feedback Carol. We try hard to think of all the home comforts that guest may want when they come and stay. Ty Coch is set in a very special area that has its own micro climate and is within a woodland rain forest. This brings a diverse array of wildlife , some more elusive than others and we are pleased that some of them payed you a visit ! We look forward to welcoming you back in the future . Property Owner

It's in a beautiful location and the garden is stunning (but perfectly secure and able to hold in our somewhat energetic Labrador as well as our four year old daughter!). I couldn't fault any aspect as there was everything to hand that you may need during your stay and the touch of the little 'gift studio' so that you could purchase the owners ceramic giftware was a lovely added bonus. It's very conveniently located yet still manages to feel wonderfully secluded - I can't recommend enough! Many thanks

  • "The setting for Ty Coch Maentwrog is very good, being within the Snowdonia National Park."

Maentwrog is at the cross-roads of 2 main roads in North Wales, so access to other parts of the country is easy. There is a pub/hotel nearby that serves food of adequate quality; TripAdvisor feedback is variable. The track up to the cottage is sign-posted as a footpath, but it is obvious that it is used by vehicles. Before you go, use an on-line mapping service with a street-level view to determine where the track is and what its entrance looks like, or you could miss it. The property itself is clean, but be aware that all heating and hot water is controlled by an oil burning stove in the living room, and this must not be tampered with. Even in the summer this heater must be left on, so I imagine that the room could get very hot. Also be aware that there is a constant background smell of fuel oil in the room. If you like to cook when on holiday, the kitchen is fairly well appointed; I found a lack of saucepans to be irritating. For some reason, the owners have the microwave sitting on top of the fridge/freezer, which is far too high to be safe; we moved it to the work surface. For your entertainment, a male blackbird attacks the windows of the downstairs' rooms several times a day.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We are pleased that you enjoyed the setting and location of the cottage. The track to the property is a designated footpath and also has an additional use of providing access to Ty Coch. We are mindful that the oil stove might be too hot in the summer, and it is switched off if the night time temperature is above 15 degrees centigrade. The house is then serviced by supplementary electric heaters, underfloor heating in the kitchen, a log burner and an immersion heater for hot water. On windy days, there might be an occasional smell of smoke from the oil burner, and unfortunately, this can't be helped. We are happy for guests to place the microwave wherever is convenient for them and we do provide five saucepans for guests' use. We wholeheartedly agree that the blackbird does provide some entertainment protecting his brood from his own reflection. Property Owner

About the location

MAENTWROG

Tan y Bwlch 0.5 miles; Blaenau Ffestiniog 3 miles; Penrhyndeudraeth 4 miles; Porthmadog 7 miles.

Maentwrog is a village and community in the Welsh county of Gwynedd, lying in the Vale of Ffestiniog just below Blaenau Ffestiniog, within the Snowdonia National Park. The River Dwyryd runs alongside the village, on the periphery and adds to the picturesque environment. The village has its own highly regarded traditional inn, the Grapes Hotel, well known for its food and atmosphere and the Oakeley Arms is also nearby. The scenic area around Maentwrog has many public footpaths plus the beauty spot of Plas Tan Y Bwlch and the Ffestiniog Steam Railway are also within a few miles. Nearby Plas Tan y Bwlch, substantially rebuilt during the 19th century by the Oakeley family on the site of a first house probably built in the early 17th century, overlooks the village. Plas Tan y Bwlch has its own halt - Plas Halt - on the Ffestiniog Railway, and nearby Tan-y-Bwlch railway station is the railway's principal intermediate station. Maentwrog means Twrog's stone and according to legend, a giant known as Twrog hurled a boulder from the top of a hill down into the settlement, destroying a pagan altar. This stone is said to be the one located in St Twrog's Church courtyard. It is said that if one rubs this boulder one is fated to return to the village in the future. The village settlement expanded in the 19th century to house workers from local slate mines. Within the village community is the imposing Plas Tan y Bwlch, home of the Snowdonia National Park Study Centre and former residence of the Oakeley family. A superb base from which to discover the Snowdonia National Park and all of North Wales.

Note: The cottage has its own natural water supply from a borehole. This is perfectly safe to drink but some people may prefer to bring their own drinking water. The mobile phone signal is average. The best signal is by the kitchen window.
Note: There is a supplementary charge of £25 per pet, per stay - up to a maximum of 1 pets. Pets are not allowed upstairs or on the soft furnishings. Due to the rural location of the property the owner would like to know the breeds of the dogs staying at the time of booking please.
