Really enjoyed our stay. Went walking and was very close to the coast. Thank you to the owners who gave us a bottle of wine and cake.

  • "We did choose chapel-on-the-hill for its view and the cheerful colours on the first floor."

The view from the first floor was indeed wonderful, but with the overdimensioned very black (uncomfy and not our taste) sofas the living area lost its very unique charme. Had we seen the sofas before, we would have choose different. Apart from that the cottage is very well equipped and the welcome pack was delicious.

Sofas and beds not the most comfortable but more than adequate if you are going to be spending the day out and about.

  • "Had never been to this part of the country before and had the feeling of stepping back in time to when I was a child."

Especially when you could see the steam trains back and to in Grosmont from the beautiful arched chapel windows of the upstairs lounge of the property. Inside the chapel was bang up to date. Well furnished and equipped and tastefully decorated. A great location for trips to the coast or just walking out of the door and exploring the countryside. Walking in this area can be pretty tiring but then you come back and sit on the sofa and watch the sun go down over the hills through those fabulous arched windows.

The accommodation was as we expected it to be, clean, tidy and comfortable. It is a great area to visit especially for those who like walking. It is accommodation we would certainly book again.

Inside everything was really tastefully done, and the owners were friendly and responsive. Ten out of ten!

  • "Lovely place to stay."

Two friends who should have been with us couldn't come so planning to book again for next year. Great walks along the rail trail and higher up the valley as well as the coastal path. Very lucky with the weather - only one damp and misty day. Fabulous autumn colour. Thank you!

  • "Our fourth fantastic stay in these lovely properties (Chapel-on-the-Hill and Sunday Cottage)."

Outstanding as always. A lovely discovery this time was the new 'Albert's Gallery' in the stunning restored Wesleyan Chapel on Church Street, Whitby. We found it too late to book an evening meal but it was great for even just a coffee and fab cheesecake. Also shows old films maybe once a fortnight. The Station Tavern in Grosmont is under new management and was closed for repairs most of the time we were here so not sure how it will have changed. We had a couple of lovely meals in The Postgate in Egton Bridge though and bumped into Andy (the old Station Tavern barman) who now works there. Great days out in Filey, Bridlington, Whitby, Scarborough and Pickering. Also cosy times in this lovely property just cooking, reading, doing jigsaws and chilling out on the rainy days. Thank you!

Say no more! PS A rainy Sunday was made extra special by the cosy and delightful Wit's End Cafe in Sandsend and a pod of dolphins. Look out for them!

  • "Superb conversion of an old chapel, well equipped and very comfortable with great views towards the railway station."

Great Sunday lunch at The Forge at Aislaby (best to book) and also had a very tasty meal at lunchtime in the Mallyan Spout Hotel in Goathland. The Magpie at Whitby was still as good as we remembered for fish and chips, etc. The Station Tavern in Grosmont can also be recommended for bar meals. Loved the walk along the Rail Trail to Goathland and back. The cake and wine were much appreciated. Hope to return in the future!

Love the views from the lounge. Overcast first day which added to the atmosphere of Whitby Abbey and enjoyed Heritage days. Sunny the rest of the week so lots of walks in this beautiful countryside and coast. Excellent food at Station Tavern. Thank you and we look forward to coming again!

  • "Fab house and lovely views from the windows at night."

Places to visit - Robin Hoods Bay is a fabulous little town with a massive hill; Sandsend - excellent beach and pizza restaurant was perfect; Mallyan Spout Waterfall - worth the walk and our 2 and 4 year old children managed. A big hill and rock at the bottom; Falling Foss Waterfall - a beautiful tea room. Take wellies for children; Pickering or Whitby on the steam trains - Pickering Castle was great, huge portions at the Black Swan. Amusements in Whitby good on a rainy afternoon.

  • "Such an amazing place."

We could spend all day looking at the every changing views. The Chapel was so well equipped, we could not want for anything and thanks for the flowers, wine and cakes. Weather was great apart from a rainy morning and decided to rest and do a puzzle. Fantastic puzzle table!! I want one. Will definitely recommend this Chapel and this gorgeous part of Yorkshire.

  • ""Wow!" - our initial reaction as we walked through the door."

Your wonderful conversion of the Chapel more than lived up to the online description; a beautiful place to spend the week. We are actually on a family holiday with the rest of them (6 adults and 6 children) in a big house at the top of the hill. We had several visits from people looking for a bit of peace in our paradise! Looking forward to our next visit to Grosmont and the Chapel. Many thanks for the flowers, wine and cakes - much appreciated.

We've been looking forward to it so much and really enjoyed our time at Chapel-on-the-Hill again. Dry days allowed us to get out and about, on the NYMR to Pickering this time, back to Staithes. About the location

GROSMONT

Whitby 5 miles.

The pretty village of Grosmont sits at the junction of the River Esk and Murk Esk in the midst of striking North Yorkshire Moors scenery. The area is characterised by its narrow roads, steep hills and scenic views over valleys of patchwork fields and wide-open expanses of moorland. Grosmont itself lies in the ‘Heartbeat Country’ and is famous for being the home of the North York Moors Steam Railway. The Railway has been preserved and run by enthusiasts since 1973 and today carries upwards of 300,000 passengers a year. The village has a general store, post office, book shop, art gallery, cafes and a pub. It makes a great base for exploring the many pretty farming villages along the Esk Valley and the wider North York Moors National Park, as well as the North Yorkshire Coastline with characterful harbour towns and villages.
