  • "We had a lovely stay."

Just right for our size of family (2 adults, 1 very big 13yr old). We hadn't realised the steepness of the streets or that vehicle access is so limited, which while not a problem for us could be for others. Oh and the hairdryer in the larger bedroom is really sticky for some reason. All round though we had a great stay and would happily recommend both Rose Lea Cottage in particular and Sykes Cottages.

  • "A lovely find!"

Rose Lea was so clean and comfortable. Dogs are allowed to stay but we would never have known. Tea, coffee, washing up liquid, handwash etc were provided which was great but also we had been left biscuits! It was interesting to read the history of the cottage in the visitors guidebook. Staithes is an ideal place for walking parts of the Cleveland Way so Rose Lea is ideally situated for this.

  • "Rose Lea is a wonderful little cottage in the heart of Staithes with easy access to shops and restaurants and great for exploring the village."

The cottage itself is welcoming and cosy and is well equipped, including washer drier. The stairs are quite steep so not for those with any mobility issues, and the toilet and shower rooms are separate with the toilet being downstairs. Things to know..yes there is parking but this is at the top of the village and it is metered, and not close to the property. First timers to the village should be aware this is a steep hill to walk up. The information / description about the property differs between agent listings as one said no dogs and parking when in fact yes it can take the family pet dog but parking is restricted to loading and unloading only. We had a wonderful time and would go again!

About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
